Today I went to a rent a ramp place because the speed sensor/sender is in such an awkward place. Pulled the sensor out of the diff, losing a lot of gearbox oil in the process, only to find it's different to the new Febi one I bought.

The new Febi one has a square drive up inside the hole where the shaft with gear on goes - mine has no square drive inside. The part number of the Febi part corresponds with the Fiat part no, so I don't understand. Anyway, a massive waste of time and money as I still have the old one fitted as I had to put it back in.

This is the one I bought -

You can just see the square drive inside on here. Mine doesn't have this.

Thanks, Ken. The cv joint is original from factory. I've had the van since 2.5 years old, so know it's never been changed.

However it will be heading for the bin the second this latest boot pulls out or splits.  devil

Yes, thanks Casper. I realised what you were referring to, and asked them to have a look.

Yes, when I went Incredible Hulk with the crimper on the ear of clip and made sure no grease under boot where it's clamped on - it just tore right around next to the clip in no time.

Photo isn't my cv, just for illustration purposes of where it tore.

Thanks again for your replies. I think I'll be putting on a new shaft before resorting to jubilee clips.

To the garage today, again. roll

Dropped van off early this morning. Bloke on reception said they would take shaft off, strip, degrease, inspect, reassemble and regrease. Then fit yet another (number 7!!!!!! ) new boot - another OEM Fiat item. Then take it for extended test drive, stopping off in a car park for some circular, full-lock action.

Picked it up in afternoon and they said they had done eveything they said and no problems. So far.

As ever, very grateful for everyone's help and advice on this one. Watch this space!

Thought I would just reheat this old topic as I may be in the market for a new driveshaft soon. Are members still happy with J&R?

A new shaft for my van is £65 inc next day del. Seems a very good price.

#32 Re: General Discussion » Is There A Problem With Scudo Nearside Outer CV Boots? » 2024-06-05 17:09:45

Thanks to both of you for your replies and some ideas of what may be causing it. Obviously something unusual is happening. Will poss suggest some further investigations with garage.

If a clip is installed that's fitted normally, the boot just pulls out of it. When I fitted boot no 3 myself, I made sure that there wasn't any grease on the lip of the boot that fits over joint or any grease on the outside of joint where boot fits onto. Then I crimped the clip on with the correct tool super tight. In this case, the boot obviously couldn't pull out from clip, so it tore right through around it's circumference in no time. So whether the clip is normal or extra tightness it makes no odds. All leads to what you are saying - the shaft may be pulling on the joint because something is worn.

Taking the van back to the gearbox specialists that fitted the last boot. Their work has always been faultless in the past and they have a good reputation. This makes me think that it's highly unlikely they have fitted the clip wrongly twice on the latest new boot - an OEM genuine Fiat part.

Watch this space!    sad

I've got a huge problem with something that should be so simple. All attempts by 2 garages and myself to get a new n/side outer cv boot to stay in place and not come adrift on the large/outer end clip have ended in failure. Now on boot number 5 including the original. The story so far -

Boot 1 - the original from new, lasted 18 years before it split and needed replacement

Boot 2 - less flexible plastic type pattern boot fitted by garage. Large clip disappeared after fitting. Next new clip still attached, but boot has pulled out of it. Tried a third clip, but this one disappeared as well.

Boot 3 - decided to try a universal softer rubber stretch boot fitted by me. Lasted about a month before completely splitting all around it's circumference just inboard of the large clip

Boot 4 - Rigid plastic type pattern boot fitted by gearbox specialist. Within a week the boot had pulled out of the large clip

Boot 5 - Went back to gearbox specialist and they tried an OEM genuine Fiat boot, which is the softer rubber type this time. Lasted about 10 days before the large clip disappeared - yet again!!! Van going back on Thursday for them to have another look.

I'm tearing my hair out with this one. Does anyone have any experience of cv boots on Scudos, particularly nearside, being such a big problem? It seems almost like the boots maybe too short and are straining in the clips maybe on max steering lock. But that's just my guess? Any thoughts - please!!

I'm guessing a 16V would have twin cams? But I don't know about these things.

I've had my van for 17 years, so I feel like I should know this. I always assumed it was 8 valve engine, but when I put my reg in oil checkers and parts finders, etc it comes up with 16 valve. I just wondered if this was right, and how I can check without pulling the head off.

Thanks for any help.

I'm in France at the moment, down in Lot and Garonne department. A bar I go to in the evening has a small pizza kiosk outside where I sometimes buy a pizza to soak up the fizzy lager. Bloke who runs it has a late MK1 model facelift Expert. Pointed out my Scudo of a similar vintage to him which was parked near his van.

He told me that his Expert has done 408,000 Kms/253,000 miles. I thought that was a very good mileage for these vans, though I'm sure that some have done more. Mine is only on 108,000 miles, so just run in. Does anyone know of any of the Mk1s that have done higher mileage - what's the highest you've heard of?

I think the pizza man's van was a 2.0 Hdi like mine. Are 2.0s more likely to reach higher mileages than 1.9s, or doesn't it matter?

No, never seen police doing speed checks. Was a sneaky fixed Gatso type somewhere near Dordogne/Limousin border. Sat nav poss warned me, but was rushing to get north so blundered on without noticing anything. First thing I knew was a 45 Euro fine through post as I was only just over.

Last trip when I got speeding fine I had a hire car from Bergerac. So French authorities got my info from hire company in France.

This trip I've taken the Scudo as the hire car cost really adds up, especially as I extended trip several times. Much nicer having my own vehicle on this trip. Plus if I pick up a ticket, maybe I'll get off Scot free.

My speedo did this, but the odometer and trip meter continued incrementing. Obviously a fault with the dashboard itself.

That said, mine's an old school one with no ECU, so I can't rule out a computer problem.

Yes, if just the speedo I would be thinking it's at fault. But as three different things went at once plus a bit of engine hesitancy that started same time - duff sensor or wiring fault seems most likely.

How did you remedy yours, Ken?

My first thought is that the sensor (wherever it is--I haven't found mine yet) is going to be more vulnerable to weather and physical damage. So I'd check for corroded or broken wiring near the sensor, then if that doesn't show anything I'd try another sensor.

The good news is that, when everything fails at once, that's usually a sign of a simple fault :-)

Roops

Thanks for your reply, Roopid. Good that you think it is a simple fault. Does sound like the sensor as all info for speed and mileage must come from it. Will check wiring to sensor and also get some contact cleaner on the plug and socket. Bit of Googling and couple of people reckon it's a mare to get to on top of diff housing, needing a ramp. Don't know if true.

One other thing I noticed is a bit of very subtle hesitancy and jerking in low gears/speeds - bit like fuel starvation. This started same time as speedo quit. Poss the sensor also sends info to ECU to help with fueling, etc to engine. Would make sense as the ECU is poss not getting this info any more.

I was driving down the M4 on Monday on way to Portsmouth to get the ferry to France. Having a little trip for 2 or 3 weeks, just me and the Scudo. Anyway, I was only 28.7 miles from home (I zeroed the trip meter when I left, that's how I know the exact mileage it all went wrong  smile ) when the speedo, odo and trip meter suddenly stopped working.

The speedo needle does nothing, just sits at zero MPH. The odo still displays mileage, but is frozen at the mileage at time of malfunction and doesn't register any more miles. Same with trip meter, stuck at the mileage when it all went wrong.

I'm no expert, so would appreciate any pointers as to what may be wrong. Is it the speedo that's at fault, or whatever sends the info from engine/gearbox to register speed and mileage? How do I tell which is at fault? Thanks for any help.

(Luckily my sat nav has a speed readout, so I know what speed I'm doing while in France as I got a ticket on my December visit. Suppose for the purposes of my trip the sat nav's speed is better as it's in KMH, whereas you can only really see MPH on the van's speedo. So no big problem, but will need fixing when I'm back.)

As bulb technology has moved on a lot, I've often thought that one thing that would make my Scudo easier to drive would be some more powerful, poss LED, reversing bulbs.

Has anyone upgraded their reversing light bulbs? What did you use, which model, type, brand? Is there a big improvement? Recommendations and advice is appreciated.

I thought of these, but I don't know -

Would make a great mini camper. Strangely I'm not seeing so many MK2 later models, it's like they hung on to their MK1s and didn't bother downgrading. No offence to MK2 owners.     wink

As Ken says, they are patriotic. Seen plenty of old French cars, Dyane van and several old, boxy Peugeots inc. a very tidy 604. That's a rare beast now. Wish we still had our car industry and were patriotic.

..........................and there are tons of our MK1 shape vans - early examples and later facelifts. Don't know if this is typical of all of France, or just that as I'm in a rural area (Lot And Garonne dept.) they're just particularly tight around here and hang onto their older vehicles. The vans are everywhere - in UK I can go for days without seeing a single one. Even spotted a long wheel base, only seen pics - but though rare, they do actually exist on The Continent.

Here I see several driving around or parked every time I get in the car. Yes, car unfortunately - The Scud is at home alone. I decided to fly and hire a car, so a Clio it is. Next time the van will come. Must be good for spares here, new and used as some in UK are getting scarce.

So while we've binned most of ours the sensible French are hanging onto them. Although it rains a lot here (no pun), maybe even more than UK, I've not seen any with crusty sills or patches. Encouraging to see so many old MK1s. Vive la France! Vive la difference!

Cleaned off the oil and grime on the sticker on old shock and it says 'Sachs' and 'contains nitrogen'. So a new Sachs gas shock it is, just as the manufacturers intended. Then another one for other side when I get more time.   sad

The correct Sachs OE front shock model nos. are -

Sachs 310 765 for left/nearside

Sachs 310 764 for right/off side

Hope this info helps someone in the future.

Thanks for your reply, Alvy. So you're recommending gas. Would be interested to know what the original shocks would have been. Oil or gas?

Main choices seem to be Monroe oil and Sachs gas. Much the same price. Don't know what the advantages of either is. Unfortunately, not come across any old OEMs yet.

What have others fitted on their vans, and what were your experiences?

EDIT>>>   Reading up on the subject, an article stated that with oil shocks, the shaft will stay in if you push it into the body, but gas shocks will come back out. Does this sound right? Going by my shock, the shaft does come back out on it's own - so more than likely, they're gas shocks.
