Not having fun with this welding, oh for some good metal lol, keep blowing holes in it then need to plug, regardless of settings lol, still it'll live on for another year with some corrado/mk4 golf wings repurposed! :-P

I welded my last Convoy up with the side of a washing machine. Some filing cabinet and a computer case. If that is a gasless i found getting a better earth clamp end made for a better sparking end  big_smile  Your earth looks weak and on dirty steel

Yeah that doesn't look fun.  Are you running a MIG or Arc?  I have only marginal skill, enough to get by.  Have you tried moving a little quicker.  I found that if you move the rod to slowly it tends to punch through thin steel pretty quickly.  But i'm no expert. obviously.  I do wish you luck with it.

Oh and FTR, I use a gasless Clarke welder.

Ha. Same shite different paint job

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164643067873 … S3oT6h4w71

That got my convoy a pass and my wifes Fiat so they do work. I find having it on high and moving faster helps. Stick to the 0.8mm flux wire and as said. Good earth.

Re: Not having fun with this welding, oh for some good metal lol.

I can't weld to save my life  and have a gasless mig [can only go as far as my pocket is deep now I'm commited] but they recon and I've tried it.................
It does seem easier to get better weld depth using a smaller guage wire with gas and lower amps to get a weld and heat into it before blowing a hole.............
And consensus of opinion that earth and clean metal equals a much better weld I'll very much agree on ...........

Also I know it takes ages but what about loads of joined up tack welds instead of a continuous weld bead plus all clean metal etc ...............
Should keep heat down if you do alternate areas or an old damp cloot to draw heat out after each weld  and before next weld [air even from compressor if you have one] ...................
