Recommended Rust Treatments

I have to de-rust and paint a flat bed chassis.  Not rot but surface rust all over.

I was very pleased with the last one I used.  It converted the rust and left it a dark blue/black.  It was claimed to be totally converted and didn't require further painting.  Though I did paint anyway.

Can't remember what it was called though.

Any suggestions or recommendations for any similar products?

Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

Sounds as though you used krust or similar ......

I've  previously used and found both quite good is Lanolin and very smelly and hard to get Fish oil.........{Both of them and bar & chain oil will creep and sort of self heal}
I found the Lanolin much easier to find but both it and fish oil [if you can find it] turned out to be quite expensive and needed doing every or every other year...........
Of late I have tended to use Bar and chain oil for chain saws and coated my bike in it when it was living mostly outside andmostly in winter with just a cover to protect it..........
on ocasion I melted a tube or two of lithium grease {Ordinary use grease} into the bar and chain oil for a thickish mixture that I painted on and spread about with a softish sweeping brush~used on the wooden [exposed] floor of a trailer............slippy at first and took about acouple months exposed outside before slippyness                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     went
{The sams is true of thr bar and chain oil mix Bt much cheaper ....

(My 4x4 Lada is a 93L reg I bought it 9 months before it's first MOT and regularly used it in mucky off road {Pettly wood ~Battle also Paddock wood hop farm Naming a couple} conditions but also regularly sprayed Not WD40  But cheap maintanance oil about it ... At 28 yrs old it's only got a couple small out rigger holes wanting attention and hasn't been used in anger but lived outside for last 10 yrs ... So looks like something worked)...............
{Drivers door and rear hatch door are not in best fettle}.........

Come spring time or when bike was "recommissioned " we'll say for the season it was a right bi*** to get cleaned off.............
I have thined it down for an oldish electric spray gun with diesel......

Anything that can stop moisture especially winter salty stuff away from or reaching the exposed metal will work ......

Old used Engine oil was good if dirty job ....
But now you'd get arrested for it being so un~environmentally friendly

Re: Recommended Rust Treatments

Bought some Dynax for my sills on your earlier recommendation John.  Not sure how effective it is from under my bed in it's box for the last six months though.  wink

I agree vaz, many of the old methods worked well.  When I worked on farms around Paddock Wood, Battle. and Rye, areas,  we used to paint grease on all exposed steel parts of machinery, and leave them out all year to find them still shiny underneath next season.

I do want to paint it after treating the rust though.

Krust does ring a bell.   The stuff I last used really converted the rust to an inky blue coating.  I repainted the van floor after treating it but I also used some on a very rusty garage door runner and didn't paint over it.  The treated area didn't show rust again although the rest of the runner did.

Can't for the life of me remember what it was called though.

Re: Recommended Rust Treatments

Re: Recommended Rust Treatments

Dinitrol RC800/900 s what I've used in the past.  800 is straight up rust killer/converter, 900 is rust converter and primer.
POR15 do something similar.
Hammerite Kurust is another.  Technically you can do the same by painting Hammerite paint on the rust.

I tend to hit with Dinitrol or Kurust first.  Then put a layer of Hammerite (or other metal paint) on top of it.  Then underbody seal or waxoyl or rubberised enamel, depending on what i'm doing.  My Expert will be getting the dinitrol/hammerite/underbody seal, treatment.

If you are spraying, use a mask.  Seen far too many numps spraying without one.  Most of these paints are pretty toxic and dont use 1K or 2K unless you have an air fed mask.
