too..  "computery" for my liking. basic ECU that only needs 3 sensors to run please. the other sensors are for fine tuning.

when i replaced the timing belt and clutch on mine i spent an extra 300 to 400 quid on renewing things like wishbones, bushes, boots, ALL fluids, complete front struts, the 3 important engine sensors, and some other bits (it already had new brakes front and back or i would have done them too) i also completely rust proofed the underside including extensive cavity rust proofing.. even in the front sub frame!

im now pretty confident that it would take me around the world before needing work doing to it again (bar yearly service or ever 6k miles!).

What were the three important engine sensors out of interest?

My big question has to be my sills, I've put a few patches on. If I commit to replacing the sills I'll keep her.

Thanks for the replies.
Where should I take a feed for the voltmeter? A ignition only live from the steering column??

Hi
Has anyone fitted a battery meter in the cab to monitor their main battery voltage??
If so, any chance of a photo?

It made me appreciate the area, I might never journey down there again.
I'm certainly going to make use of the ferries to see more of the west coast.

Joanna Lumley has a place in D&G?
Used to fancy her, I wonder if she fancies a trip to the Outer Isles with me in the van??

The poor old girl, I'm convinced she will wind up being abandoned deep in a forest on a scottish trip!

Took mine to three garages before I got mine done.  First one didn't want to know.  Second one replaced 1 and said the rest were sized and they couldn't shift them without high risk of snapping.  Wouldn't even have a go when I said I would risk it.

Eventually got them all safely done in a morning by Diesel Dave in Keighley.

I think it's an easy test to check them first if unsure they are failing

This sounds like a plan.
My mate has a garage over in Cheshire, I think I'll get him to do this job.
I'll have a go at testing them in situ, any advice gratefully received.

The old girl starts and runs (a bit lumpy on start up), that'll do for now.

I assume as per controled by ECU

Yes, I had a problem with a relay or something on the main board the other year.

Hi, I got my son to check my OBDII socket after my engine light came on briefly on my Scottish trip.
Here are the codes:

Glow plug out?

After a late start on Monday I drove north and overnight overnighted in a truckers layby south of Longtown.
I set off on my usual route across Dumfries and Galloway with the intention of climbing Corserine in the Galloway Forest. The weather was very poor all the way. Stopped off in Dumfries for a few supplies. I turned into the forest near Gatehouse of Fleet. I spotted a good lying up point, a piece of old road near the Forest Road and Polharrow Burn and made a mental note of it for the future. I decided that the weather was too poor for serious hill walking so decided on a road trip. Stopped off in Dalmellington for a take away, too wet to cook outside.
Overnighted in a car park near Largs.
Crossed on the Gourock to Dunoon ferry, drove up to Loch Goil to spy out a walking route for the future, again it being too wet for the mountains. Saw all the work being done to restore the A-road by the Rest and Be Thankful after a massive landslide. Carried on around to Inverrary and on to the Kintyre peninsula. Stopped off in Ardrishaig for a snooze (I do this a lot on the road!), on to Tarbert, carried on to Campbeltown on the eastern side, a narrow road with passing places. Stopped off at Carradale and Saddell. Had a walk around Campbeltown, another takeaway for tea. Back towards Tarbert and parked on the quayside for the night.
Crossed Tarbert to Portavadie in the morning (eng management light came on coming off the ferry).
Turned north to Otterferry for a walk on the beach then crossed over on a high track to the Bute ferry (4 min crossing).
Drove down to Rothesay, had a wander around the back on a ferry to Wemyss Bay on the ferry to the mainland.
Eng light went off but decided that the weather was a bit rubbish so trucked home via Dumfries.
3 nights out, a fine adventure.
Photos to follow.

Hi,
Anybody replaced their sills at all?
Where did you source them?
Did you completely cut out the old ones or just weld the new ones over the top?
Cheers

A 3 night out trip to celebrate passing our MOT.
Day 1
After a quick check of the oil and water I headed up the M6 and cut across towards Kielder Water, at the far end of the lake there is a Forest Drive (£3 toll) across the moors. Love that sort of thing.
Spent the night in a layby near Otterburn.
Note: In the National Park there are lots of 'No overnight parking' signs.
mini_Screenshot_20200725-110309_Gallery.jpeg

Day 2
Rainy Day
Drove around the lanes nearby then headed towards Morpeth to get a few items of food, then headed up towards Alnwick. Checked out the route to climb The Cheviot near Wooler before spending the night at the Catspaw layby.

Day 3
Early start and climbed The Cheviot before heading over the border at Coldstream and following the Kelso, Jedburgh, Hawick route, diverting off towards Newcastleton. Spending the night near Longtown.

Day 4
Headed south towards home on the M6

Van performed well. Need to attend to the oil leak and a few other minor jobs before another trip.

Always a nervous time of the year, MOT time.
Would rather MOT now to ensure it's safe than use the 6 month extension.

And it's a PASS!!

The sills might not last another one, they've had a good few patches and the oil leak is getting worse...

#91 Re: Maintenance » 2.0 Hdi weeping injector return. » 2020-05-25 15:18:01

Here's an update and a brief 'How to...' guide.
I removed a large engine breather from the rhs of the engine, connecting the rocker cover to air box.
I undid the rail carrying the wires to the injectors and unclipped the connectors, they required the plastic clip prising slightly and they left out of the way.
The injector return pipe is held by small metal clips, I removed these using a small pair of bent long nose pliers, I was extremely careful not to drop each one.
I traced and removed the pipe that leads back to the fuel system.
The replacement part cost £12 off a well known auction site.
Replacement was the exact reverse, I used a small fuel clip to secure the return pipe onto the small spigot.
To ensure the fittings on the injectors were seated  I gently tapped them with a ratchet handle. Replacing the metal clips on the injectors was straightforward but a little fiddly.
I took the opportunity to check over pipes etc whilst I had the bonnet up.

Hi
I've noticed a small amount of diesel near the base of the rocket cover near the injectors, I suspect the return is leaking.
Access looks tricky, I think the scuttle panel needs to come off to get access.
Anybody had experience of dealing with a similar leak problem??

Made out of old table legs and a pieces of road sign frame!
I'll paint them black and get some plastic bungs for the ends.

Its interesting what you said about noise. I think I'll try and make them as low profile as I can.

I'm contemplating building a roof rack or roof bars. I've got a two piece bed frame that would make a good roof rack, I've also got some sections of table leg, box section. Not sure which to build yet.
Can anyone post a photo of the bracket to roof assembly so I could have a look?

#98 Re: General Discussion » Post-Lockdown Freedom Trips » 2020-04-18 11:29:38

I'll do my usual trip to Dumfries and Galloway over a few days. Then I think the usual tour of North and Mid Wales.
Creature of habit me!
I will do a longer journey crossing to Dunoon, overnight by Loch Awe, on to Inveraray (love the bridge there), keep heading up to Ft William and beyond.
I must do the NW500 at some point...
