Starter ?

Hi all. Just wondering on your thoughts but my van had a starter put in back in March 2020. Then never got to use my van due to Covid times and last month it had starting issues again and another starter put in.  Now tonight i was going out and the van never turned over again. All lights came on but nowt. Starter again or just a faulty one been put in ?

If its not the starter then the next suspect would be the stop solenoid.

Re: Starter ?

Stop solenoid wouldn't prevent the engine turning over would it? I thought it just stops the fuel pump injecting fuel

Re: Starter ?

Checked battery voltage for a start? then if thats OK as said, check stop solenoid and/or put van in 1st gear and rock it back and forth a bit till you hear it trying to move things... umm, if it starts on a roll/bump and nowt from the starter then its gonna be starter and/or the solenid, probably... but it is french, wiring is an issue lol.

Re: Starter ?

Just took battery out to charge and tested with volt meter tester and it shows 15.
It did take a couple tries to get the meter to show as it kept showing just the number 1. Im going to change negative earth cable tomorrow which i take it is just the short cable going  off the battery to left front wing  short cable really.  If still dont start tomorrow i guess Solenoid next option but i will ring the garage on Tuesday that done the starter last month.

Re: Starter ?

15? Seems high. Should be ~12.6 with the engine off, ~14.4 with the engine running.

Is your multimeter on the 20V DC setting?

Re: Starter ?

If it is 15v, its probably the wrong battery for the car.  Some batteries do idle that high, but they aren't for cars, they are mostly deep cycle energy storage batteries.

10.9 is low - give that battery a charge. After just replacing the starter motor myself after it just randomly failed, I feel your pain.

You can try hotwiring the starter directly by jumping the 12V permanent feed (screw thread on the top of the starter as you look down) with the ignition feed (the little bolt/thread at the side).

Just don't connect the one that has the little 2inch patch lead wired to the casing of the starter motor - thats the earth. If the starter throws, or better, starts the engine, then you know that there's a wiring problem from the ignition and the starter is fine. In my case wheb doing this, the motor didn't even click any more? - new one on and she's good as new ?

My screwfix meter was doing the same recently, I think I  maybe got 5 years of abusing it, so yeah I had similar when testing my battery etc and it turned out alternator was gubbed, I've just chucked a used 2.0 HDI one in it along with a new ish batter from a Vito, it's working fine so far! smile

Run with it~~ .........
All experiences are good it's what you do with it or learn from it counts...........
personally ....... my experience of French is most of us feel [Never mind The Auld Alliance] a Marmite sensation of love or hate.............
I could say something similar of arrogant efficient Germany ... Where you need to bounce in and fire a rake of F***s at them and low and behold your one of them............

A personal opinion is fantastic ... Because if it's not yours it's wrong
