I dear say being about diesels for pushing 40 yrs it's like a farmer doesn't smell the sh** any more................
Only time I can say I was ever bothered or could smell diesel fumes strongly was if it was an under chassis pipe and vehicle had been left idling for a good bit......... 
Stacks seamed to cure issue..............

But I guess we are talking about a 4 inch exhaust pipe and Diesel fumes don't rise ...........
As mentioned elsewhere: Diesel engines in winter with Benzine {Petrol} in the tank to me anyway smell funny especially when following them down the road .........

Hi Chris, I'm at Durham too and may be able to help. Just to confirm, is your engine a DW8 or DW8B, mine is the same year as you and its a DW8B
