Good morning:)

I’ve just picked up my new Dispatch. I’ve had a C15 for a year or so but the subframe has broken and whilst I was deciding what to do about it I’ve bought the Dispatch. It seems fine, a few niggles with door handles and locks but, touch wood, everything else is fine. I ended up going a bit more modern than I anticipated as I was after the 1.9 non turbo engine that I think is the same as the C15. It’s a 2.0 hdi so hopefully still pretty basic.

Anyway, here it is. I will probably be on here asking questions about locks etc

I also have the hdi.. Love it. Do you know the cam belt history? If not for what it costs i would get it and a water pump done.

Thanks. The PO said his son had done it so no paperwork. I will try and check out when it was done. I will also get a price from the garage just in case.

Is there anything else that needs changing along with cam belt and water pump please? My vw needed tensioners? at the same time.

Hi MC and welcome to the forum. That's an unusual colour Dispatch you have, not seen one before.

Most people would recommend a Gates or Dayco kit when doing the timing belt. Apart from the belt, you get the water pump, tensioner, idler, etc.

While you've got it all apart, check condition of the aux/fan belt and tensioner and replace if necessary when you remove them to get to cam belt.

well if you are taking the cam belt off you can always change the oil seal too.. for what they cost its nice to have them changed.
around 100k miles the rear axle bushes get tired, may want to inspect them. though they cant fail completely by design, they will just start to knock so no real worry.

only other thing is rust.. if you dont have it prevent it by getting it cavity sealed. i also recommend getting it done all inside the subframe too. the strut tops hid rust on my van so i fixed those.

i mean if you want an in detail thing of.. well all rust points just look at my camper thread.. the link is in my signature. the only things not rusty on my van was the sub frame and rear axle.
think i did a pretty good job with it all though.

oh and dont forget to enjoy how economical these things are. as far as vans go.. they are pretty unbelievable. good engines i say...

Certainly are. I recently borrowed a nearly new Kia Proceed petrol car to drive from Bristol to North Shropshire and back. Was surprised how quickly the gauge went down and how much fuel I had to put in. Reckon my Scudo would have done it on a third less.

Most of my mileage is local short runs. I don't bother putting lots of diesel in unless going on a trip. Just chuck the occasional £20 worth in. Lasts me 2 or 3 weeks. Cheap motoring!

The cam belt history was the reason that I bought mine. The vendor allowed me to see the receipt, I rang the garage who confirmed the work that had been done and I was satisfied that I knew what I was getting in to.

(Ironically I've spoken to a taxi driver with an 07 2.0Hdi, his original engine went pop at 400,000 miles. He reckons he'll convert his Mk1 into a camper when he needs a new taxi)

Yes, that's another plus with these vans - engines that do big mileages. However, you need to put some effort into keeping them going - but not a lot. Just keep the cam belts changed on time, plus regular oil and filter changes. Also look after the antifreeze. These are the type of things that there's no way back from if neglected them and they cause problems as a result. Other neglected areas can be rectified without too much trouble and expense - if you see what I mean.

Merlin, this was a bit of fun about MPG, my 2002 2.0hdi is still doing great at 170,000
