Front sub frame...with very little metal left

As some of you know, my dispatch had the subframe listed on most of its mot history..... even though it only has 36k on the clock.

So the garage I use, I took it in just after I got it for a once over. They said its mint! But that front sub frame and front cross memeber looks like it needs changing really.

The plot thickens. I ordered the parts

Ebay Cross memeber
Ebay Front Subframe
The Ebay sellers webpage

Im not saying they are the best quilty or whatever. But you can call them and I found them to be helpful and friendly.

After I dropped off the Garage I use Autocraft Cardiff

They had nothing but hell with the front subframe, every bolt snapped off. When they got all the bolts out they then relised how bad it really is!

The subframe is like a patchwork of rusty boge, to the point of whoever it was before run out of "soild" subframe to weld to so they welded it directly the chassis  mad

Anyway, it took the garage I use (have done for years) took them alot longer to do the work as they had to make right the mess left from whoever boged it over and over.

I have attached pictures of the mess that was meant to be a subframe

Re: Front sub frame...with very little metal left

Ouch! sounds spendy
Considering the age and 36K mileage on that 1.9d lump,
the bad news is you've probably only got 20 years or 200,000 miles left in it now  big_smile

I had mine poked a while back by my local guy and was relieved when he said it looked pretty good
underneath apart from some possible sill attention needed for the next MOT which isnt too bad I suppose.

Re: Front sub frame...with very little metal left

Yeah the garage I use, are confused on how bad that front sub frame is and the rest of it is like a different van as its "mint" apparently. I had the new sub frame and cross member caked in waxoil and the whole underside of the van. Like you say it wasn't cheap and im doing what I can so I never have to do it again.

When you change the front sub frame for at least the 1.9D there are 2 different sub frames once is pre face lift and one facelift. The main changes are the engine mount and the bolt hole sizes towards to back. So I found when I was talking to above supplier. The front cross memeber is the same for both.

Just need to drive the van more now...

Re: Front sub frame...with very little metal left

I just had a subframe fitted on mine.   measured up all the hole spacing and brackets, etc and all looked good.

Unfortunately the cross member (the bit of the sub frame that the streering rack bolts to) has a slightly different profile to my old one.   The old one dropped a bit in the middle, the replacement I got raised slightly. Only about an inch different overall so it looked like it would still work.
Unfortunately when attempting to refit the rack, the pipes were fouling.  This needed a couple of spacers to make some clearence...Which of course shortened the bite of the fixing bolts into the alloy of the rack...which of course led to the thread stripping!

The saga is still ongoing.

Ouch!

I've had projects like that where you start out all starry eyed, enthusiastic and full of good intentions
and instead of things progressing nicely it starts to turn into a complete arse ache.
Good luck with it.

Re: Front sub frame...with very little metal left

I had one of them jobs. Drive shafts, disks and pads. Was doing well as i got the wheels off no bother big_smile  Disk number one welded itself to the hub so had to use some light force to move it. Ended up using an angle grinder and chisel to get the mid section of the hub. After that every nut and bolt fought me. I would not be surprised is that is the original disks from 2011

- I have the same problem- rusty front suspension sub frame;
My Fiat SCUDO is according to the V5 is year 2005,
So I’m assuming it’s pre-facelift model,
Did you have to obtain the OEM part number of the frame ?
I’ve found one from a company which I think is the right one - do you think it’s the correct one ??

Re: Front sub frame...with very little metal left

Wouldn't a 2005 be post face lift like this one?

This is a pre face lift
