LED Reverse lights

About a month or so ago I purchased some LED1156 bulbs off eB** ........ I'd got a box of 10 So called super bright LED bulbs previously and although bright I find their No better than ordinary bulbs .............
{I used to go through bulbs like a doze of salts}

In fact LED's can be worse sometimes ...............

Although for me a little dearer than a "Normal bulb" {I've had some good results with a couple torches with a magnifying lens over the LED} I though I'd try them out ................

LED-R-B-V2.jpeg
The result =probably whiter Not brighter

Not wanting to put all my faith in them ...........
As before but on a larger vehicle.............

Decided to fit extra lights...........
The first set I trialled had the Led's stacked in two rows of three but I prefered on this application a Lower profile

When dark they cast a surprising  amount of light..........

I've had these all for quite a while kicking about...........
As i've still got a few of these left I was thinking on fitting some more and setting them up as perimeter lights for van

I used a feed from reverse light as a trigger for 30 amp Relay and a direct feed from battery for lights

Mounted at back using a Tech screw ....... Nothing fancy

Re: LED Reverse lights

Think if my dispatch was anything else rather than a work van i would change them all to LED. I did that on my last Convoy what worked out quite expensive. I am changing them all to LED on this bus but the rear luckily are just two sets of what look like trailer and flatbed truck lights so things just got a lot cheaper

One of my fails in its MOT was the upper left break light. I was taking the opportunity to start changing them but as the unit had an issue i got these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-12V-Rea … 2749.l2649

Doubt i could get four break lights for that price and for my lower set i bought these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PAIR-12V-LED … 2749.l2649

Funny thing. When i fitted the upper ones i was putting in the resistors but decided to test them first and the flash was just as normal as they ever were so must have them built in. Fingers crossed when i fit the lower lights they have them also.

Probably all in my head but as i will be running 330ah leisure batteries my thinking was when the split charger kicks in i am being kinder to my alternator by reducing the draw.

Re: LED Reverse lights

i have swapped all of my rear bulbs over to LED. i went with bulbs from a store on Aliexpress called MAXGTRS. i have been using bulbs from these guys for years and never had to replace one yet.

if you change your indicators out for LED bulbs, make sure you also swap out the indicator relay too as it will cause the LEDs to flash fast with them being low current.
i used this relay from ebay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fix-Flash-Ra … 2749.l2649

the pins are all in the correct place for our van..  not that its hard to swap the wires over in the relay socket if you get another one.  the only thing i dont like about it is that its not a very loud clicking relay.

as we are on the topic of led light upgrades, does anyone know what bulb the high brake light uses on the rear door?

Re: LED Reverse lights

Your Lucky that your van will accept a generic style light all be it if And probably is these days LED's are the cheapest way to go on the market.........
We tended to favour what they called Hamburger rear lights on our own trailers especially the ones we used abroad ..............

When and we did a lot of subcontracting and shipping dead trailers we had to have an array of bulbs and Rubbolite lenses with you, As you had to remove them and supply your own..........................

We didn't buy them all at once as they were about £30 each and we'd try for 3 a side on Unit and Trailer {over time}......................
You can get a pair or if you look hard enough two pairs {cheapo Hamburger} LED'S for less than that now........
Another thing we did was to earth a side light to the positive of the indicator ..............
everything would be and function normal........Till you used indicator ....when it came on the sidelight would go off and flash alternate to indicator.......

Talking indicator bulbs I would buy half dozen of these
IMG_20201130_020508531.jpeg
And start out life like this ..............
IMG_20201130_020628839.jpeg

Then when I got a blown single filament bulb .......
IMG_20201130_023644061.jpeg
Modified to this ----- {This an extra and spare one}

I'd remove bulb from fitting and then solder on a lttle touch of wire to new bulb and re- solder it onto empty casing and being 20w/12V {Halogen} spotlight were  brighter and I'd fit them on mostly the rear indicators of the bike.......... [I believe can get them as LED now]

Being that they have a 35mm? lens mostly wouldn't go in car's or a van's light housing even though obviously fit bulb holder

From memorey - it's a single filament brake, indicator style 1156 bulb and to remove Lens unit is by an 8 or 10mm nut on inside of door

Re: LED Reverse lights

thanks! ill see what i can find LED wise big_smile
next task is the number plate lights. i actually need to look up what they are too. i think i have to take the wooden ply off from the inside of the door to get to them though.
i am one of these people that likes to leave the side lights on when its parked up somewhere.. all good when you stay longer than expected and drain the battery.

Again from memorey the high level bulb is facing side on in fitment ......

Also the number plate bulbs are like the side repeaters and move to the right? to be released ............
So no need to remove inner door panel and it's some thing I already did is change those bulbs.........

They are Capless T10 or 501 bulbs ............
