Tyre pressures

I may be in the minority here with the van fitted with Alloy rims, Ive recently had two front tyres fitted and after van stood for about six weeks doing nothing and before setting of for a couple nights away checked tyre pressures and fronts were 33psi and rears not much better which I thought was to low..... So checked handbook and my van is meant to be on 14" rims but fitted with 15" but tyre size does not match that in handbook for 15" fitted to a HDI.........

So tyres are now at 36/40psi ....Sort of in the middle of whats listed for loaded van.....

Any thoughts ??

Re: Tyre pressures

I often worry myself about tyre pressures.

I have 16 inch alfa Romeo alloys,

I run around 35psi all round, although I do have some weight in the back with the camper conversion.

So you run 40 In the rear?

Does it affect ride comfort at all?

Re: Tyre pressures

Since posting this a couple of things have changed.........

I'd had a raid on my ever decreasing stash and found as suspected two tyres (205/60/15) now on the rear of van(fronts 195/65/15) as I noted last summer on a pre trip once over that tyres on rear were showing some disconcerting cracks in what was still a healthy tread............ this coincided with a impending MOT  about six or eight weeks later.................
I since also fitted a cheap chinnese tyre presure monitor and although Tesco/Morrisons pump is set for 40psi .... I inveriable get 39 or 41psi showing up and after a few miles or so it increases to 42 ish..... (van mostly stood about since MOT last August managing only about 2,000mls since)
I'm now on the look out for front tyres before any great distance jollies this year so most likely fit 4 tyres in all...............playing with tyre size calculator at Mo........

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But in answer to your question at 40 psi  van feels more planted (less squirmy) for every day sort of usage............. comfort feels fine...............
But when fully packed up for two week plus trip to partners fathers place in Spain on border with Portugal I tend to bump another 2....3 psi in for extra weight on board (reduce a little bit tyre bulge) Hence why looking at Commercial tyres (in prefrence to MPV type fitted)............

Having 16" rims will reduce sidewall height and possibly cause some harshnes when highly inflated........(had 17" rims on a MK4 golf..... looked great......... dreadfull for speed humps etc) ..........The Alfa rims don't half look good on van(really suits colour combo and shine that mine is missing...... I'll blame TFR).............As an aging lorry driver/owner I'm not that happy with the effects of under inflated tyres on (laiden) vehicles................

Re: Tyre pressures

Thanks for your swift response

I imagine as a lorry driver you've seen your fair share of blow outs!

I'll have an experiment with pressures and see how I go.

Tyre pressure monitor sounds like a great idea!

40 all round seem sensible?

Hi out of interest what tyres are you running on your 16inch Alfa alloys I’ve just got a pair of 16s myself and need to decide on a tyre. Was thinking a 94xl seeing as I have a 900 with a 2330 gross weight?

Re: Tyre pressures

Hello,

Afraid I've not been that clever. I am using Uniroyal rainsport 3s with no problems. I'd have to check but think they were probably 91s.

I think the Alfa wheels are great, but if your worried about weight not sure of their limitations also.

Saying that no problems what so ever

Sorry that's not much help!

Re: Tyre pressures

Thanks, I don’t intend to log that much weight around at all expect yours may be taking more weight than mine. Love the colour!

91 on a Tyre weight rating = 615kg per tyre X 4 = 2460Kg Gross ............ A little tight but should be ok  on van with 2330Kg Gross
However AXLE Weight obviously is 1230Kg weight evenly distubuted but as per norm the rear will carry more and is (Don't know what it is) probibly rated higher than the front axle
Hence why I Say 91's are a little tight (Just watch how loaded and heavy rear axle is plus sustained speeds) .............. 94xl's are probibly the better less worry option .................... Or if optional fit C rated 105's ....................................

But thats is one thing we all tend to forget .................... most likely the (Alloy) rim will have a load rating also ......... Which will be a whole other debate..................
