battery Relay

Has anyone installed a relay if so, any advice on where to take it from (starter motor etc.) and what path to route the wire through to get to the back of the van

Re: battery Relay

If your talking about a leisure battery?

I read some where there was a wire that went to the alternator but never the starter. Ill presume this is what the trigger wire is on this diagram

Re: battery Relay

I'm not very practica, so as the above make perfect sense actually applying that to my van is a different matter - photos of the bit (alternator) I connect the wire too would be ideal!

Re: battery Relay

Where the wire goes to exactly on the alternator i am unsure as not did this yet. I am just getting the kit from ebay that atart around 60 quid and presuming it has a easy to follow fitting guide. This may help you more

Re: battery Relay

Cheers Casper - sorry I haven't got back to you, a friend has said that I can take the wire from the ignition so going to have a go at that today - will let you know how it goes for when you get round to it...

Re: battery Relay

On my 2002 1.9D there is a "engine running" relay, which is fed from the the ECU via F6 (immobiliser fuse).
Used a tap/piggy back fuse holder to feed the split relay. That way you don't have to touch the alternator wire, which may not be happy driving a relay.

Getting wires from the engine bay to the interior is very difficult because its impossible to get a drill anywhere near the bulkhead. However there is a single hole with grommet - follow a straight line roughly from the battery earth terminal, towards the windscreen, all the way back. You will need to poke a hole through the insulation on the other side - I think I used a coat hanger.

Re: battery Relay

Cheers, I took it from the ignition - so it charges with the ignition not the engine, but I'm not too worried, Ill just have to remember to turn it all the way off. And it was really simple to run it totally hidden to the back of the van through the door sill trim.

So now I have electric! Tap and usb chargers

Re: battery Relay

If you are triggering the relay from the ignition then you will be starting the engine with the liesure battery as well as the main battery?

Re: battery Relay

Will probably just blow the fuses between the batterys  when starting.

Re: battery Relay

No it shouldn't damage anything.
I wondered if it might give starting problems if the leisure battery was discharged, but my head started to hurt.

Re: battery Relay

Ha - I have no idea about electricity. would the fuse between the relay and leisure battery positive blow? wont the engine just take from the battery without the fuse?
