I've got a 2014 Dispatch 1.6 H1L1 and I find the engine pretty responsive across the range even fully loaded. It's much better even than my Golf 1.6TDI which is less flexible and requires constant gear changing to get the power when you need it.  As for the Dispatch's fuel consumption, I've been ploughing the M6 for the last year where I keep the speed between 60-65 and, yes, I have touched 50 mpg but about 47 is more usual.  However, throw on a roof rack with the wind in your face and tyres below the max recommended pressure and your down to about 40 mpg.  The only thing it lacks is a driver's armrest.
