Yea I don't think I have these vacuum hoses on mine. Mine's a DW8 rather than the DW8B. Your 306 has the black rather than green EGR block.

Well, think yourselves lucky if you have no EGR throttle valve as it's the one that causes most of the trouble and you have one less pipe to blank off

Thanks Griffin for you great advice
I'd been getting a misfire it was fine starting up and for the first few minutes of driving but then it would begin stuttering when lightly touching the accelerator. When pushed accelerator hard or accelerating away it was fine .
I disconnected the EGR valve as you described and it now runs perfectly so problem solved .
One question will leaving the EGR disconnected cause an MOT fail when they test the emissions
Thanks again

The EGR is designed to reduce NOx emissions, which are not tested.

Yeah, providing your orange light doesn't come on on the dashboard you will be fine. Some people block the pipes up and then put them back in place for the test, just to be on the safe side but it isn't really necessary and provided you don't just leave the pipes hanging loose, you should be fine.

Thanks for your reply that's great I've disguised the two pipes so they look like they are attached no orange engine light on so job done
Van running perfectly once again thanks all for you advice

OK i have made a boob here. I am wanting to put the pipes back but. These two i have two long ones running behind the fuel filter and the one that goes under the EGR is not long enough to reach. Can someone tell me where the pipes should go. Here at the left of expansion bottle and the two under the EGR
Cheers

What a great thread!
My 2004 Dispatch was puffing plumes of smoke and chugging at low revs. A few blokes hoses later there’s no smoke in site and a notable improvement in the drive!
Thanks!!

Hi. I have same problem. Smokey. Jumpy, stuttery at idle. I followed the instructions to disconnect the vacuum pipes. Am I right in thinking I have to block off both the pipes coming Down from the solenoid as in the photos. The shorter pipe I have found underneath the egr has snapped of or melted off with the plastic piece that you push it on to still inside the pipe. Now I don't know where it is meant to attach as I can't see underneath. Obviously there will be a hole there underneath the egr. Will that hole cause the smoking as I have blocked off the upper part of both rubber pipes at the soleniod and the van is still smoking. Have put a grub screw in each at the solenoid. Is that correct. There is an oily substance in the large air pipe coming out of the egr. Is it a case I have to take the egr off and seal the hole where it has broken off????.

I
OK. I think I blocked off the wrong pipe.
The left one of the two from solenoid is correct..... I think (as the other end is broken off from somewhere... I presume the egr assembly). Second pipe to block off runs from bottom left of egr valve to another location as i the photo above. It is the one with the yellow x. Is it OK to block it off above there where it terminals????

they are both fuel lines. cant see any vacuum pipes in that picture.

Hi,
Hope you all well! I tried this fix today but couldn't work out which is the second tube to block, Ive blocked the left one coming out of the solenoid valve at the top of the photo.
But wasn't sure which was the other tube, from the description it sounded like the same tube that I have already blocked that goes to the solenoid? Or is just the other one on the right that comes from the solenoid!? Or is it the fabric looking one that goes from the green part on the ERG assembly to the central bottom bit of it? Ive tried to get a photo but was struggling!
Any help would be muchly appreciated!
Cheers,
Yan

Fascinating thread. Is this something worth doing on the 2000 HDi/Jtd too? Or does it set off the warning light?

Hi all,
Sorry I haven't looked at this thread for a while.
The two pipes are easy to find, they are flexible rubber which may be covered by fabric. one goes into the EGR throttle on the right hand side of the EGR valve housing, just beside the intake, to the left of the dipstick. The other one goes onto the lower left side of the EGR body.
Just to clarify though, It isn't the act of blocking the pipes that fixes the problem with the EGR valve, just pulling the rubber pipes off the EGR valve and the EGR throttle should solve any issues. Blocking the pipes is just a safety precaution to prevent the ingress of foreign bodies into the vacuum pump, which may or may not cause problems in the future. There is no need to block up the hard plastic pipes that the rubber pipes were connected to as they are already blocked by a rubber diaphragm which operates the mechanism inside the valve and throttle.
I can't say whether removing the vacuum pipes from any other EGR valves on any other diesel engines would work or not. Mine is the DW8B engine, which I think is the only one with an EGR throttle and this is the device that causes the main problem. If you have a problem with an EGR valve that is activated by a vacuum pipe on any engine, removing the pipe may or may not improve the problem.
Whilst removing the pipe should not cause any issues, on some more recent engines it may well cause an engine management light to illuminate, which would in most cases be an MoT failure, although it should go out without the aid of a fault reader when the pipe is replaced.
Cheers, Griff.

Thanks guys for getting in to it, but I'm having different issues.
(mechanic, I've used, turns out to be clueless backward git)
unnecessarily long winded one- sorry!
Had my van few years now (1.9d (non turbo) 2004)- it's rubbish, but sort of reliable rubbish and I can't afford better one at the mo.
couple of times now, had pants full when breaking hard, releasing and trying to break again ended with almost no breaks.... got to the git- changed pads twice, calliper pins once- the same... he goes you need new discs to start with....
got to the next mechanic- "you got to change servo, as it fails on a second pump"... OK, I thinks, but why on a second pump?
back to my git of my mechanic with all the findings- "it's not the servo, it's the vacuum pump", that fails to provide enough of suction for a servo...
taken me lot of effort to locate one, buy it, wait again to get to the git to change it- done!- yeahaaaaNAAAHHHH!- the same...
(nothing is free, mind you)
got to the second mechanic- this is so, and so- all the same... he goes- you got leak, an hour or so pulling one thing to the other driving up the hill and down no less than 10 times- vuolia!- got my breaks!!!!
Offline
the, small Mole-Grips holding the pipe, that normally would go in to bottom one of the hoses
or a top one as on this "reversed! pic
me almost happy, thinks of good way to plug the hose, but van is sounding bit rough, doesn't like mid revs
It'd the ERG they both say, great, but my regular git- I'm not fancying going back to ever, second mechanic is busy up to his eyballs, will take couple of weeks to have it replaced... he checks few bits on computer and goes- "yeah- that'll be £300 mark range thing or better find yourself SH or something and even better find SH and change it ownself"
Offline
cont.
(couple of days of searching, researching- I'm here)
to change it myself?- being both left handed- not happening (+ the horrid clips, that require special tools), but most importantly they are rather dear, near impossible to get hold off SH AND, is it absolutely the EGR gents?
Can they be interchanged with other makes like?
Thus is clearly Bosch 180304 09-2
replacing with something like https://www.autodoc.co.uk/dri/10163215
as Bosch- so far nowhere to be found, apart from one place at £249.... making second mechanics quote to replace it at £360 sounding almost reasonable
saying reasonable, when van is only worth £500 ATM...
any ideas/suggestions gents- shoot!
Thanks!

what's the difference between grey / blue / black / green capped EGR's? if they look identical, they all are fitted to identical 1.9D engines?
Offline
I know my 1999 DW8 had a black one, and it didn't have the vacuum pipes I've seen on the later DW8B engines.
I think the later DW8B engines have the green ones

The reason I am asking, I suspect, it might have been fitted (replaced) with whatever was available, not necessarily what it should have.... Or there are good used alternatives, that I could get
Any ideas gents?

My 2006 DW8B 1.9D has a green cap fitted, it's currently blocked off and the engine is running sweet. Have you considered blocking it off?

Cheers for that, although, I've seen them in green caps not just Bosch, but other makers now. Is yours Bosch? You could definitely see from the top, the ®™ on LHS, underneath the part number.
(Clamping), It effectively is isolated already, I mean the vaccum hose is clamped off with mole-grips (and I have brakes), however valve is opening half way or closing half way only as when revved up high it's OK, so is on tick over, however when picking up revs (and slowing down) at low'ish revs it judders splutters etc.
If not them nastly clips, I'd give it a shot in taking it off, apart and cleaning it to see, but ...
Still wander what difference do different colour caps make? I mean I've seen them on cars/vans that are euro2 or euro3 class cars, but the same capacity engines. Also, those "alternative" makes starting from Pirtburg to Lucas etc, try to enter reg- either fit or don't meaning there's some sort of a difference, but so far I can't work out what function exactly.
