Gearbox / diff woes

hi all

2006 expert 1.9hdi .Weird issue with noise from gearbox diff' >loud grumble at certain speeds , notably around 40mph but disappears when steering is turned ie. only in a straight line , not going around corners.
Noise regardless of gear selected or indeed neutral clutch in or out . Im thinking differential gears or bearings and wondered if anyone had had same and also does anyone know if the diff can be unbolted from gearbox whilst in-situ?
