Odometer heat bonded ribbon repair, has anyone done this?

Hi, my van has the standard problem with the odometer LCD no longer displaying anything. Occasionally I get half a number etc etc but would like to repair it.

The backlight is working fine.

I've seen it mentioned that this is a problem with the ribbon that joins the LCD screen to the board.

Looking on YouTube, I found this video https://youtu.be/pmVOs5fPL48?si=Ef2u4aXdej3Uw8Oj

I've looked on his website that sells heat bonded ribbons to repair your own

https://www.akspeedo.com/fiat-citroen-p … repair.php

Looks simple enough to do but has anyone tried this repair and was it successful?

Thanks in advance.

Interesting, I've not worked on these vehicles clocks so can't speak from experience
but the vid looks like the same clock as we all have.
I had to laugh at 'pointer motors' which are in fact stepper motors
in the speedo and tacho which do, I'll admit, 'point'

I'd warm the ribbon connectors a wee bit to soften the glue
so that's a hair dryer not a heat gun job, this may also help lift the glue off
If you want a small amount of Acetone, nail varnish remover will probably do
as it's basically Acetone as long as its not mixed with anything else.
Isopropanol/denatured alcohol may do as well but not sure.

The vid doesn't show the reassembly with the new cable
The ribbon connector on the back of the speedo PCB looks easy enough to line up
the contacts,
but I'd suggest you pay special attention when locating the ribbon on the diplay end
as its important to get it correctly located.
To help do this I'd be inclined to cut small strips of masking tape and carefully fix them a smidge outside the outer edges of the old cables location before removing it to ensure the new cable gets fitted in exactly the same position.

Not tried it on a dashboard, but on a LCD clock (Jaguar XJ6 (X300))

As long as you have the right tools and able to control the temp so it's not overly hot that you start burning/setting things on fire, then it should be reasonably straightforward.

Oh nice, I just assumed they were gone when they're gone. Fortunately mine still shows most of the digits so no need to mess with mine

That said, I didn't realise the speedo needle motor was in the facia. I might be tempted to attempt to fix that if it's there...

for those interested this is breakdown of the ACF process
Basically, heat ( circa 80C) and pressure is used to get the conductive particles to align and the adhesive to set.

Anyone with experience of changing a heat bonded ribbon like this?

How likely is this to be the problem? Or could the LCD itself need replacing, or is there no way of knowing without trial and error...

For £17 odd including the needed flat brass soldering iron end I think it's worth a go?

yeah i have in the past.. it can be hard but with a solder rework station its not so bad. flux paste and the fine tip for the hand held part of the rework station. you only have to blast it for about 3 seconds and the solder repairs its self. you dont even need to add more.. the flux does all the work for you!

I was under the impression there was no solder involved. Just a conductive glue?
