Not used my van for about 5 weeks, jumped in it today and drove non stop to Leeds for 2 hours, sat comfortably at 70mph there and back.
Always reliable.
Time for a sneaky stealth camping trip I reckon, though I'll have to pack my thermals!

#277 Re: Maintenance » Installing Electric Windows » 2018-01-07 21:01:47

Following this as my only minor gripe is the lack of electric windows in my 04 van, I've become lazy in my old age!

#278 Re: Maintenance » Upgrade Headlights? » 2017-12-25 17:41:48

I asked a question on here a little while ago about spotlights, someone directed me to a universal bracket that bolts behind the number plate to mount spots on. I'm going to have a go at making one. I've always thought the lights on my Dispatch were quite good, but the boy racer in me wants some spots on the front!!

#279 Re: Maintenance » Key - HELP » 2017-12-10 22:06:46

Got my son on the case with a tiny, needle tip in his soldering iron. He's managed to solder the surface mount microswitch back on, and it works! Proud of him!

#280 Re: Maintenance » Key - HELP » 2017-12-09 12:00:51

£164 from a Citroen dealer, and they'd use the key blade off the old one....

#281 Re: Maintenance » Key - HELP » 2017-12-08 19:23:30

Ive had my first quote (from an independent key fob person), £193.....

#282 Re: Maintenance » Key - HELP » 2017-12-06 20:17:55

I spoke to a mate who owns a garage, he said there are kits on eBay.
I had a look and their are new outer covers for our keys (some of the ones for other cars have replacement microswitches included), and new switches can be bought separately I think (I need to check the ones for a Peugeot 806).
The trouble is that they are Surface Mount Technology, so a fine soldering iron tip, good eyesight and a steady hand is needed.

This isn't looking good so far......

Hi, when I bought my van I only got one key. The remote fob has stopped working, meaning I have to clamber in through the back to unlock the front door. The micro switch has come off the circuit board, and although my son is going to have a go at soldering it back on (his eyesight is better than mine) I'm not holding out much hope. How easy is it to get replacement key fob, and more to the point, how much??
Cheers

#284 Re: General Discussion » HDi vans » 2017-08-28 09:54:46

Luthier, I had a visit up to Scotland a couple of weeks ago and got 45mpg out of it.

#285 Re: General Discussion » HDi vans » 2017-08-26 21:31:06

I bought my HDi at 177K miles, I've had it 14 months. It had the cam belt done when I got it, I was given the garage receipt.
I've serviced it twice, put a battery on it and replaced the exhaust centre section. I had to do a couple of patches underneath for the MOT.
Quite happy to plan on replacing the pads and shoes when they need it.
I need to spray underneath with Waxoyl.
It's been one of the best vehicles I've had.
Economical and reliable.

#287 Re: General Discussion » Rear Ladder and Spare Wheel » 2017-08-18 13:33:35

A bonnet mounted spare? Like I had on a Landrover!

#288 Re: General Discussion » Monkeynut's Old, Red Scudo :-) » 2017-08-15 22:50:46

I don't like doing boots, so good luck, the track rod end and lower arm should be OK to do.
Keep us posted

Despite not having done any of the minor jobs on the van I headed off again.
Day One
Headed south on the A roads through Shrewsbury, Leominster etc to the border near Hay on Wye (I cheated and had a pub meal and crashed at my cousin's)
Day Two
Walked up Hay Bluff and Lord Hereford's Knob, had a snooze in the back then trucked up through Builth Wells through Llangurig to the A44 and slept in a layby. Ubiquitous packet pasta cooked on my Trangia for tea.
Day Three
Walked up Plynlimon, then drove to the coast, stopped in Aberystwyth then motored up to Machynlleth and stopped short of Barmouth in a layby. Pasta for tea again.
Day Four
Weather foul, turned back and descended off an obscure mountain, Diffwys.
Drove up past Harlech, Portmadog etc., weather still rubbishy had a snooze in a layby. Parked up on a piece of ground near the beach.
Day Five
Returned home via the A55, a good run, nice weather but limbs aching and I needed to head back.
No problems, a good run

I'll be interested in seeing what you buy. It's always a fear, the van not starting.

#291 Re: Camper Conversions » A quick trip up north » 2017-08-08 10:47:10

Great inspiration OAT, I must admit when it went dark I went to sleep, so didn't use my torch, I'll still wire up my lights though.
Unlikely to be valve stem oil seals if it's only smoking on start up
Personally I ignore a cold engine, it spends most of its time at its optimum running temp so that's when I take notice of any problems

Hi, I decided to head up north even though there are still plenty of jobs to do on the conversion.
Day One
SW Lancs to the border; filled up, stopped off at Carnforth to see a friend, got some grub at Aldi, cooked using my Trangia, parked up in a lay by near Longtown
Day Two
Headed up to Thankerton, climbed Ben Tinto, had a sleep in the back before heading towards The Forest of Galloway, stopped somewhere en route
Day Three
Headed towards Newton Stewart with a view to climbing Cairnsmore of Fleet, great drive on the Raiders Road through the forest, more of a track 20mph max, spotted loads of great places to stay next time. Torrential rain all day so headed back (I needed to be back on Monday anyway)
Things to do to the van;
Essential: interior lights, charging system etc
Desirable: still fancy putting some spotlights on the front!
544 miles on 54.75 litres
45.1 mpg (approx.)

#293 Re: Camper Conversions » Leisure battery - How small is too small?? » 2017-07-27 18:11:40

I was given a Yuasa YBX3054 12v 36Ah car battery by a mate, whilst it's not a leisure battery I'm only planning on running a couple of LED lights and a USB charger like the original poster. The dimensions are small enough that I considered mounting it under the bonnet.

#294 Re: Camper Conversions » Simple bed made from futon » 2017-07-26 07:14:00

Alas, sadly only LHD for the Euro market, would that be correct?

#295 Re: Camper Conversions » Simple bed made from futon » 2017-07-25 22:16:19

Wow!
Did they do a version with the extension panel between the side door and the front door?
The possibilities with that would be boundless

#296 Re: Camper Conversions » Simple bed made from futon » 2017-07-24 21:16:30

I must admit that I only realised there was a long wheelbase version when I was ordering my exhaust. True, I've never seen a LWB Jumpy etc in this country. They would be worth a go!

#297 Re: Camper Conversions » Simple bed made from futon » 2017-07-23 19:34:41

Cheers Casper, you seem to have done a lot to your big van.
I did a Relay a couple of years ago but wanted something a bit smaller for day to day use.

Simple frame made from Sterling board, the bed folds out and sits on the wheel arches.
I wanted something that I could remove if I needed to.
A bit of storage under the futon seat for bedding, food etc.
(Sorry the photos are sideways, I'm amazed I managed to upload them!)

#299 Re: General Discussion » Driver position is putting me off from buying! Bulkhead? » 2017-06-28 22:00:54

I'm 6'2" and 17st, I'm not fat just...we'll sort of large ish..

Mine had a mesh bulkhead in which I removed and got the seat back further to make it more comfortable.

And I got a tenner for the mesh bulkhead!

Yes the column cover needs to be removed. The instructions are on the Maintenance thread under Speedo/Heater lights
