As ridiculous as this sounds, those seats might be worth more than the rest of the van, just based on supply and demand, and what I see things priced at on eBay. Swivel seats for mk1/mk2 vans, in good condition, go for several hundreds.
Hi folks, me again. When I bought my van last week the previous owner told me the radio had worked until he changed the battery a few weeks back, and since then it’s been displaying “11 ERROR” as in the pic. I’ve had it out and I think worked out the code, but I can’t seem to get the radio into a state where it is receptive to codes. Does anyone have any advice?
Or, if anyone can recommend an aftermarket head unit with Bluetooth, that is a simple replacement (I’m not a pro) and doesn’t break the bank, I’d consider that.
Thanks all, in advance.

@kenbw2 you need yourself some more windows
I just entered the reg into the gubment's CAZ page and my 2006 2.0 16v HDI
has to pay in all CAZ zones in England bar Portsmouth.
This did not come as a surprise, who would expect our old bangers to get a free pass?
Newcastle/Gateshead is indeed the dearest at £12.50, Bristol by comparison is £9/dayI rarely go into town anyway but my bike and scoots are exempt so could use one of those
Which site did you use? I used the .gov one (https://www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones) and got no charge for the HDI on AutoTrader. I did use a different one previously which said every reg I checked had to pay and linked to a payment page but I was suspicious that one might have been a bit scammy so followed the links from the Newcastle CAZ website.
Although the Newcastle one is small, they seem to have strategically covered areas that end up covering a much larger area. My office (and home) aren’t in the area but the quickest route takes me along the quayside, probably a few hundred metres drive through the edge of the zone. Very annoying!

I just checked a 55 plate Mk1 HDi and alas that also has to pay the £12.50. I'm guessing it's the DPF that makes it exempt, which afaik is only on the Mk2 models
Interesting! I just checked a 2004 Expert 2.0 HDI (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/van-details/202411116182721) and it checks out as being not required to pay. The plot thickens. I know there’s at least 2 different versions of that (I think), 8v and 16v? Could that have an impact?

I haven't a clue but would be very interested to know.
Mileage, advisories, etc?
Decided to eBay it
I’d definitely be down for a meet! There’s so much knowledge in this forum.
There is a bit of rust there but apparently it’s never needed welding (MOTs seem to support this) and it’s not an advisory on the most recent one. I thought it would have at least been an advisory but apparently not. I’m going to take the wire brush to it all soon, Jenolite it, paint and then I haven’t decided what to use to protect it, but I think it’s between Fluid Film and Dynax s50. I don’t have experience working on vehicles so I’m just going off recommendations. Really hoping that this van can be a bit of a hobby as well as transport as I’ve wanted to learn mechanics and bodywork for years.
Newcastle CAZ is small thankfully but my fastest commute skirts through it. I can still get to the office around it, so it’s not the end of the world. I haven’t double checked the HDIs are OK but there’s one on AutoTrader advertising itself as Euro 5, which I think is allowed. I’d have to make sure before I did any more impulse purchases. The charge has gone up to £12.50 which is a massive rip. Most expensive in the country. Blatant money grab
Hello, I got my 1.9D WAV for £1700 with 36k on the clock, its a mk1 but an early 07. No service history like yours
Looks great! How are you enjoying it? Mine was a bit cheaper but a lot more miles and yours looks better condition, on the outside anyway.
Any grand plans for it? I’m hoping to do a very basic camper.
Well here I am again! It’s only about a month since I made my first post as the proud owner of a Mk2 Expert. Here is my latest, slightly impulsive purchase. 2006 Citroen Dispatch 1.9D WAV. Just over 90k on it. The Mk2 will soon have to be sold. Gutted as I love it.
I decided that as I really need to be spending every spare penny on my house renovation at the moment, I can’t afford the luxury of converting the mk2 van to a camper, when I can buy and convert a mk1 for less than the purchase price alone, of the mk2. And I’ve always loved the shape of the mk1s, so I’m pretty happy.
After lots of reading I chose a non turbo because of the simplicity of the mechanics (me not being a mechanic, but wanting to learn). I’ve now realised that the 1.9 non turbos don’t qualify for use in the Newcastle clean air zone, what a nightmare! In the short term I think I can manage this but I am already seriously considering the prospect of upgrading to an HDI or JTD. Sobs.
If it does come to that, any thoughts what this one might be worth on the open market? All the wheelchair features seem to work. Ramp, winch etc. 2 fixed and 2 folding seats in the back. No service history though. I’m the 3rd owner. Previous owner a mechanic who does seem to have maintained it well but service book lost.

I’ve sorted the blower now, thanks folks. Checked the fuses again and found a blown one I’d missed first time round ?♂️ Interested to see whether the fuse blows again when I test it again!
Hi folks, so I’ve impulse purchased a mk1 1.9 Dispatch WAV, for general use and conversion to very basic camper. Full “new van” post to follow (and may ask for some advice on valuing the mk2 van I recently bought and will now have to sell ?)
One of the reasons I chose this mk1 is that it has AC and I have a dog. I knew there’d be a good chance it would need attention given the age but thought repair would be cheaper/easier than retrofitting.
When driving the van home yesterday, the blower/heater all seemed to be working well. Had it on full heat, full fan, just testing it all out. Pressed the AC button and everything stopped. There seems to be a low level of ventilation coming through now but I’ve only checked this while driving so not sure if there’s any actual power there. Any thoughts? No advice is too simple, I have very little mechanical/automotive electrical experience. Sort of another reason I picked this van, something to learn on.
Thanks in advance!
Your van looks lovely. How come even with that one you still want a Mk1?
What's your aim with the de-conversion? Like you say it's good storage space. So other than plywood over the top of the gap and an access hatch, what sort of things do you need to make it what you want?
Thanks! I do love this van, I’m just a sucker for old vehicles. And as I’m not a mechanic, or even very experienced working on vehicles, I was hoping to get one of the non-turbo diesels and try to do some of the work it needed, as required, myself, with the help of a more knowledgeable friend. Something to learn on would be a good way of putting it.
In terms of what I want from this van, it currently just looks a bit not-great (sorry, can’t think of a better way of putting that, haven’t had my coffee yet) at the back. From certain angles inside I can see daylight through the seals along the bottom of the tailgate. I’ll have to get some photos and post them later today. I would like a standard back bumper, if that’s possible. Currently the hinge that the ramp was on is held in place just by screws which are holding a piece of plywood in place over the lowered floor. This really requires photos to aid the description, but the previous owner has installed 3 section of plywood over the lowered floor section, so the floor in the back is essentially flat but the ply can be lifted giving access to the space. The piece nearest the back is only about 10” long (from memory) and that’s the only piece that’s been screwed down, thus preventing the tailgate latch section hinging open. Pics to follow as soon as the sun is up!
Slightly different note, I might be purchasing an 807 spares or repairs today, for the rotating front seats. Rather excited for that as it would mark the beginning of the conversion and would spur me on to get going with it.
Hi folks, after trying to find a mk1 van to convert, I’ve settled on a mk2, a 2015 Expert Tepee “Independence”. The previous owner has rather amateurishly removed the ramp. I’ve had a scan through the forum and can’t find much info but please feel free to signpost me either on the forum or anywhere. I’m wanting to spend some time and money converting the van to a camper, for my use but to a high enough standard that it would be an attractive purchase for someone else (I still have dreams of a lovely mk1 camper for myself). Current problem is I don’t really know where to start with getting the rear to a sort of blank canvas. I’m not a mechanic or joiner or anything like that, but a keen and usually fairly able DIY-er, but I don’t mind paying someone to sort this out. What I’m hoping for is for it to pretty much just look “normal” from the outside. Then I’ll use the dropped floor space as storage. I’ve seen people use it for consumer unit, diesel heater (opposite ends).
Is this even possible? Any advice or signposting at all would be very much appreciated. Thanks ??
You would be paying £2000+ for a pop top!
Quotes I’ve seen recently are newer £4k! (With fitting). I haven’t shopped about much but would want to go reputable with a pop top.
I'd say it depends on your definition of "really good condition" and "low miles". These engines will run for 200,000 miles but of course they're at best 17 years old and will have the signs to match.
Couple of WAVs just appeared on the forum, they've got really good deals by the looks
£5k seems steep *could* be a good deal if its pros are worth it to you, but it could be a case of trading off risk for a lower price
That said, if you get the 1.9 engines there's very little to go wrong. The 2.0s are good too but a little more complex
Body components are common throughout, but easily dealt with
Watch out for rust. Rust isn't terminal, but can be a cat-and-mouse chase (I speak from personal experience...)
That one went quickly so I’m guessing it was decent. Just viewed a mk1 Expert this afternoon, something like 25k on it, non turbo, looked mint in the advert but had a look underneath and looked pretty darn rotten. No indication on previous MOTs I should expect that extent of corrosion.
DIY mate. On my third conversion and i have changed the internals around a few times to sort out first trip snagging. I have no electrical skills yet managed to put in 240v hook up, consumer box and plug sockets. Fit solar panels, controller, leisure batteries and split charger. Wire in the full 12v system and gas n water plumbing. Plenty you tube videos and how to guides out there
Thanks, DIY it is then! It will be my first but I’m pretty good at following YouTube videos and I’ve got a very handy mate who wants to convert his VW and he suggested little working parties where we’re working on them together. Next question! I’ve been looking for ages trying to find a van I really love that isn’t £30k and only settled on mk1 Dispatch/Expert/Scudo fairly recently, so I don’t know the market well yet - how often do really good condition, low miles vans come up? There’s a very low mileage, ex police Expert available currently but it’s £5k + vat. Seems a bit steep but also from what I can tell it’s fairly unique.
Hi all, first time posting. Name isn’t “damp brown”, that was an autocorrect when signing up, but it’ll do for now.
I’ve been eyeing up a Mk1 Scudo camper and Mk1 Expert camper, both already converted to a high standard, professionally, with pop top and electrical hook up etc. I’m struggling to get even ballpark estimates out of conversion companies. Has anyone paid to have one of these converted recently or are you all handy enough to DIY!? The alternative is to find a good solid base van and do it myself, very, slowly.
