My van hasn't started to intermittently run very rough today.
It's a 1.9 and it's pouring out loads of white smoke feels down on power and knocks at low revs.
Any suggestions, Just bought the damn thing I'm gutted

White smoke has two common causes unburnt diesel (timing out , dodgy glowplug if just on start up)) also steam ,caused by water getting in the cylinders(head gasket or crack in cyliderhead or block,, hope this helps
if it dosent smell like steam and just diesel get the belt done and timing checked

So with that in mind I wanna keep my eye on the coolant level? I've been told it could be injector seal leak

I've been advised it's probs not the head gasket as it's intermittent, that sound right?

Bit shit luck though. You can get a tester to see if any engine fumes/diesel or oil is in the coolant. Dont ask what its called as i dont know. Also keep an eye on the oil as it will start to look like dark cream if water is getting into it. If all this is OK i doubt its the head also but if you cant pinpoint it then no mater what you change will be chucking money away unnecessarily.

What does the white smoke smell of ? that is the big clue, leaking seal? could be as losing compression and not burning the diesel in one of the cylinders,, have a look around the injectors for signs of leakage (easy fix if you get the injector out)

Whats the valve/sensor called up near the airbox? Think its on the airbox to engine side. Someone a while ago was having bother and cleaned or replaced this and all seemed fine in the world again.

It's sort blue white kinda smells like diesel to me! How do I tell there are signs of leakage? And then what to do if there is a leakage? I don't know diesels well sadly.
Done 100 miles without it happening and then it just came out of the blue again, engine management light was on for a bit too

It could be an air leak in the fuel system this causes a lot of smoke and power loss, try priming the pump with the plunger on the fuel filter if it's soft when you first press it then it has air in the system
Be kind to strangers, you may become one some day

Worth opening the valve at the bottom and draining it first to eliminate any water in the fuel. Common problem on diesels if they dont get used a great deal.
