Gearbox oil

Recently gearbox had become notchy, last week i could no longer select fourth without double clutching and crunching.
Reverse also began to crunch, fearing the worst, synchros etc i thought maybe change the gear oil may help! I dropped the oil which was black and only 800ml of it yikes 2ltr of 75/80 and problem cured which really suprised me but very happy big_smile

The oil was changed by myself 30k ago, and the box does leak ever so slightly but i didn't expect that much loss in two years. Any ideas as why the oil is black guys?

Re: Gearbox oil

Don't get me wrong it still feels like a 200k box so no fast changes but perfectly usable again, Probably worth changing oil then on yours then eh really easy on these old vans,

my conclusion on my oil been black is overheating due too not enough of it maybe

Aye. ill order oil on payday as i am selling the van come the end of February so dont want potential buyers thinking they need a new box. Is the drain hole an obvious square hole like most cars what a socket ratchet fits into?

Re: Gearbox oil

I had a very faint whine on the 306 when in 3rd and was getting very notch y.......When checked I was lucky if there was a coffee mug's worth of oil in there....... Thinking I was on the hunt for a gearbox I  filled up with 2 ltrs  of 75/80 and put in some molyslip in the hope of giving me a little more breathing space .......... 50,000mls and  4 Spanish trips later the box is still working fine and it too has over 200,000 mls on it...... (Molyslip make the gearbox oil look filthy)

There seems to be two types a 250ml bottle (Molyslip 2001G Gear Oil Supplement) and what I used which is the 65ml tube of  grease..... seems to have worked OK for me.....really should put some in van also !

Re: Gearbox oil

Thanks for that, I'm hoping to nurse this old gal through at least another 100k after having replaced most of the running gear and suspension components

Re: Gearbox oil

Whilst your here do you have experience of any negatives of adding a little 2/ oil to the diesel.

I used to add 2 stroke oil to diesel tank back when low sulphur city diesel first came out and all the scare stories about pump damage due to lack of lubrication from the city diesel......
Haven't used 2stroke oil for long time...... Never had any probs don't think it did any harm.... but it was only about half bottle to full tank ...... If anything I thought engine seemed a little smother

I thought our 306 was a smoother when I used (Rapeseed oil) cooking oil and topped off about half the tank with diesel (306 has Bosch pump our van  has Lucas pump)

Re: Gearbox oil

I was also told the 2T helps prevent/reduce smoke on startup. Doubt i would use red 2T though if they still produce it just in case i get my tank dipped at the side of the road  big_smile
