I had a cone [at one point] that you made slippy ... It went over CV joint  and it stretched the inside out  boot over joint..............
Try a universal boot they are usually on the larger size and then cut to size required on joint before securing down...............

#52 Re: Maintenance » Brake imbalance (FIAT Scudo 2004 2.0 JTD SX). » 2021-12-14 03:55:45

I too have had a sticky caliper on van that needed some lube ............
However a couple years ago now ... I fitted along with discs and pads a new caliper
I tend now to file the mount parts of new pads to smooth them off a bit and also makes them slightly smaller along with some copperslip before fitting ..............

I did this once to the rear brakes on a Vectra I had at time and was informed that there was something seriously wrong with my car because of the noise it made .............
I hadn't refitted the Anti Rattle Shims and this was the noise that was heard while moving...........
My thoughts on discovery of this ... If their rattling their not seized..............

#53 Re: General Discussion » Oil Leak - Is there a common place? » 2021-12-14 03:30:10

I have a 2005 dispatch and have had a small oil leak from the rocker cover on and off for quite some time ................
It's been a real PITA ...............
I first noticed quite some time ago and have been told it's to do with it being a plastic rocker cover and warping with heat cycles and a common trait [I've barely got more than 100,000mls on it]..............
Iv'e had it sealed up numerous times but was leaking quite badly after a clutch change 3 or 4 years ago for some reason ...........
It seams to me time and slight disturbance being the culprit.............
It would not surprise me if mine is weeping again after doing glow plugs last year and the Silicone RTV breaking down ................
It seems to cover the rear of the engine in it's entirety then occasionally leaving oil behind ... A small amount of spilled oil makes a lot of mess and travels a long way...........

Its Probably not what your looking for but I dear say it's somewhere to start looking ..........

It baffled us for what seemed ages ..............

I'd measure same height from floor as Casper says ................

#59 Re: General Discussion » Final Score: 203493 - Dead Van for Sale! » 2021-12-04 03:33:47

This saddens me..............

Have you actually inspected the foibles of your van or just taken the word of the garage ......................
What I have found in the years of being in this part of D&G...............
That and this is not confined to  just CD that some garages depending on age of vehicle and mileage will assume that if they condemn it bad enough you'll go away...................
[To some old vehicle means No Money]............

I've had this both now with my van as its now 16 yrs old and ageing but especially the 306 when the car wash at tesco tried to rip the rear hatch off it and tesco wanted quotes ... Most garages totally dismissed it because it was about 18 years at time with a bit of mileage, after some slight repairs [biggest issue was finding parts for that age of car and vans getting there]... 306 is now 21 years with 212,000mls and climbing slowly as it's sort of retired.........................

I'm Not saying it doesnt need some work ....................
It might not be as bad as you think if you use second hand parts out breakers.....................

Thats where I had to find tail lights for the 306 .............
It's easier to price for new parts! ...............

#60 Re: General Discussion » Hey All… » 2021-11-30 09:48:02

The speedo on my van is intermittent and works when it feels like it...............
I'm informed that after changing another set of clocks and giving away what turned out to be a working set of clocks, The likely cause is the gearbox pick up sensor is most likely faulty............
I've had 3 MOTs now showing no mileage I haven't bothered to correct mileage if it's not showing when it needs to or look at gearbox speed sensor...................

To remove heater slide............. you have to remove the knobs obviously  ..... Theres screws hidden by the lid of ashtray and gear leaver gaitor IIRC

P.S. the speedo and other gauges are garbage I'm told ... Also told replace with a good working set [when you can find them] rather than that near impossible repair ...............

And Welcome aboard ...........................................

Before I forget ....................

#61 Re: Maintenance » Gearbox Leak - 1100 Miles From Home » 2021-11-26 09:03:08

Casper makes a good point there  most FWD gearboxes fill to about driveshaft level on diff .............

I did some googling for G/box without a level plug and came up with ...

Inside LH wheel arch there is a level plug on the gearbox end casing.
The plug is noticably different from the other bolts found here and its got a seal washer under the head.
Wipe clean the area, unscrew the plug and notice eaxcvtly WHEN the oil starts dripping out when filling.
At the onset of dripping oil level is exactly correct.

This relates to a Xantia your van IIRC should have a ML5C fitted not sure what end of box looks like behind N/S wheel as mine has a Be4r box fitted [Has a DW8 in it]... The principle should be the same ...............

Also IIRC a similar question answered here it may be worth a look ...............

Only taking on the prognosis and not looking at the car I actually bought discs and pads many moons ago for my then missus car. As It was thought the grinding noise was brake pads down to metal on her car it turned out to be a piece of gravel off the drive had found its way into and lodged in the disc area. Needless to say the discs and pads went on the shelf for the next year or so as there was plenty meat on her brakes ..................

#66 Re: General Discussion » Greater Manchester » 2021-11-23 13:10:41

It's the old adage of how can I fleece you ? I know, if you can't afford a new vehicle and are probably greener by keeping an older vehicle running and not wasting resources [i.e. energy to produce and materials for the troublesome new one] We'll charge you a daily fine you can't afford either and you'll nerver own a new vehicle but the one you have will no longer polute and we'll rake it in ... It's all a SCAM!! It doesn't matter what colour of rosette they wear or wheather you have the money or not it's a win win for the government you either pay the daily fine or they get the tax off you via the new vehicle ....and it will never stop just keep on evolving......Politicians are an absolute disaster ! Unless it makes them look good or can be done in their term usually 5 years their not interested.....................

Talk of the devil ... Things have already started to change....................

So much so that Austria has gone into full lockdown again and the Cech republic are putting restrictions in place andcocidering following suit............
Apparently Germany and Austria have had a low uptake in having jabs done and this is what's getting the blame of the surge of infection rates. ...............

I also saw on euro news channel that they have been having festival parades in Spain without restriction this claimed a bit like the UK that things are more stable and number are controled better because of jsbs and the booster up take numbers ........................

To right he is doing OK. I took my Convoy down south in the summer. 500 mile round trip and averaged 22MPG  yikes Gutted as the last bus was 35MPH but 700kg lighter. Cant see that making such a difference.

Few weekends i took it up Applecross and the likes and still averaged 22. Im thinking the air/egr are all coked up and i good scrub out is on order. At £1.51 lt i want more miles for my bucks.

Those figures of yours reminds me of why I bought my van amoung other reasons and it also brings things into perspective .............
Obviously to buy it's cheaper than a VW and as we had the DW8 in the 306 I figured reasonable MPG............
I must admit to being a little disapointed at the MPG results [I put that down to in the end the gearing, over all weight and it being brick shaped ] as the 306 has never given me less than 43 MPG and normally higher than that.............
On a run at roughly 60 to 70MPH it's around 49-50 MPG the best I ever got with it was 57 MPG and I wasn't even trying at the time and shocked me .................

But as I said to my Partner it's all relative at the time of searching out a van as we both fancied although a good bit older for roughly the same money as van [Our budget roughly] a converted coach .........................
As I then said to her apart from needing an hgv to drive it [and well in my 60's now, Medicals coming round are getting dubious] at 15 to 18 MPG and usage every 6 weeks or so, At the very least we'll have no money left to go any where at holiday time................

I based my figures on things like [Very scientific method] I at one time had a 16 ton gross Ford Cargo with the Perkins V8 in it and fully freighted it did about 15-17 MPG and averaged over all about 20 MPG in the time we had it....................
My first lorry an 1988 earlyish EPS Mercedes 1635  artic 350hp non intercooled twin turbo with a converted ZF to become the 16 speed EPS box which made life in usage a little easier I guess but over all a real PITA, Hense why I said it was built on friday 13th at 5 to 5pm, I did manage about 500,000kms in 4 years with it [And costly to repair, But every thing on a Merc is expensive] ... When empty it did about 7-8 MPG and fully freighted was 6.5MPG in those days I could burn close to £4000 in diesel on a good month and I spent £1705 for 6 months road tax [The dearest then available later I was able to restrict a couple of units to weight spread over 6 axles and keep road tax to under £700 a year], Changed days now but I'm still fuel cost conscious though, Later on the very best I got was from my and back to a 4x2 at this point,A Scania 164 530hp single turbo intercooled V8 with 10 speed box[All the Scania's I drove had ten speed boxes, In the mid to late 80's I had a 92 then a 93 wendy house Scania they were split 6 range change 4 to get the 10] and it [164 =16ltr  & 4 series] was up to 11MPG at 38 tons gross it was usually about 9MPG for it normally.....................
Now a days I'm told Artics are mostly Automatics and return as good if not better MPG than a Manual equivalent.................
Although I've used a couple Automatics, Back in the day they were not efficient and quite fragile ................

#69 Re: General Discussion » I did a 600 mile run at 55mph to see what MPG I could get » 2021-11-18 04:26:31

Kenbw2~~ Did you have any of that PCR Lateral Flow stuff to contend with on leaving or re-entering the country or did you show the NHS international travel thing.................
I ask as we are planning a trip down to see her Dad hopefully and we've been told we can get extra repeat prescription if our stay over there lasts or takes us over a month ...................

But the way things are going plus commitments and at this time of year it most likely will be Jan or Feb before we get to make a move and I dear say things could easily change by then ...................
Only hope prices stabilize a bit..........
I dout it ...  Travel cost and fuel are rising high everything is and I also dout they will return either  close to pre-covid levels  as they never do...............

BTW I usually with my DW8 get 38-39 mpg and just shy of 41-42 mpg on a decent run at about 60mph.............

I'd say your doing ok there ..................

#70 Re: General Discussion » Radio Code » 2021-11-18 03:36:12

I discovered that if your Clarion radio had a barcode sticker, there was a number on it you could use and you could generate a code ..............
But if it didn't you were snookered ..............
Our local Scrapie could usually decode radios for a fee ... Otherwise ...............
There is more than one version [age probably] of the type of Clarion fitted to the mk1 van, although they look the same.............

My 306, saxo, IIRC The 106 company car I used and 206. every thing PSA in that ERA probably optioned them ................
It's been a while since I've had an issue plus I've writen down codes on post it notes for them and got rid of a couple that were rendered usless .................

Many many moons ago I added some stop leak additive to the oil in the diff off my Lada .................
At first I thought it didn't work ... As the back of car still got oily spotty bits...............
Then the first time I drove it up the motorway to Scotland  from aylesford [kent where I was working] it sealed it's self up...........
No more spotty marks on back after I'd washed car since that trip.............
[It couldn't have been getting hot enough ... long enough]...................

I still have that Lada and still oily spotty clear and it's got to be 20 years since I added that stuff...............

I have to admit it hasn't been used in anger to chase a rally in D&G for about 7 or 8 years ................

I tend to use USB charging for an increasing number of devices these days and have recently bought a new torch with a 21700 battery to add to the list.

It does have integrated USB C charging but I would also like to have an external charger to have one in use and a spare on charge.  My current (no pun) charger has never been very good anyway and won't take these batteries either so looking for a replacement.

I have had a look at a few reviews and forums but have been overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of conflicting advice and (for me) over technical information offered.  I didn't expect the depths of geekery and enthusiasm for torches I have fallen into.  Often from US gun nut's and preppers too which I struggle to maintain enough interest in to watch or read.  I need something to see by, not to kill grizzly bears with.

What I would like is a USB-C charger that will do AA, AAA, and 21700's both NIMH and LI-ION.  Protection of cells more important than speed and 2 cell would be adequate.  And of course I want it as cheap as possible without sacrificing too much quality.

USB connection most important as I need to charge from solar more often than mains.   I suspect it won't be long before type C takes over from mini USB altogether so I think that's the one to go with.

Does such a thing exist?

My head is spinning.

Don't know if this is of any use it's a smart charger I tend to use an XTAR VC4 USB charger either on my PC or a 3pin usb 5V output plug...I never use more than 5V with it and seems to do OK and takes many types of battery 1.5V and the 3 .7V ..... Lion & Nimh types
