#26 Re: Maintenance » Help... wiring issue » 2021-05-30 09:37:44

If you actually need the wiring loom to the lights then that goes under the vehicle and pops up through a connector in the rear left pillar (nearside rear if UK) - from memory there are 13 wires in that loom. I've posted the codes for the wires (your actual colours may vary) elsewhere recently - I'll just go find them

#27 Re: General Discussion » Expert e-hydrogen » 2021-05-30 09:35:23

I have often said that one way to speed up the take-up of electric vehicles would be to have a standardised size of fuel cells/batteries. They then get treated like Calor gas bottles - you buy the first one and then exchange for full (with the price of the fuel only) whenever you need a fill up. Just drive to a filling station, pull out your empty fuel cell, swap it for a full one, pay and drive off. The station then fills up the old one (with charge or hydrogen, whatever) and puts it back on the shelf.

Charge time is one of the biggest drags on uptake - if you're driving a distance then you don't want to park up for 30-120 minutes each time you need to recharge...

My Sticker is wherever my wife "Tidied it up to" after I left it out for too long whilst waiting for a clean van and a dry day :-(

Yeah, I think this belt needed replacing...

Oh, don't worry - I'm a belt and braces guy - I'll be marking the two top pulleys and the fly wheel as well as trying to lock them!

Right, so, just in case anyone stumbles across this thread whilst doing their own Cam Belt change, here's how I managed to remove the rear-top cover without resorting to a mechanic:

I looked at the engine's nearside flexible mounting and decided that it had a reasonable amount of 'give' in it - i.e. dropping the engine by a few inches on the offside would not result in too much strain on the nearside joint, so I placed a second jack under the sump (with the sump still protected by a  piece of wood) but about an inch lower than the other jack. I then released the tension on the primary jack until the sump dropped to the level of the secondary jack. I did it in this fashion because I don't trust the speed of 'drop' when releasing the valve on hydraulic jacks. I then tried the cover again  and realised that more 'drop' was needed. So i rpeated the process in a couple of incremental steps until the cover was able to be extracted. I then raised the engine up until it was level again.

I'd still be interested to know how proper mechanics do this and if there is a simple knack that I'm missing...

#33 Re: Maintenance » Engine type, Cam Belts and Torques » 2021-05-15 09:13:05

Ah don't worry - I've got thick skin!

I've changed cam belts before but only a smaller FIRE engine (in a Punto) - also had the cylinder head off and skimmed and replaced on that. And replaced an engine in and old Escort Mk2 - but all of those had a Haynes with me to get the torques and the knacks - there's not much actually written down for these beasts that I can find!

#34 Re: Maintenance » Engine type, Cam Belts and Torques » 2021-05-15 07:14:20

This cover (I've moved the pipes above it a little out of the way and it is fully unbolted)

#35 Re: Maintenance » Engine type, Cam Belts and Torques » 2021-05-15 07:10:50

Urgh, I was really hoping not to have to remove more components than I had to!

Also, is there a knack to getting the plastic top cover (rear section) fully away from the belt - it seems to wedge on the top of the engine compartment and I don't want to drop the engine too much on it remaining mounts jut to give it clerance

#36 Re: Maintenance » Engine type, Cam Belts and Torques » 2021-05-14 19:10:55

Flywheel Access?

Would it be through this cover (forgive the oily sump - that needs looking at!) And is it just three bolts/fasteners shown?

#37 Re: Maintenance » Engine type, Cam Belts and Torques » 2021-05-14 18:01:56

So the van is now up on stands ready for a bit of finagling.

Everything says to lock the flywheel (along with the other pulleys that need locking)

What's the easiest way to get access to the flywheel to lock it? Bear in mind that I'm reasonably practical but not an expert mechanic...

This is what I've found in my Peter Russek book - is wasn't very helpful for me because I couldn't see the plate, even though I new where I was looking!

DW10 Plate

The https://dispatchexpertscudo.org.uk/dw10.html link on the menu bar up there ^ also has some details about where the plate can be found and might be a bit more clearer or accurate!

OK, I REALLY need to change the Cambelt on my van.

When I bought it, it came with a Gate kit - so I guess it's the right one but I'd like to make sure.

Anyone able to recognise this engine type? I think it's a non-turbo 1.9D but what model? 1998 van...

As well as ensuring I have the right belt, I'd really love to know what the torques are for all the bolts and fittings (tensioner, water pump, etc - and engine mountings).

Speaking of engine mountings, which of these 7+ fasteners would I have to undo (or is it all of them) to complete the cambelt change...?

So the van has been SORN for quite a while but kids are moving flats soon so it was time to get it back on the road.

First bit of fun was when I attempted to start it this morning (it was running fine yesterday) - click, nowt. click, nowt. click nowt.

Some percussive maintenance on the starter motor sorted that.

Then, the garage ring up. Exhaust leak failure. More specifically the EG tube had come away from the housing on the exhaust manifold. The bolts were sheared and stuck inthe housing. This was eventually fixed, however it was close to having the entire manifold removed and that could have sheared the bolts in to the head...

But anyway, fresh new MoT and the DVLA has 6 months of Vehicle Excise out of me...

The colours don't mean anything.
If you can read the numbers printed on them then I may be able to find out if we know the engine also.

OK, it's been a while, but I've found the Wire Codes

PB1
PA4

into connector M702

This is a 1998 van.

Whilst considering places to put som eUSB poer sockets I prised the trim off, just to the lower right of the steering wheel.

To my surprise it housed a connector block and cable to the wiring harness.

Any clues as to what this is? I've looked in the manual but cannot see any 'optional' switches, lights or controls that are referenced in this location...

Has anyone any advice about how to adjust these compensators? I'm just taking the leaky air suspension off SteVan and replacing with springs. I suspect that the ride height will be a lot taller so may need to adjust this
