Well here I am again! It’s only about a month since I made my first post as the proud owner of a Mk2 Expert. Here is my latest, slightly impulsive purchase. 2006 Citroen Dispatch 1.9D WAV. Just over 90k on it. The Mk2 will soon have to be sold. Gutted as I love it.
I decided that as I really need to be spending every spare penny on my house renovation at the moment, I can’t afford the luxury of converting the mk2 van to a camper, when I can buy and convert a mk1 for less than the purchase price alone, of the mk2. And I’ve always loved the shape of the mk1s, so I’m pretty happy.
After lots of reading I chose a non turbo because of the simplicity of the mechanics (me not being a mechanic, but wanting to learn). I’ve now realised that the 1.9 non turbos don’t qualify for use in the Newcastle clean air zone, what a nightmare! In the short term I think I can manage this but I am already seriously considering the prospect of upgrading to an HDI or JTD. Sobs.
If it does come to that, any thoughts what this one might be worth on the open market? All the wheelchair features seem to work. Ramp, winch etc. 2 fixed and 2 folding seats in the back. No service history though. I’m the 3rd owner. Previous owner a mechanic who does seem to have maintained it well but service book lost.

Looks great! How are you enjoying it? Mine was a bit cheaper but a lot more miles and yours looks better condition, on the outside anyway.
Any grand plans for it? I’m hoping to do a very basic camper.

Another nice looking WAV! I'm so jealous of all of those windows haha, looks like a nice find. Looks like a bit of rust on the back of the sill that could be good to deal with sooner rather than later
For the Newcastle CAZ, I had to dodge that one recently too. Are the HDi's allowed in it? That said, the Newcastle CAZ is tiny, I had no issue going around it. And I think was fairly low cost if you *have* to use it. Might also be worth checking if WAVs are exempt
We need to arrange another DispatchExpertScudo meetup!

I’d definitely be down for a meet! There’s so much knowledge in this forum.
There is a bit of rust there but apparently it’s never needed welding (MOTs seem to support this) and it’s not an advisory on the most recent one. I thought it would have at least been an advisory but apparently not. I’m going to take the wire brush to it all soon, Jenolite it, paint and then I haven’t decided what to use to protect it, but I think it’s between Fluid Film and Dynax s50. I don’t have experience working on vehicles so I’m just going off recommendations. Really hoping that this van can be a bit of a hobby as well as transport as I’ve wanted to learn mechanics and bodywork for years.
Newcastle CAZ is small thankfully but my fastest commute skirts through it. I can still get to the office around it, so it’s not the end of the world. I haven’t double checked the HDIs are OK but there’s one on AutoTrader advertising itself as Euro 5, which I think is allowed. I’d have to make sure before I did any more impulse purchases. The charge has gone up to £12.50 which is a massive rip. Most expensive in the country. Blatant money grab

My first port of call when buying something new, regardless of history is the past MOT history. You can get an idea from that how well it's been taken care of. I also, if getting from ebay or gumtree, tend to buy a vehicle report. After that, literally the first thing i do is take it to my local garage and get them to put it through a mock MOT and tell me everything that they think needs doing to it or working on. Then i do what i can do and let them do the rest. Normally I get the timing belt and water pump done as one of the first jobs regardless of how new it looks. That being the one thing that can kill it if it goes. The rest just gets done bit by bit. Rust removal is generally very high on the list and fluid/filter changes plus a bottle of redex in the fuel tank.

I just checked a 55 plate Mk1 HDi and alas that also has to pay the £12.50. I'm guessing it's the DPF that makes it exempt, which afaik is only on the Mk2 models
It's worth noting that HDi isn't really an engine model/code. It's really a DW10 which has lots of sub-variants
I guess that makes the decision simpler?

Interesting! I just checked a 2004 Expert 2.0 HDI (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/van-details/202411116182721) and it checks out as being not required to pay. The plot thickens. I know there’s at least 2 different versions of that (I think), 8v and 16v? Could that have an impact?

I just entered the reg into the gubment's CAZ page and my 2006 2.0 16v HDI
has to pay in all CAZ zones in England bar Portsmouth.
This did not come as a surprise, who would expect our old bangers to get a free pass?
Newcastle/Gateshead is indeed the dearest at £12.50, Bristol by comparison is £9/day
I rarely go into town anyway but my bike and scoots are exempt so could use one of those

And now I remember, the main bridge across the Tyne is in the zone, that did cause me a hefty diversion

Which site did you use? I used the .gov one (https://www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones) and got no charge for the HDI on AutoTrader. I did use a different one previously which said every reg I checked had to pay and linked to a payment page but I was suspicious that one might have been a bit scammy so followed the links from the Newcastle CAZ website.
Although the Newcastle one is small, they seem to have strategically covered areas that end up covering a much larger area. My office (and home) aren’t in the area but the quickest route takes me along the quayside, probably a few hundred metres drive through the edge of the zone. Very annoying!

That is surprising. I just noticed though, gov.uk thinks it's a car not a van! So that'll be the difference.
I noticed it's an "Expert combi" whatever that means
It's even classed as a car for London's Low Emissions Zone! That's normally £100/day for us supposedly commercial vehicles

I know right! Also that's the difference for whether or not I need a van permit for the tip
That said, yours has all of the windows, yet is still a van
I wonder why the yellow one is a car. Maybe it used to have seats in the back? It does have the plastic covers over the wheel arches

The only plans are some more lights/larger reverse light as I live in the sticks. Other than that nothing planned as the reason we got it is to use it to carry a wheelchair/scooter.
Not driven it that much, only use it to take the missus out. Corsa B is my daily for work etc
