High revs in 5th gear

Hello can any drivers out there of a 1.6 diesel despatch tell me what their rev counters are saying at 75-80mph?
Mine is 3.4-3.7 and I feel this is too high. Van sounds like its straining.
Gears also may be slipping on 5th, but intermittent. If not that, then why high revs?
Has engine had it? 63 plate 2013 just bought second hand with 50k on clock

Re: High revs in 5th gear

For your small 1.6D engine that sounds about right to me. My 2.4 2260kg van is just under 4k at 75. How heavy is your van 1000kg - 1200kg? I think your worrying about nothing.

Re: High revs in 5th gear

Being that your van is a 1.6 HDI and that you've said it's a 63 plate ........were talking second generation van,.......... couple things........

I'm in agreement with Casper here.
My MK1 van (non turbo DW8) shares an almost identical engine to that in my partners 306 and although I have no rev counter the van feels/sounds as though it's reving a good 500 to 1000 rpm more than the 306 for a given speed.
The gearing will be dictated by the expected weight the van is likely to be grossing more than the car installed equivilant engine will be expected to gross and that the van will be loaded a far greater percentage of the time also......

If your statement of " Van sounds like its straining." due to speed .............OK Maybe need to accept lower cruising altitude

If sounding/feeling strained to achieve and maintain a given speed/revs...... on level ....................
Check the DPF's(FAP) not choked or being very restrictive...........

It's like I saw on the Berlingo forum with regard to the DW8. You just learn to live life a bit more slowly.

Re: High revs in 5th gear

Thanks to all who responded. I will check, as it gives me some confidence. However it would have been interesting to see what a similar van does either in the Despatch, Peugeot or the Fiat Scudo with the same engine size, just to be sure.

Just worried the vehicle is shagged, as its burning through a lot of derv  sad

Re: High revs in 5th gear

I have a 2011 1.6 and mine sits at around 3.5 so I would say its normal

What you have to take into account is its max speed is 90mph so driving at 80 you close to its top end I'm sure most cars sound straining when they are close to max speed
