I'm looking to remodel my internal storage at the back left corner of the van and I'm looking at this thinking, how bad would it be to dremel it out? I wonder if it's structural, but it's not there on the driver's side?
I know the fuel tank filler comes through there, is it just there to protect that?

I would have thought its just protection for the filler neck. Me, i would cut it out

So I took everything apart to check on this, and it's very much double skinned, with one of those skins being the barrier to the outside world. It seems to be structured differently in the wheel arch to give room for the filler pipe outside.
There is a small amount of space that could be used by cutting out the inner skin, but I think I'll just leave it and not risk it

I would go with casper that it's protection for the filler pipe etc but just take note that on the other side is the self above the wheel arch and may offer some structural assistance other than a handy spot to sit the other battery like mine is
