Hello peeps,
It appears that my 2004 Citroen Dispatch van (111, 702 miles) may have met its match last night.
Over the last four weeks, there was an noise coming from the engine which sounded like the fan was progressively becoming nosier and more rattily. Something finally went and it konked out into a garage forecourt.
Anyway cut a long story short, the RAC came out and reported that the cam belt had gone.
I am unsure if the engines knackered and will need to test by fitting a new timing belt and see if it still works or scrap it.
The van had been modified into a camping van ie insulated, carpeted, leisure battery, internal light.
I know of someone who is looking for a works van and is hands on with mechanical stuff so he might well be interested in taking up the challenge.
So, my question is how much is it worth?
Unknown if the engine is damaged or not. A simple timing belt fix could be a quick fix?
What would be a reasonable asking price in this situation?
Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks

what engine is it? often it can be just more easy to change the whole engine than fix broken cylinder head bits.
does the engine crank? if so thats a sure sign its damaged the top end
sounds like a tensioner pulley let go to be fair. take one of the top bolts out of the cam belt cover and bend it back if the belt is loose its gone.

Notice: I have the tendency to void warranties, blow fuses, cause fires, and other fun stuff.
Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

Hi pal,
1.9L engine.
The engine does not turn over.
The RAC opened the cam belt cover and the belt was loose. He said it was shredded.
I am surprised it went because I had the timing belt and pullies done in Dec 2020.
Getting a new engine would be the way to go but I am reluctant in spending anymore ££ on it. Also I am fed up as other bits started doing my head in ie door handle does not work, locking mechanism shite etc.
I am looking for a new car but unsure on what to get (hybrid, electric etc) with all this low emissions rulings.
Any idea of its value Dragon man?

I suspect the value of yours might be as much affected by the conversion as the base vehicle. Someone might be more likely to consider the work involved in replacing the belt or the engine knowing that the basic conversion is ready to go.
With the demand for campers, it might be worth trying as a camper for repair before stripping to a work van.

Thanks for the advice Oats.
I may have someone who maybe be able to assess and help with the possible damage.
Prices of used cars are a joke! Just been looking and USED 2010 Hybrid cars asking prices are way out there man. Wowsers!!

I always notice people being like "I'm not pouring £1000 into this", and then proceed to go spend £4000+ on a new vehicle that's also not guaranteed to be perfect.
Obviously it all comes down to what it's worth to you. I've spend *way* more on my van than its market value, but it's irreplaceable to me and also saves me the hassle of moving everything across
Cam belt gone is likely new engine territory but if it is a camper, prices for those are insane right now so depending on the conversion I'd say it's financially worth it, if you can be arsed

Cam belt went in my Maxus last year. Binning the van to buy another was madness. I got a shit van with good engine for 500 quid and swapped them over with a mate. Cater for a new clutch kit, service and belt/W.Pump change but..... I was 100% sure the rest of my van is solid so get under yours and check over the sub frame for rot before throwing money at it as if that goes a year later then it would be a money pit.

Thanks for both your inputs.
Niggling things started bothering me about this van but yeah it's what it's worth to me.
One of the strong points of the van when I bought was it's solid body.
But I will check the sub frame over. Cheers for the reminder.

So anyhows... Anyone any ideas on price range I should offer my van with a knackered engine?
112,000 miles, 1.9L, body solid.
Any ideas will give me an idea what to ask for it when I put up an add.
Cheers folks

It's been sound deadened and insulated with Dodo material. Carpeted and lined.
Rear cab LED lighting with a leisure battery.
Cupboards where the rear arches are for minimum storage.
I would put a photo up but struggling to remember how to.
I've put an advert on Gumtree if you can be bothered searching for it.
If you have an idea on a fair price for seller and buyer then give me a shout.
Cheers
