Thanks for the add everyone.
First post.
I've read through the relevant posts on the forum and acted on some of the advice, but thought i'd ask for a bit of info from those more knowledgable.
I have a 2003 1.9d Expert. that i've owned for years. 122000 mls on the clock.
It's been stood for 4 yrs, with very little use, so not serviced. (going to put a service on it this weekend. Oil /coolant etc.)
Now i've started using it again, it's become a little difficult to start in the cold mornings and really noisy when first started, with white smoke. (rattling from timing belt side of engine. Timing belt and water pump replaced at 88000 mls)
Has a new battery and starts first time when hot. But still feels as though there is a fuelling delay.
I've replaced the glow plugs and glow plug feed wire. (the old ones seemed ok, but were very black /sooty) But haven't checked the relay (where and how to check?) I've also put a non return valve in the fuel line after the filter, so no air in the feed, as there was air in the clear pipe.
Thinking maybe faulty or clogged injector due to lack of use. Are the injectors generic accross the DW8 engines, or do they have to be specific for the Expert?
Any advice welcome.
Thanks everyone.

As a user (and abuser), not a mechanic, I'd say it's infamous ERG valve, easily isolated (for test purposes) with couple of locking pliers to test and back to normal, ONLY then I'd dig as deep as injectors rusty... which might as well be, but... hang on there for better mechanically minded lads to see, digest and possibly respond something wiser

From what i gather you can get Bosch and Lucas ones but i will presume you need Lucas. They are the same what was in the LDV Pilots and i am sure i only paid £30 for a new one from this guy https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/400convoy?_t … 3561.l2563

injectors can be replaced in any order, they dont need to be coded to the ecu.
as crazy as it sounds, unplug the ECU and try to start it. if it starts the same it could be a sensor fault. the crank position sensor when they get a little tired can take a while to kick in. you only get it with the DW8s though as well they can run without the ECU plugged in, all be it not well. if it was a HDI, it just would not start. my track record is 4 vans fixed by changing the crank position sensor hehe.
the egr can be unplugged at the vacuum line then the line attached to a conveniently placed stud sticking out the bracket that holds the vacuum solenoid to the bulkhead. its great for testing a sticking valve, only issue is they usually stick open.
also, on the injection pump, work all the levers on it with some wd-40. i had it on a few long standing cars where they all lock up due to not being worked. some injection pumps have a idle lifter on them that work on a wax valve. often get them lock up and soon come to life with a bit of manual working with wd40.
oh its also worth changing the fuel filter too, however if one is blocked it usually starts fine then starts white smoking as its gets fuel starved. yes experience is a great thing.
not really a fix for the starting but its also well worth checking the slack on the throttle cable too. if you can lift the throttle pedal up with your foot, you have slack lol. just pull the cable out of the holder on the pump and move the clip down a few notches. my van was very slack, the throttle pedal was almost on the floor. made a huge difference in acceleration when i adjusted it.
what was we talking about again?

Notice: I have the tendency to void warranties, blow fuses, cause fires, and other fun stuff.
Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

Thanks for the responses everyone.
Iv'e disconected the EGR valve (removed and blocked the pipes) as instructed elswhere on the forum. And also made sure the throttle cable is taught. It accelerates fine and is starting better. Just sounds like a bag of spanners on startup.
Going to give it a service this weekend and see if an oil change makes it any quieter.
As it's been stood for a long time, would an engine flush be any use? Seeing some saying never do one as it can cause damage to older engine seals.
Cheers everyone.

Blah, blah, blah.
Going to start changing injectors PRIOR to given it service
.
After the service, once all done, few times engine gets warm and cold, even the pesky EGR might decide to work just fine, however nothing is guaranteed about injectors being clogged up, most importantly it has fresh diesel fed. Talking of which, adding injector cleaner something like 125ml bottle per 10 l fuel (I think) might cure the problem. And age- diesel loves condensing "grabbing" water from the moisture in the air that means rust, that means even fuel filter not necessarily is going to catch everything. It still has many times longer "shelf life" than petrol, that IE racing petrol goes stale in 6 months.
ANW, not what you are asking. What you are asking, if engine flush oil is going to damage the engine seals? - horse dung!... Except certain different engines and sludge blocking oil intake on certain few petrol turbo engines, if thus has build up up to crazy amounts and wouldn't get dissolved.
Considering the cost of the flush oil, you might be best off change with normal cheap oil, just to run engine hot- cold couple of times, drain it to see what'll come out, before doing final oil change - the same effect. Do it all might get you to the point of taking out of equation injectors or be certain it's worth doing or else, but not before proper service.
On a side note- these DW8 engines and injectors almost unheard of to have seizing or failing, hence I bought it on a very clever mechanic word, opposite to the newer engined vans, that are absolute pain and expense to get them out (change) and actual part price.
In short, do proper service, run it before blaming injectors. My $0.02ct.

Might be worth replacing after all ...

Thanks for the response AlvyLad. The question on the injectors was because i'd seen those ones on Ebay and they seemed cheap, so thought they may be worth getting as spares as it feel like a fuel supply problem. Serviced it not long before i parked it up, so thought the oil would be ok, but checked the filter during the oil change today and it was clogged up. Changed the oil and filter today and it seems a lot quieter.

I'm sure you changed the fuel filter as well? ... and those engines never sound silky smooth, at least not on mine like never!
ANW, keep us posted, whatever you'll be up to now?
