Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

I like the idea of a black roof rack - but I have said to myself that I'm staying purely utilitarian and trying to make that the aesthetic - as it's a deeply uncool van the only way I can make it cool is not to try and improve its appearance! I was wondering about what wheels are available or if I can get one of those cool external "cap peak" sunvisors. if I could get bull bars that'd be about the most I'd go...

Yep - seen them both - visor is way too much money and don't like that style bull-bar!

Also I'm not after gash exactly!

If the bars are your style im sure you could get ones from a range rover or the likes to fit. Im sure getting mounts fabricated up would not be that expensive. When is t you are going away, Italy did you say?

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

I was going to go to the Dam but i have the dog this year and unsure about taking her into the town with us so giving it a miss. If you are staying for a night or two they have a camp sight but its a tram/taxi ride North East of the city

https://www.campingzeeburg.nl/

When leaving Italy i presume you are going along the coast heading for Monaco. On the italian side you have a coast road or motorway that runs along the coast. If you have time i recomend the coast road going through the towns, the SS1

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

Awsome - thanks!

Were staying in a hotel in Amsterdam leaving Van at a park and ride...

but love the coast road idea - I'm going to try to avoid motorways the whole way round.

I have found sites like

campinmygarden
campr
gamping

like air bnb for peoples gardens and drives!

Any other suggestions welcome!

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

A lot depends on what route you are taking. Me i would head south in Holland down the A2 heading for the mossel valley (avoid Trier) and that should take you up to late afternoon and get a campsite. Next day head down the Black forest. Anywhere from Lorrach east to Lake Konstaze (Bodensee) and that should do you for long drives for a few days. Here you can go into Switzerland or Further ear over Germany and pop into and over Austria. Switzerland and Austria charge for motorways and its a sticker for your windscreen you buy before you drive. Most garages sell them for Switzerland and its one price that last for a year so kind of a rip off. Unsure price and Austria i think you can get 10 day tickets. The charging came in after i had been.

Looking for a camp site or wherever to kip for the night? Pop in your destination and hit the target in the middle of the map

http://www.searchforsites.co.uk/

I work out an average for every hour you drive you travel 50 miles. Slightly more when on motorways obviously but remember if working out time to get from A to B. When in some of Switzerland, Austria and North Italy you could spend an hour driving and cover just 30 miles. You are up and down and twisting around if you are intending on taking in some of the mountain passes. As far as i know Italy motorways are still free. I know you say you don’t want to use them but you will need to some days. When in France you can work out your tolls

http://www.autoroutes.fr/index.htm?lang=en

Just stick in your location and destination.
Its roughly 350 miles from Italian coast to Spanish. Fill up with Diesel and any foods you may need, as you can imagine the south of France is dam expensive more so round Monaco, Cannes. I have never looked into it but Aie campsites are meant to be cheaper and you can download POI’s for them for your sat nav

http://www.europebycamper.com/2013/12/2 … psite.html

You may need to convert the download to whatever your sat nav takes. Mine is KML files. One more thing. If you don’t know about it you get software so you can plot a route on your computer and send it to your sat nav
Tyre the free one obviously

http://www.tyretotravel.com/download-tyre/

and if you have Garmin you can get Basecamp for that.

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

Most of Euro land its illegal to wild camp. Tent or van. Do it in Switzerland and lite a fire will get you anything up to €10,000 fine. Some places you cant even drive your motor off the road and onto the grass. Just work your map/trip round campsites. I would book a hotel every 4 or 5 days just to get a good bed and shower also reduce the risk of cabin fever as if you end up murdering your wife for telling to to turn left when it should have been right for the 10th time you know they will catch up with you.  big_smile  big_smile

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

Ha - you've guessed our plan!

I'm not that interested in foreign wild camping as I wouldn't know the rules or if someone breaks in etc... maybe once I'm there and speak to a few people I'll decide to.

Hotels are a must but we need cheap ones! and good sites? I was thinking of hostels with private rooms.

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

I use booking.com for deals. Had some cracking deals in spa hotels mixing it with the toffs at a fraction of the price

http://www.booking.com/

Where are you crossing? If coming up to Newcastle eat before you get on the boat and take a snack and some beer on with you. We used to book meals but DFDS is starting to take the piss with onboard prices. The have the cheek to have tip jars on the bar.

Had a quick read through today's posts and I to would like one of those sun visors but way pricey

not the bull bar or side bars (Gash)................ think that looks way uncool
You may not think your van cool but it'll do the job admirably.... way better than looking cool and doing a sh** job in my book an hey you built it yourself..... that's cool and commendable !

Caspers right no "wild camping in Europe" but lots and lots  people do,....... but your right best  find  out the script first
those links Casper posted are well handy............. you taking a laptop with you..... we have a little notebook we carry and use the likes of McD's for free wifi

That's a belter of a roof rack................. you could get one of the cheapish tarpaulins with the eyelets already on them and get a couple of oversized tent poles and guy ropes .....for a good sized sunshade hung off roof rack

Sounds like your in for a great trip.......... I'm jealous.............

We very rarely use the peage in France and never if we can get away with it ..........or Spain but do use the Auto via.(free M-Way)......Not Auto Pista

Top of Spain .... Asturias? ............. is nice for touring or you heading for Costa Brava (Med)  area

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sun-Visor-for … SwmrlUxiDR

Think i will be fine as i had to take the sun visor off to see forward and up hill. The swivel has taken my seat to high.  big_smile

Cheers!

Great tip on mcd's etc.. We have phones and an Ipad - I'm on 3 which does free data in some European countries I think...?

I have a tarp - A heavy khaki waxed cotton one (10 x 6 ft)+ adjustable poles, and if you look closely at the picture above you'll see the d-shackles I use to attach it to the rack. not had it on properly but a few test runs seem to prove that it works in theory.

Spain is kinda an optional extra so haven't thought much. we did think that having San Sebastian as an aim would be a good idea as we both like good food (although I expect we'll find plenty of that anyway!)

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

Personally I would skip Italy - campsites get very crowded in July & August. The Italians tend to very loud and seem to lack the notion of personal space found elsewhere. Fuel is probably the most expsensive in Europe, and they charge for the motorways, with 50km speeds on the surrounding roads.

If you do go though Austria, bear in mind that the there are a few other roads that charge on top of the vignette http://www.tolls.eu/austria

I assume that you have the 1.9D 70hp engine also - be careful on the motorways, some of the contenental truckers are very unforgiving if they think that you are slowing them down. Also the German autobahn sliproads can be very short - and the Germans won't slow down to let you in.

Three will cover France, Italy and Spain, but speed can be variable. This year I've been using TescoMobile - £15 for 4GB data and 270 mins calls for 1 month. Speeds are great and coverage is for the whole of the EU.

Obviously campsites will get more crowded in summer, but its mainly familes - so we try to avoid the sites with pools & extras. The less stars the better - and it will be cheaper. Sites on a lake (especially Germany) or by the coast will be expensive and crowded.
You will have a great time - oh if you haven't done so already, before leaving get a few days away fully kitted up. It's surprising what turns up in the wash.

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

I fired of an email to my first campsite for the end of September. 1 van with awning, Two adults, 1 dog, shower and electric = €17  big_smile

Tee_cee are you talking all over Italy as i found everyone i met to be nice and helpful up the north. I stayed up at Cortina and Arabba area. Saying that they would be used to tourists all year round with the ski resorts and summer bikers and campers.

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

Casper, I've only been to the north in the van - Dolomites, Lakes, Verona, Venice & Trieste.
As you say the people are friendly and willing to help - it's just that in the middle of summer the campsites get jam packed and noisy - not our thing. We had some friends spend a few weeks on the Croatian coast and it was the same there.

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

I should have quoted you tee_cee. I was on about this

The Italians tend to very loud and seem to lack the notion of personal space found elsewhere

When did the motorway charging start? Its been a while since i was down that way but if they had tolls then i never stopped to pay yikes

Sorry I meant the in the campsites rather than the population.
I don't know when they started charging but its pretty much unavoidable as opposed to France

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

TBH changing does not bother me unless in Switzerland. Never bought the sticker last time i passed through as it seemed a scam to me.
Tickets should be charged by the month not a year. I dare say things are all electronic now but you had to attract the attention of the police to get caught and i was on a motorbike so slightly harder to spot.

Re: Peugeot Expert WAV Conversion

I agree with Tee-Cee  as soon as you enter Italy they'll find away to charge you  immediately and fuel is easily on a par with the most expensive in UK.....
I wouldn't avoid Italy just be prepared ..... Been a long time since i was there,  Don't think I'll be back soon
(Was married to an Italian for near 20yrs).......... but never say never.....................
