Jeez that's rough looking!
I was skeptical myself about the frequency measurement but you take 3 measurements and it gives you the average, the only other cheap way I could find of measuring the tension was the twist test but I simply don't have the years of experience to know if it was tight enough or not.
from what I've read online it "seem"s renault used to use the same gauge as fiat, citroen, peugeot and changed to a harmonics gauge which I believe works much the same. these gauges are much cheaper than the seem gauge but I didn't see the need to buy one just yet.

These are the instructions I found, it gives belt tension in both seem units and Hz which I found useful, hopefully it helps someone else out too!

Well I finally got round to finishing my timing belt at the weekend, the tensioner in the kit I ordered arrived damaged in the box and it took them weeks to get a replacement out to me, it was free of charge so not all bad.
I found an app for my phone from gates that works like a guitar tuner and you pluck the belt to get a Hz reading so I used that to gauge the correct tension of the belt, I was a little nervous before turning the key but thankfully it fired right up so I'm happy out.

Well I managed to lock and mark the camshaft, crankshaft (removed the starter motor) and fuel pump yesterday and I got up early to go at it again, did the idler pulley and waterpump today but had to stop there because the new tensioner came out of the box damaged from the bolt that was packaged with it, I'll try pick one up tomorrow after work, I also dropped the bloody Tx50 bit for the engine mount into the engine bay, I spent ages looking for it with magnets and what not but its vanished: D

The old waterpump had a lot of sealant on it,
I didn't use any, the instructions said not to.

It's a good site that a great resource, it has serial number lookup too which is handy for identifying what rust bucket I've brought home this time!  lol
I'v had that little scoot for about 15yrs now, I wanted to keep it looking as original as possible but make it a bit wicked, so myself and a mate built a naughty engine for it, and I've upgraded the tyres and shocks too. It's surprised a few lads on bigger bikes which is a good laugh when we meet at the next traffic lights.
It started life with about 3hp, its now just under 25hp and weighs nothing, I love getting out on it!

No worries man we're all talking about the same motorbike nonsense anyway  lol
The ramp folds in two and stands upright behind the back doors.
I removed the wheelchair belts and straps and am reusing the metal loops they were attached to as my anchor points for straps.

I have one of those wheel chocks for a workbench I'm going to try make a baseplate for it that uses the front seat floor bolts and try to figure out a way that I can remove the chock easily when it's not in use. Perhaps some wingnuts would be the job!

#8 Re: General Discussion » My 'New' van » 2024-10-14 17:43:01

Tidy work on the insulation and skylight!
My van doesn't have that lower bulkhead panel but it does have blanks in the floor I wonder is it a bolt in/out affair? Failing that a wedge of wood bolted in the middle might be handy for rolling the front wheel up and between the front seats.
If section 1&3 were the same section 2 could be a lift out section held in with toggles or something easy for when you do need the extra space.
Just thinking out loud here sorry  lol

Yeah I had seen a few Twisting the belt on the long upper side of it alright I'll do a bit more research, I had asked a local mechanic for a quote on a few jobs, fitting the springs and belts being two of them, he took all my details 6 weeks ago and I've heard nothing since so I said f**k it I'm have a go meself.

#10 Re: General Discussion » My new van » 2024-10-13 22:53:04

Awesome job!
I've been on the lookout for one of these vans for quite a while and had considered a few with the bulkhead, hauling bikes was my main reason for wanting a van and I had planned on making a cutout just for the front wheel to poke through in the center of the bulkhead to facilitate loading bikes, I would have preferred a panel van originally but the one I got came up cheap locally so I went for it.

Well if anyone wants my old springs and wants to send a courier or pay postage they're yours, I'm in Ireland. Otherwise I'll give 'em to the scrap man.

Thanks man, any suggestions on getting the tension on the belt right?

Also is there a tidy way of draining the coolant beforehand? Every youtube video I've watched people just seem to pull the water pump off and let the coolant out everywhere, which I'd like to avoid since I'm doing it in my driveway.

Hi folks,
I'm about to do my water pump and timing belt kit.
I've read through the service guide and it recommends using a specific tool for measuring the tension on the belt. I've searched online and can't seem to find one for sale.
Has anyone used an alternative tool they can recommend?

Mine was originally a 6 seater, was yours a panel van? It could also be that the panel vans are sprung to carry more weight than the people carriers.

Way cool!
Sounds like you've earned yourself a beer or two today  big_smile

Sweet! Any pics of the new bike? (In or out of the van)

Wahey! I fitted my new 'lower' springs on all four corners. I'm not sure it's all that much lower to be honest but the van definitely feels firmer.
When I stood in the back and bounced before it was very springy and soft now it's much stiffer so I'm fairly pleased that it should be able to handle the motorbikes a bit better now.
I do wonder if the rear springs were so soft as part of the WAV conversion to make it more comfortable for the wheelchair passenger.

I've used this online tool to visualise the differences between wheel sets, real life may be different but it's handy.

#21 Re: Maintenance » heater core removal » 2024-10-09 22:35:08

big_smile I assumed it was like a motorcycle radiator, with metal headers, scrap that idea so!
I saw a video on YouTube where someone ran the exhaust through a small household radiator, that's where I got the idea. I figured a small automotive rad would have better fins/ surface area to give off heat.

#22 Re: Maintenance » heater core removal » 2024-10-09 19:22:08

Do you by any chance have one of those Chinese diesel cabin heaters?
If so you could try route the exhaust of it through 'THE MATRIX' and recover some extra heat.
A mate of mine has one is his camper and raves about it.
I keep promising myself I'll get one for my shed.

Outstanding! Well done lad  cool

#25 Re: General Discussion » Cup holder? » 2024-10-08 15:37:50

If it were me I'd just buy a cup that fits the door, beer cans are a perfect fit if you'd like to bring one along for comparison  wink
