Wont start all of a sudden

Hi,

Van has sat on drive for around 5/6 years. Every month i start it, roll forward and let engine reach temperature. Last weekend i did the usual. Started first turn of the key and after switching off the ignition and leaving it an hour it wont start at all?? Dash lighting up as it should, battery is good, starter motor is doing its thing but the engine isnt firing up. I'm at a loss as where to start. Anyone out there had a similar experience or know what to check? I'm not mechanically minded so i'm pretty clueless with these issue to be honest! This is the first time in 22 years that i've never been able to start the blinking thing lol. Advice would be appreciated guys. Cheers

Yea check if fuel is making it to the engine. Undo the nuts on the top of the injectors, see if fuel spurts out when cranking

Re: Wont start all of a sudden

I'd just do injector 1 (driver side) and see if fuel comes out when cranking, if not its probably the stop solenoid, on my van it's the lucas fuel pump and I had to hack through the sheilding/armour to get to/remove the solenoid, I then replaced that with a £4 ebay one and wired it to the 12v reverse switch feed at the gearbox, which comes on and off with the ignition, it's worked fine since but I did have to crack all the injectors and do quite a bit of turning over till they were all leaking fuel, after which it started no problem and has been fine since.

Note: Doing it my way will disable the immobiliser, but meh, who wants to steal/joyride a slow as hell dispatch anyway? lol.

And cheaper key cutting!

On my old van I had this done, and I had the Timpsons guy tell me with full certainty that I was wrong about not needing a chip in the key  roll

Re: Wont start all of a sudden

Might seem like a silly question, but have you tried priming it?

Yes,i've been priming it with no success. Last weekend i removed the fuel filter and let the van sit for a week. Its now starting to splutter and almost starting!? Fuel blockage, crap in the system? What do we think guys?

Re: Wont start all of a sudden

You say the van has sat for 5/6 years. How old is the vans fuel?

Re: Wont start all of a sudden

Did you use a new filter sealing ring? They are renowned for being crap. If air gets in then you need to sort that issue then prime and if still no joy bleed at the injectors.

Going to be way past it's best, I would drain it and try with fresh fuel.

Re: Wont start all of a sudden

At the very least and assuming it is no more than a quarter full, you could throw 10L of BP Ultimate or similar diesel in it and top off with a good helping of redex.

Re: Wont start all of a sudden

Much quicker to just empty the fuel filter housing and refill with fresh fuel, then re prime with the ignition switched on, this will allow the new fuel to get past the stop solenoid (assuming it is opening) and avoid any airlocks in the fuel pump.
