All the stuff I've found suggests that there is an automatic tensioner on most/all of the diesel engines in these - I'm not sure that I have the original engine (the plate has been removed or corroded off).
But anyway, here's the set up on my van:
None of these idelers have any movement in them.
The belt I got to replace is 40mm longer than the current belt.
https://dispatchexpertscudo.org.uk/foru … php?id=651 has a diagram of the belt routing and it looks like my (1) and (2) are the same size, but swapped round. And where my (1) is should be the tensioner.
I have refitted the old belt (but it needs replacing) but cannot easily source the same length for my 'setup'
Lots of things on this engine make me suspect it's been finagled with in the past (the waterpump was different, which meant they'd hacksawed a bit off the top-back timing belt cover - more on that in another post).
Thoughts/suggestions? (I had considered using a larger idler (taken from the timing belt replacement) in place of 1 or 3).
Is there much movement in the alternator to take up 40mm of slack (I guess 20mm of movement for 'there and 'back')?

Looking at the image, I wonder if slackening of the nut between 1 and 2 will allow the 2 idler to move and take up slack...

Yeah, there's nothing obvious like that on mine - Eurocarparts gives a ball-park figure of £120 for something similar - I'll try the local scrappy first!

Sorry ..... For whatever reason I've arrived late ......
I do believe some DW8's had manual belt adjustesrs fitted ... Which would make it your N.O.2 in picture ......
Just like you've now found out from a post on the Berlingo forum from our very own kenbw2 ...................
Mine must have the auto tension on it as I bought IIRC a 6pk1440 and it lay in back of van for ages............
which then had to get fitted about 2 years ago ... when coming across Ranoch moor the belt fitted let go and then we hobbled into the green welly .......

@KenBW2 - on that Berlingo forum you put "Oh and yea, looks like my old belt was too long at 1438mm. The new 1390mm one leaves plenty of room between the pullleys." Which is exactly the same problem I have - I'm glad you've point me to a shorter belt that will fit as I don't fancy making the adjustment to the level where the two tensioner/idlers are almost touching!
Related - does anyone want a belt that is 40mm too long for me to use? :-)

Yes! I remember thinking my pulleys were awfully close to each other. I like to add my findings for future people, glad to see it helped!

11 quid Dayco belt turned up from eBay (Evans halshaw stock label)
All fitted in about an hour (including wheeling tools out, jacking up the van, wheel removal, etc - and reverse when fitted)

It came to mind that years ago "I can't remember issue" that I had to change the auto tensioner on the 306 [it's got A/C...doesn't work] just days before a trip to Spain as it turned out......
I first changed the piece that tensions the drive belt as it appeared at a wonky angle as if its pivot bearing was giving out also it has a 1/2 inch square slot in it for belt fitting [Ltd space to access though]........
I then and I don't remember why changed the tension spring which IIRC fits behind alternator bracket and looks nothing like Scotch joe's picture [It' more like the pulley that fell of my MK4 Golf]..........
Even after all that I on checking found out that Constant revs/running belt was fine for miles and miles but stop start work through cities and towns [in France mostly] would warrant the belt checking constantly as it would start to walk it's way off.......
Then one day about a week after return it was fine and has never given a problem in last 5 or 6 years......
For some reason as always wrong belt [Too short] I was issued same happens with rear brake cylinders [Always wrong fittment and then usually get told it must have had a disc brake conversion when were still on drums]............
It's comes up as a 306 S on parts suppliers PC which I've never heard of when it's a LX ...........
[As you may have guessed only the odd part are an issue]
It is registed in coventry and was a [one of their own fleet] old PSA car origonally........
If that makes a difference [Reg docky says it's a LX also] ...............
Still this is all academic now if your sorted .............
