Only 2 Gears

Hoping someone can shed some light on this one for me....recently changed my 53 plate expert for a 58 plate L2 H2 1.6HDI, anyways all was well in the world until I heard a clink from under the van whilst driving along. After that I was unable to select any gear other than 3rd and 4th.

Any ideas most welcome?

I'm going to make some assumptions that the 2nd gen van uses a similar cable gear change as the 1st gen vans.......

It sounds to me that the clink you heard was the pin/connector that secures the cable the the gear box that controls the movement across the gate (i.e. side to side) coming adrift.....

From that  I also assume that wherever you position the gear lever you only ever get 3rd or 4th, As the box naturally sits in the middle of the gate and the selector cable which is still attached only pushes/pulls back and forth

With luck it might be one of those ball and socket attachments and it might just pop back on
but also if it's worn could just as easily pop back of when some pressure is applied

Hope this thought makes some sense

Re: Only 2 Gears

On my 2002, the main link popped out half way up a mountain in Spain - no gears at all. The socket on the link was made of plastic, which disintegrated. Even with the plastic bit missing the link could be tied back down with a tie wrap. The main problem was getting to the the link - I'd say it's impossible without getting it up on a ramp.
Incidently the new link design was slightly different, with a metal rather than a plastic socket.

Re: Only 2 Gears

Hi Vaz212,  you're spot on there. Had my mechanic have a look at it with his little camera probe and we could see that the pin had come out. However, he put a temporary pin in place and this did nothing so the box is going to be coming out as think it's the part in the gear box that has been broken too ?.

Re: Only 2 Gears

Issue now sorted. .......found that the pin in the selector spindle had come out, so the spindle doped down which meant I couldn't select any gear other than 3rd and 4th gear. Ended up removing the gearbox completely to resolve the situation.

On the downside, found out that the box had previously been over hauled and not very well by the nasty sounds coming from the box and all the crazy paving effect over the housing. So now on the search for a replacement box, local dealer wants £3500 for a new box ?

Sorry If my déjà vu brought bad JUJU and £3500 quote from dealer also sounds par for the course ......spindle dropping (been there  mad )
On a search here's as good a place as any to start

https://www.1stchoice.co.uk/

This is one of those let it develop thoughts that can be dangerous......

Our diesel 306  Peugeot acquired a odd on occasion whine in either 2nd or 3rd or 4th when in town..... after I discovered this my partner (her car) then announced it's been doing that for at least a couple of months
I got it to garage ASAP to find box was dry of oil...... 2 L 75w80 oil and a tube of Molyslip hopefully to keep it going in mean time the Hunt was on for another box

That was at 130,000mls....... Almost 6yrs, 4 trips to Spain and 80,000mls or so later the box is still sweet with No apparent issues (oil level checked much more tho)
We was lucky and it could easily have bit us in the a*se.......

Any box that I'd found locally that showed promise was from a petrol and after a month the hunt started to ease as it was still behaving

Just a thought

Re: Only 2 Gears

As luck would have it, I've found a used gearbox exact match for the one that's in that has done 54k for £300 so got that coming for my mechanic to look at to see if it's better than the one that's in there currently.

Just didn't want to run the risk of it going pop on me as use it for work. Dealer wanted £1700 for a reconditioned box as well.

I've not added anything to the gearbox other than the recommended oil. Is it worth putting something in like the moly slip you mentioned vaz?

I haven't experienced it doing any harm and I've put it in quite a few boxes and diffs over the years...... It's a graphite based/type additive I believe and It does make even fresh oil look mankie....
A big problem, If that's what it is..... Diffs and gear boxes never really get checked or looked at until something goes up ***t creek... So the more fighting chance I can give it the better...... IMHO

Re: Only 2 Gears

Update, had to fit the replacement gearbox sooner than I'd planned as the original 1 got stuck in 3rd gear and if I tried to select another gear it would seize solid!!!

Anyway, replacement gearbox was put in and works great. Only downside now is we then found out the selector at the bottom of the gearstick is seriously worn which means it's very difficult to select 1st and 2nd gears. So new 1 ordered from the dealer at £135, and hopefully that w I'll sort it out.

Re: Only 2 Gears

Update- having fitted the new selector it appears that the cables also need replacing. So spoke to dealer who wanted £185 for replace mentioned cables. Found a supplier on ebay who sells them at £95. So will fit them when they arrive and hopefully that cures the issue.
