Dehumidifier

Bought this from Amazon the other week, £20. 12V. Seems to be working quite well...

Re: Dehumidifier

Not bad if you can stand it running when trying to kip. If i did my sums right that should last 15 hours on a 110ah battery.

Re: Dehumidifier

Might invest in one of those myself ...... All our vehicle are bad this time of year with condensation .... getting soaked in rain and wet jackets etc in car  or the van, having gas cooker on (not that we've been anywhere really lately)  obviously helps ....... Not

Re: Dehumidifier

Says 3A on the back. Is that its actual draw? If so that's pretty hefty.

Re: Dehumidifier

Only 36 watts, hardly any draw at all.

Re: Dehumidifier

I'll try and get an ammeter on it at some point or, at least, a power meter on the mains adaptor (which would provide the worse case draw)

I'm thinking in terms of powering it off-grid. 30Ah in a day is probably 2+ hours of driving/lots of solar in winter.

Re: Dehumidifier

The significant factor is not how much it collects, but how much it reduces the moisture levels in the air.  Which in any practical camping situation is I suspect as near to zero as not to matter.

Might eventually have an impact in a totally sealed environment but a sealed environment is not practical in a van with wet gear inside, cooking and breathing.

The science is way over my head but basically if you remove water vapour from the air it will just take up more from any liquid source available.  Until it has exhausted all the water available in the space it will maintain the same moisture level in the air.

If you are allowing enough ventilation to keep the condensation levels down in the first place, you are constantly topping up the inside moisture level from the outside.

A dehumidifier might help to dry out a damp van if left sealed and not used.  But usualy just as easy to give it a good run with full heat and ventilation.

I just tried to read about dew points again.  It makes my brain hurt!
