If you've posted in the right MK1 section, then 90% is a "lazy starter" most likely culprit, wiring snapped somewhere or drenched in too much dirt/oil
Bah I knew they would have done do something to make it incompatible so you can't put the larger alternator on.
I was worried when I bought a vehicle with an ECU.. guhh. No way at all to trick it into giving out full power all the time... Like how alternators used to be? To be honest I would rather change the regulator out with an old fashioned style that just uses a bit of resistance to excite the coils. It was a bit of a faf trying to get it in with the Aircon pump in the way.I have become very lazy when it comes to working on vehicles.. I even paid someone to fit this for me. I did however go through all of the wiring to make sure it was all good.
Yeah costly but I managed to get it when it was on sale for about half the price.
Hmm how can I get the vin from in the house without going to where the van is parked up (miles away).. I sadly never use it much now the old panda is on the road.
AHH V5 should have it.. want me to PM it you?
VIN is on V5 too, but that's gonna be a task for sometimes later, if not for after the opp now... Sorry
(Off to hospital tonight/tomorrow, repairs on the bodge done on one of the knees on Monday, so it's frightening amount of shit to do beforehand.)
Or punch in yourself, then be careful selecting absolutely identical one for spec, then there are sites that will give you correct "aftermarket" parameters etc. Once again it is the damn intelligent regulator chip, that makes or brakes whole deal, and thank fudgge, it's not programable like most of the rest of bits and bobs
https://www.ssg.asia/
Both of you are wrong
Particular alternator regulators are making all the difference in operating charge regardless of rmp. So if small connector doesn't commute with (LIN 1, 1.1 , or 2 or 3) or even it is different chip all together - it will never work correctly.
Got to find correct P/N , normally it's Valeo and then pick the correct aftermarket alternator in accordance.
Post here or PM me your VIN, I'll do my best in the morning to find you what's needed/suited etc etc.
Why (good mechanics) only happen (to everyone else) but me?
I swear, you are rubbing in deliberately
On a serious note, congrats, lucky you!
Unfortunately the newer the cars, the shorter life span they'll last by design
I've replaced both the starter and alternator. Both easy enough jobs
Wish I didn't learn to NOT to touch cars in early 2000's...
Basically, with almost no tools it taken me whole day of sweat and tears and bruises and swearing and drilling and filling and all sorts to replace brake discs, pads and shoes on the rear for a "water- drop" Vauxhall Astra... next year took to a mechanic and had the same job done in 40 min flat, no rush, no stress at a measly £25 them days (£50 in todays money), then I changed the car and had a "fighter jet" SAAB 900 2.2 Turbo and attempted to replace CV boot... bruh!... ended getting mechanic to come over to "finish" the job in a sense that I had drive shaft falling out and damaging all sorts right in the middle of Landan... (one little spring clip fallen out, most likely due to not noticing position where the "cut" for the circumference was for the end off), couldn't even get it tow to get to his. Bless the old boy, "blessing" being £350 (£700 in todays money).
Never since I'll do anything, without being 100% sure I'll be able to complete confidently, but "mechanics" (rip-off monkey wrenches) these neck of the woods making me think twice about all of that lately
Found the problem. I decided to start my search on the drivers side and got lucky. Found the the after market immobiliser had cooked.
Removed all associated wiring and resoldered wires that had been cut. Working better than ever now.
Lucky you!
Thanks for keeping us "in the loop"
Your wiring loom cooked somewhere I'm afraid and there's no quick fix to it, but to find where exactly and start by re'isolating each wire.
Think I need a bigger welder!
Ouch!
That looks like a lot of work to get anywhere near acceptable for MOT state.
That's if you got someone capable to sort it out for you.
Condolences! ?
@GSF WAI starter with delivery £65 seems very reasonable, but mechanics this way is just dire...
However, alternators, they are so cheap, so many on FleaBay, I'd get one for about £25- 30 and so simple to fit(replace)- I'd give it a shot myself. I've no doubts you could sort it out no probs!
As it comes to tandy pandas... Up to you, what you are using it for
Bleepin' 'ell!!!
Just as I thought to have found reasonable (mobile) mechanic this way...
£80 for a change of alternator, not even an invoice...
FTFY

NOT sorry for spoiling your fun if any of you are a participant.
My van in appearance alone screams dodgy not doggy, doDgy!
"great"

Does he do so in a hope to make money or just for the sake of being annoying?
For a moment I thought Longniddry Bents was a euphemism until I realised it was a real place
![]()
North Berwick I know because of a family connection and knew there was a town called Longniddry
but the bents was unknown to me and caused a snigger or two.
OMG, family connections in all?
I'll get my coat!

We have a few beaches along the East Lothian cost what is on a UK list for dogging hotspots.
Rather curious how do you come to know the site and hotspots?
Longniddry Bents mate. Just along the road from me in North Berwick. How handy is that

Yeah, I know I said it
Not big deal, we WILL judge you what you do or don't in it.
Should've known better to NOT to trust peoples promises on interwebz?

Doesn't sound terminal, but that's coming from someone who's spent probably 7x the value of the van on repairs
Close, but not that much!
(Ignoring "big adventure" to get my parcel (misdelivered))
Starter is here, but mechanic isn't responding now, got to be dogging somewhere!
Had a mechanic over to check if I'm clever? Yes!
Ordered NEW starter from GSF (forgotten how bad that set up is), so gonna watch paint drying for couple more days, then gonna get mechanic to replace it

Oh I dunno
Dogging comes to mind
I hear some folk are very keen on that sort of thingDoggingaction.co.uk

I hear some folk are very keen on that sort of thingI didn't know it at the time, but I think I was propositioned once when someone asked me "do you have any dogs in there?"
I was like, um no? Why? "Oh, we're just putting ours in the car"
I was very confused until I was later informed what they probably meant by "dogs".
Not to mention the time I was in a woodland car park repairing my internal light wiring. Apparently flashing your lights is a signal
Not you, nor your looks, it's the van, that screams "dogging'mobile"
Not big deal, we won't judge you what you do or don't in it.
She's been good to me for the last 7/8 years, I've owned her, never once let me down up to today... might be worth £200 in spares for someone? or do a ULEZ trade in thingy's
Bad points:
Chassis plenty of rust, insides of outer seals (where the jacking points are) bodged up with fiberglass resin (without fibber glass) to get through last MOT ... kinda can't see no rust, hard as nails, but rather obvious "play of the rules", so my MOT centre, I take my cars to, told to not bother bring her back...
MOT- 17'th October (Taxed for now)
Engine is as guttles, but as good as ever, starter apart.
Really good roof-rack, had x12 sheets of 12mm plasterboard and x20 8x2" at 3.6m long (plus load of tools) once and whining apart, drove 20 miles, haven't collapsed, nor I got tyres exploding or digging in to the road.
Bad? starter decided to turn her very slowly, second time not at all. Good old (young) lad at Sainzburys helped to "bump" (push) start
Press "s" in living memory of it
Gimme any ideas, you might have
Cheers!
Can they weld?
I'm .. I've ruined my new keyboard with beer snots

Would they pay me for company and service?
Up 'n running again
TY for keeping us "in the loop"
Good on you, hope it'll last!
Would this be the same as the test for a Freelander, remove leak off pipes and turn ignition on, check no diesel is escaping or is it more involved. When I had this with a Freelander it was difficult to start and had low fuel pressure fault. I assume they would have been removed to skim the head so if they need to be removed it should be reasonably easy
Would this be a good investment https://tools4car.co.uk/product/lexia-3/
Literally injector return pipes connected to x4 bottles, 10-15 min will tell you if something isn't performing as it should.
Lexia3 is a good thing, but it requires DiagBox, that's significant pain in the backside on it's own, however the "savings" I've made taking my car to all sorts of mechanics for diagnostics would've paid for itself tenfold.
Your "mysterious" loss of power should've produced some sort off errors, if your garage is decent, surely they had it tested. so, you getting one might be just getting it, not curing or even answering what's wrong.
I'm still guestimating to 1- turbo leaky; 2 something not 100% with injection, but both would've produced errors ... that doesn't make much sense, unfortunately
