Windscreen Pillar Trim

Hi All,
Just trying to remove the plastic trim from the pillars both sides of windscreen (2005 Dispatch) to run some cables behind, i have removed the headliner+shelf and also screw at bottom of pillar and also the door seal but doesn't seem to want to come off.
Any tips would be great as i don't want to force it/break it.

Thanks

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

It's hammered on, with plastic "ancors" the way, you'll break the covers, before they'd come off.
Best you can do is to lever gasket side out, push the cables in, get the rubber back on

That's what I did popped off the door rubbers and run wires behind

There's a reasonable amont of room behind the rubber

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

This is something i will need to do at some point.  A new windscreen is a lot, second hand windscreens can generally be had for around £50-100 on ebay.  Unfortunately at some point in the past, a previous owner got a chip and did a bodge job on it.  It will probably pass the MOT with it, but i find it really annoying.  It's at the bottom of the screen in the middle.  At some point I will rip the screen off and put one without any damage in its place.  maybe also have a protective coating put on it.

Do any of you have tinted windows?

I thought they all had at least lightly tinted windows?

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

I was thinking of taking mine down to about a 20% tint.  If mine is tinted, it isnt by much.

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

I would have said the same as O A T but it is very slight.......

I had my Van screen replaced a good couple years ago now.....
On several occasions been refused the [Free?] Repair as left the chip {Bullet hole there to long}.............
The 306 being a prime example.........

The 306 wen through a Spait of replacements ...........
About 3 or 4 in two years ... It was averaging 18 to 20,000 miles a year [Not Monster but a few]

I remember replaceing screen for MOT and setting off to Spain a month later and returning with a chunk out it ........
{MOT'd in begining August 10,000M covered by start October the rest of year to do the other}

It's Changed days now for it on retirement duties at 2 to 3,000M on average a year normally .........
Anyway both the Van and 306 are Bonded glass screens like most modern stuff .........

In the old days I'd had changed it with my section washing line .......
I find one of the hardest parts ... Is getting screen out now in one piece [even with a cheese wire ] ...................
That and getting older ... I'll leave it to someone else .........

I have limo black tint on sides and I think it was 35% visable through light on rear doors ............
Both could probably do with replacing after 6 years of use with scratches etc ... [definitely rear doors].......
Cheap tint turns purple as the sun bleaches out  pigment one of the very reasons its fitted........

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

Can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would want tinted windows in a camper, (or any other vehicle really).

Yet it seems that it's me who is the odd one out.  Avoiding tints was the single most difficult demand to achieve when buying this van, many were so bad that it was like sitting in a cave.

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

In this country it is less relevant.  But when you are driving down a road in the arse end of Spain and its 35C outside and the sun is beating down, that's when you appreciate them the most.  It makes driving so much easier.  The same at night when the HID numps are blasting you in the face, it makes a difference.  Anything more than 20% isn't useful, unless you are a drug dealer or just want the privacy. tongue  For general use, I think 10-20% on the front and front side windows is sweet.  If I get mine done it will be professionally.  Ideally i would like it the same level as my parents C4 Picasso.  It is pretty sweet to drive and the glare is reduced quite a lot.

Of course it's not for everyone.

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

As you suggest, we all have different priorities.

My own is the day to day "liveability" as a camper.  And as I spend an increasing amount of time sat in the van looking out, and less time out doing things, the views are very important.

Must admit, the tint on mine is very light and not too noticable.  But I wouldn't want anything making a bright day dull, or a dull day duller.

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

I suppose that's the difference.  My van will be somewhere I sleep.  Besides that I will spend as little time in it as possible.  obviously in Winter that will change, but i'm not full timing.

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

I actually agree with both of you.......

Although the Van side and rear doors we tinted when it was converted ......
It was  just re tinted right before we got it at Ten years old  [Or so we were told]........

We didin't want a dank dingy Van either and I was amazed At How much light was inside When I was told Limo black ............
Yes its harder to see out at night than it would be without but with no light on and you in the dark its surprisingly easy to see out as long as it's not pitch black outside...................
We don't use any curtain on side windows just a sort of heat reflective roller blinds.............
It does affort Drug dealer type privacy where unless you have some sort of light source behind nobody sees in {Net curtain esk]..............

What I will say is even though the rear doors is a much lighter tint than the sides the dark side tint greatly helps it appear darker............
Also it may have been a lighter tint ... But it doesn't half make it a Bit ** to look out rear windows for reversing especially at night .............
But I tend to look at everything out back on the door mirrors ..............
[Habit gleaned over all those years driving lorries]..........

But did upgrade reversing lights recently as-well as a rear camera ... [Going blind with age]............
[That's my story and I'm sticking to it]..........

Its hard to say just how effective it did when we've had Van down in spannish sunshine ................
Even with the 306  down in Spain, although not dark tinted on back {just factory}..........
Rear doors wore Australian esk Window socks that are meant to protect their kids from the Sun  ... Nobody knew either if windows were cracked open an inch or two [Briliant also at keeping Mossies out] ...........
And the hatch wore a double folded over Net curtain ............
306-Millau.jpeg
Same deal as Van as it turned out, But was done more for privacy and prying eyes at time for stuff in back on view ................

I would say A/C and lots of insulation is more effective................
A/C  allowed me to get sunburnt on my right arm in lorry as I felt it but to late and no sunblock ..........

.........................................................................................................................................................................
I had all the insulation upgraded in the house {Had it built 1990} along with the new boiler and gas central heating a few years ago and it was absolutely fantastic at heat retention through Autumn and winter But when the heat gets in come Summer it can't escape.........
Ive seen it 10 ...15 degrees hotter inside than out [and No heating on] when getting home a say 9pm ....
So insulation it's doing it's job But  as I've said everything is a compromise and No respite for those inside house ... Opening hoppers [little top windows] and the loft door up is not as effective as before .........

Re: Windscreen Pillar Trim

Its one of the pluses of my van I guess.  It came with A/C and it seems to work ok too.  The tint thing for me will probably be revisited at some point.  But for now I have other issues.
