Mobile phone charging on the road

Hi, I've been charging my phone from a USB socket on my stereo, it doesn't seen very efficient though, taking ages to charge up. Has anyone fitted a USB port to their dashboard? Or am I better using one that goes into the cig lighter? I've just used a cig lighter one in another vehicle and it seemed to charge quicker.
Your thoughts and opinions are most welcome.
Cheers

Re: Mobile phone charging on the road

Yea the stereo ones charge at a pitiful rate, cig lighter ones are good, I use these which charge quite quickly

This looks the same but with faster delivery: https://www.amazon.co.uk//dp/B06XSCCLCD

Re: Mobile phone charging on the road

You might have a lighter socket to usb converter that is lower power rated?

I use a lighter extension lead that has a hub with two cigar and three usb outlets.  I can use it in front from the dash cigar lighter or in the back, plugged into a cigar lighter socket connected to the leisure battery.

Two of the usb outlets are something around 1 amp and one is 2 amp.  So obviously I use the higher one if I am just charging one device.    I believe if you use two or more outlets at the same time, even the one marked 2 amp drops down to 1 amp.  I generally wouldn't use more than one at a time anyway as cigar sockets tends to blow fuses if I do.

Just looked on ebay for similar but I have had mine for a few years and they all look different now.  A wide range though so you might look through and check specs.

I also have a powerbank that can charge my phone or tablet between three or four times.

The one ken has linked is similar but without the two lighter pass through sockets.  Looks better made than mine too.

Thanks for that, I like the look of the ones Ken suggested, I fancy making one part of the dash somehow.

...I think I'll use the blanked off heater vent and mount it within that.

Use these type of step down devices before https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-DC-Car-Vo … 3844654680
For the dash the Neutrik USB sockets are nice https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Neutrik-USB- … 1834560554 and the rubber cover finishes off the look https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Neutrik-SCD- … 2457220551

Re: Mobile phone charging on the road

As long as you are 2A or over your charging rate should be normal like your home charger. Stereo ones tend to be low. I have dash monted ones like this but without the gimmick light.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Car-Dual … 1yTTVsgwgw

I wired that into a spare fuse box socket that goes off with the ignition to prevent main battery drain if i forget its left in. I also have the cigarette type one as the wife can charge her phone without cables being all over the dash as mine is down the RHS and it also runs the sat nav. I also have USB on my 240v sockets for when on hook up.

Re: Mobile phone charging on the road

As Casper said Radio's USB's most likley will be very low amp .......... Ive got a couple of those double ciggy/Power socket type and there marked 1A and IIRC 2.1A... or maybe3A

First off I had this added on the Liesure battery and charged a phone or two when stopped
mini_P1120349.jpeg
We also tend to cut power off at night along with gas bottle so tried to charge during day.... But.........
Then as we got more and more power hungry especially when on the move..........

I did this as listed here     https://dispatchexpertscudo.org.uk/foru … .php?id=83

This is my Latest addition as I'm tending to use USB for dash cam and the  Garmin Ive mounted on the dash
So as I was getting tight on available USB's and wanted less cable dangling all about

My Latest effort
mini_P1120842.jpeg
It took a bit of wiggling wires to find a route to fusebox........... I used a bit of gas welding wire taped to cable that helped me.............

you might even see it in the dark
P1120841.jpg

All power points are fused with a pig tail piggyback fuse thingy and if it's in the front ignition on dependent only

This one to the rear is flush to dash I only needed a hole big enough for wire at dash board joint and also screwed it into joint as you can see
