MOT time

Well I put the old girl in for her MOT last week, the fail list wasn't too bad;
Loose battery, upon investigation it was the tray loose, so I tightened that up.
Exhaust middle box, replaced that (despite wiggling it around it still doesn't quite line up in the heat proof shroud)
Two patches of welding behind the rear wheels in front of the rear crossmember, ground out the rot and welded some pieces in.
Fingers crossed when I resubmit it on Tues!

I've had nearly 12 months trouble free motoring from it (replaced the battery, that's all), and look forward to the next 12 months!

Re: MOT time

I got a big tin of Carplan's version of waxoil and did my van the other day. Doubt you will need a tin that size. I did my Convoy and had some left over.

Re: MOT time

Definitely a good idea.
Is it worth power washing underneath ?
Or should I just scrape the crud off then waxoyl it?

I just used a wire brush on mine to get rid of the lose surface rust and and road crud. You could power wash but i would recommend leaving to dry properly before using waxoyl.

Re: MOT time

Could I spray used engine oil inside the chassis or is that frowned upon these days??

MOT Station I tend to use swears by used engine oil ( but just not the day or hours before the test ) smile

Shouldn't think it'll be any worse than Waxoil come time if a hot poker is needed.......

Come to think of it black waxoil and mix of old engine oil has kept an acquaintances 1988 Fiat Uno on the go

Re: MOT time

Fiat Uno. Not seen one of those on the road for years. I had a Strada for a week what did not mix well with the back of an Escort.

Re: MOT time

Got my own MOT'ed last week with no problems.

I was surprised as I had done nothing about a couple of advisories from the last one.  I assumed that these advisories went on record to be found when the next test was done.  Is this not so?

One of the advisories related to all seat rails being worn.  Could have been a nightmare to try to fix and almost impossible to find replacements.  Finding and  replacing four seats which fold down to two single beds would have been very expensive even if I could find some.

Good luck with yours Ricko, they seem to come round faster each year.

Re: MOT time

Yay, passed today!
Did the welding last Saturday.
A couple of advisories; cv boot, pinprick hole just by cat
Will under seal the welding tomorrow and refit the vent box underneath.
A mate has offered me a couple of hours on his ramp on Sat afternoon, so a waxoyling we will go!
12 months happy motoring ahead!!

I agree... but advisories are just that and if they haven't deteriorated  in the mean time then there not a fail but an advisory...

However being human

1. may not pick up on it this time and

2. it seems to me that it's also a matter of opinion by the tester of the interpretation of the rules where that demarcation line is between "advisory or not" and "advisory or fail"  and most will Err on the side of caution for obvious reasons

Much like
I always hated when my Tractor Unit or fridge trailer had a niggly little problem that nobody could quite put their finger on and I would hear that famous phrase "Let it develop" ..... I can guarantee that it bit me in the Ar** But if it was Fubbard .... no choice..... clear cut..... it needed fixed

But to be honest advisories having been brought to our attention do need to be monitored and addressed accordingly

In general, yes I would certainly pay attention and check them out.  In fact I did get the bit of welding done that was an advisory last time.  Another bit of welding I was advised about couldn't be found!

I do see the MOT as the minimal standard a vehicle should be able to achieve.  Mind you, I don't need the state to remind me and extract money for it every year.

But with my seat rails, I don't consider them a significant danger even though I can see why a tester might be concerned.  While not averse to sensible precautions, as someone from the era of no compulsory helmets or seat belts, I think there are far worse dangers on the roads than rattley seat rails.

Just remembered my 40's swb landy with a V8 in it.  On the road in the late 70's.  Seats were bushel apple boxes wired through holes in the floor, no screen and no rear bodywork.

Ah well, no time for fun or excitement anymore... efficiency and safety uber alles.   smile
