Strange noises from injector pump

It is very cold here now, and my poor Dispatch is struggling to start in the morning. As I wait for the glow plugs to get warm, I have noticed a sound coming from the engine. Opened the bonnet and listened... it comes from the pump. Some sort of a rattle noise, following the glowing light. Any idea of what it might be?

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Probably diesel is almost freezing and pump will be struggling. Listen again when the engine has been running a bit longer where everything is warmer.  Are you 100% sure its coming from the pump? as just to the left is your glow plug relay. Mine was starting to melt as it looks like one of the thicker wires came loose and the connection was arcing making it sound like a rattle  and the relay melting at the bolt underneath

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Casper, the noise is coming before starting, when the glow plugs are on. And the sound is definitely coming from the pump.

lift pump pushing very cold fuel through the injector pump maybe? does the 1.9 have a lift pump?

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

I think that the stop solenoid is cycled as the plugs are heated - like a cleaning mechanism.

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Casper, we have down to -30C these days, but as I said, the sound is there before start. Could be a solenoid, though. As for the fuel turning to goop, we have winter-diesel in Norway.

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Casper:.................... I've a funny feeling it's as tee-cee says and as you have described in the past ......"A chatter" .........

You can for uk diesel buy a Winterising additive to lower diesel waxing point but as I've found to my cost in the past with premix winter diesel it can [rarely I'm told] re- act with it and raise the waxing temp [And cancel benefits out]..........
Adding some petrol/benzine (sometimes a choice of Benzine mostly Germany for me) to the diesel can help prevent waxing but it's touted kero is beter at  that ............
Although I only ever used some petrol/benzine after my big freeze up close to E. german border many moons ago .........(got down to -28c that particular time before rescue)

{I'ts one reason when following trucks on  the continent this time of year they smell funny}

In those days it was full fat .... Full sulphur diesel we used and a few years later In town you filled up with City diesel......
Then... it was a rule of thumb approx 10% of fuel was petrol/benzine......... {400L in tank = 40L petrol added]
with the advent of ULSD I've not really got much of a clue what % is rule of thumb is these days...........

(I did have and acquaintance who got a litte over zealous and damaged the pump in his vehicle by adding to much petrol and that inturn cut the lubrication to the pump)

A full on petrol/benzine diesel mix .... For a diesel product can be fairly volatile
{Being milder winter these days.... or was...I just let them add now to make it winter diesel but if I was for heading into -30s I'd add some petrol to the mix probably no more than 5% but that's just me .....[To cover the change in temp beween here and there]....... I dont know how low that would take you.. and if staying in that area just use pump diesel unless I knew better}

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Vaz: sorry but this isn’t helpful. The only thing I want to know is if the ticking sound from the pump is normal or not. Facts remain... the car is hard to start below-15C. And the noise is more destinct below that temperature.

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

I'm inclined to think that Norway has the whole cold thing worked out, surely if the fuel was the problem it'd be a known problem in all diesel vehicles.

Can you feel the ticking sound, to confirm Casper's point of whether the ticking is coming from the pump or the glow plug relay?

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Definitely the pump. And as tee-cee said it could very well be a solenoid ticking in there somewhere. I will try to record the sound sometimes today... even though its not that cold outside today. Only -12C...

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

I can confirm as tee-cee says and as Casper has described in the past that...........

On activating the ignition on a cold engine on the van that it'll have a rattle/chatter but I would not call it loud and I'm unsure if it's temp related...............
As I've only heard/noticed it with bonnet raised and I've been attending to something...............

IIRC it cycles for about 5 or 10 seconds maybe..........
I have never really gave it much thought...............

Sorry................

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Vaz, as long as it is a normal sound, I am good. Still looking for reasons of the intermittent loss of power, so anything that seems out of the ordinary is a subject of suspicion.

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

It sounds like time to pull out each glow plug and test each that they infact are working and heat up quickly............

just put threaded end on positive battery terminal and a hefty piece of wire to body of glowplug and earth to negative of battery............
But Obviously wear some kind of protection for hand holding plug and not at the glowing end...........

Test all 4 incase your down 1 or 2 ............

It's a PITA but neccessary with your temps there tip top

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

Glow plugs are brand new. Put in a nearly new 110AH battery just the other day.

Yes, that's the sound I was getting from the stop solenoid. Stops once the pre-heat light goes out, and you should hear a final click when the solenoid engages

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

I get the exact same sound on mine.
Makes the sound for a shorter length of time though.
Maybe 4-5 seconds.
My glow plugs are only 6 days old and do work fine.

The sound is very familiar to me, I am sure my Berlingo and other DW8 based vans I have owned made the same sound.

Hope this helps, and sorry I can't be more technical.

Re: Strange noises from injector pump

The clicking sound is the fuel advance solenoid turning on and off very quickly. If it doesnt do that, its broken.
