A few challlenges to getting back to the van!

So I've come back from my three month break and have been looking forward to getting back to living the van life. It seems the van is having other ideas!

I came back to find the inside had become *very* damp as a result of the leaks I already knew it had. That I could live with. What wasn't as I'd expected was the amount of mould that had built up on everything that gets a lot of touching - steering wheel, gear stick, seat belts. Not nice at all.

A full valet later and it's much nicer inside. Actually it's beautifully shiny inside. £80 well spent.

Great, off I go!

Drove it away from there and noticed something strange. It kinda tried to accelerate without me touching the pedal. I had noticed a lot of blue smoke from the exhaust earlier that day and remembered when my brother had this on an old Ford Galaxy. Turbo leaking oil into the air intake leading to an engine runaway.

Fortunately I knew to throw it in 5th, lift the clutch and stall the engine. Got it to a layby and tried again. It idled fine, but as soon as I press the accelerator, the revs go through the roof. So yep, looks like turbo failure.

Booked in at the garage tomorrow to see about getting a new turbo fitted.

Hoping to have it fixed by the weekend so I can get out and about!

Good to hear you are back with us, sorry to hear about your van.  Is it going to DD's?
Let me know if you need a lift or need anything picking up.
Well done stopping the runaway!

It really is. I'll post updates as they develop.

Yep, I figured with it being a reasonably big job I'd go to the old trusty Diesel Dave's. I was very pleased I knew about runaways - managed to save the engine.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind!

Re: A few challlenges to getting back to the van!

It's in with the garage now, they have the turbo off and it's been sent off to be reconditioned.

Looking at £500-600 unfortunately, and it's gonna be early next week before it's ready.

Hopefully at some point I can be back on the road!

Think my reconditioned turbo was £530 [including labour] so that sounds about right. Fingers crossed you're on the road v soon!

Re: A few challlenges to getting back to the van!

And I'm back!

£550, lots of complaints from the mechanic about how much of a bitch everything was to work on and a delay which I suspect was them de-prioritising my van for a couple of days as it sat i the yard.

But it's back, and I'm home again! It runs beautifully, all my turbo woes are solved and it's a bit less smokey. Very pleased to have it back.

Re: A few challlenges to getting back to the van!

No too bad realy Ken.  It seems mechanics always complain about how difficult almost every job is these days.  And I doubt you would have got it done for any less.

Just get yourself some lighter boots and it should do you well for a while now.  wink

Let me know if you are around my way and I will come and visit.

Re: A few challlenges to getting back to the van!

Yea the price is exactly where I expected it to be, and in fairness probably lower than it could have been. All part of the lifestyle I guess, and I squeezed in a train trip to Germany while I waited so all good in the end.

I'm happy to arrange to be up N Yorks way so sure I'll let you know when I fancy a trip up there
