Howdy!
Im 34, live in Newark, Iv had my driving licence for 17 years and I have never taken a car to a garage. I just bought me a Peugeot expert... Found this site via JohnDragonMans youtube and after reading Ricko's comment “It's my 'bug out' vehicle for zombie apocalypse, civil disorder, alien invasion etc”
I reckon this is the place to be
Found the van on ebay for £350 the bloke was honest with the problems. I didn't do any research and snapped it up. Bit disappointed to find its an earlier generation of the 2.0 hdi that my 407 has.
I was thinking I already had a donor car full of compatible parts. But I'm also pleased to see it doesn't have a dpf and you don't need a laptop to fix EVERYTHING.
I haven't had a good look at it yet
The bloke I bought it off was a shirt, shoes and tie type so I wouldn't Imagen he'd had much time under the bonnet. In his listing he said 4th gear grinds in, its slow going up hills, the engine management light sometimes comes on, 3 of the doors are knackered and the water level light is on but he's put water in there. (I saw that as a red flag so I took fluids with me). Threw the money at him and drove into the first lay-bye.
It took 3 litres of coolant and the filler bottle looks nasty.. there's all kinds of floaters in there but no sign of head gasket problems. Rad warning light went out. Level was lower when I got back but I havnt found a leak yet so im hoping its just air pockets leaving the system
Oil cap was clean but nothing on the dipstick. it took 1.6 litres of oil
gotta be a good engine if it can survive that -.-
was hoping that 4th gear grind was just the gear linkage but after driving it I reckon its a syncro ring
On the 55mile journey home suspension, brakes, steering all seemed fine but was beginning to wonder if it didn't have a turbo coz it was slow as muck and I couldn't feel it. But it kicked in! for like 2 seconds just one time. And that put a smile on my face coz now I know its there and its not completely knackered.
Mileage display dosnt work but last mot says 210k (that dosnt worry me
I had a 406sw with 530k miles on it and that only went to the scrap yard coz the dpf was deleted with a strait pipe (new mot rules)
I bought this mainly to use as a portable tool box that I can use around my yard and keep my trailer locked to it. But I also like the idea of a stealth camper project... anything I make to go in there has to be removable tho so it can still be used as a van.

I think these vans have a tendency towards gearbox issues. Mine has loose gear selector problems and reverse plus first to third don't stay in fully. I have read a couple of threads on the net of people with similar problems. Will probably need to rebuild mine at some point and put a new clutch in.
Funny about your coolant as well. Mine doesn't leak, but it is not at all clear either. I honestly don't think its ever been changed. It's an orange, milky looking fluid that needs to be dropped at some point and replaced. But it still works ok.
I did a basic service on mine after I got it and I don't think the oil had been done in a bloody long time. Had to get a piece of scaff on the strap wrench to get the filter off and a breaker bar to get the sump plug off. But the engine seems pretty bulletproof so far. Bodywork wasn't bad either. One weird thing I noticed on mine was after putting the correct amount of oil in the engine the dipstick still showed minimum level. It wasn't until I got to about 5.2L that it hit the halfway point. Although I think there is an engine variant that does take 5.5L, but thought it was the 16v.
I had a turbo issue as well, turned out to be a massive split in the intercooler hose. Also the pipe running from wastegate solenoid had sheared off. Might be worth checking over the hoses if you have intermittent turbo issues.
Beyond that, half a bottle of Redex fixed a lot of problems. Like the guy you got yours from, the one I bought mine from didn't seem to have much of a clue. But everything is fixable with time and money.

Sup pathfinder
Whelp the beauty of this is.... it isn't my main vehicle. so I get to enjoy putting it right at my leisure rather than running around in crisis mode tying to get back on the road.
Half a bottle of redex went in at that lay-bye
I bought a go pro type camera with head/chest mounts and a little tripod a while back and havnt got round to using it yet. I'm not much of a talker but im thinking id like to give youtube a crack.
Iv not rebuilt a gearbox before but Iv got no problem giving it a go. I dont yet know what gearbox it is and finding the torx settings could be a challenge.
full Monty overkill service has been ordered
(I have a... um... ritual when I get my hands on a new vehicle)
Gonna get it running right then take it for an mot
make sure there isnt a huge expense that iv missed.. and go from there

hey there, welcome! 2005, same as mine!
first things first, unplug that mass air flow sensor. that is usually the cause of intermittent turbo issues. if it runs better without it, replace it!
hope a timing belt kit plus water pump is included in the service. honestly its not that hard of a job to do. it should be on its 3rd belt by now but i bet its on its 2nd still. and ill be shocked if its still on its 1st! this thing uses OAT type coolant (though it does not really matter so long as you flush the system really well, you just cant mix different coolant types)
check the lower part of the radiator for "damp" patches.. it may just be a tiny pinhole in it not enough to drip, but only enough to force coolant through when its pressurised.
monitor the oil level.. it could be a sign the turbo seals are getting old. mine does use a little but its over a good 3k miles and just comes off the max line.
for the 4th gear, change into it realllly slowly. eventually you will get that good at it, you can actually change quite quick.. sounds strange but its true! (we have an iveco daily.. it may as well be a crash box)
£350 is good. paid £325 for mine with faults.
oh.. dont forget to adjust your throttle cable.. under the bonnet, under the wiper motor you will see the throttle position sensor.. the throttle cable on that has like a peg on it. make sure to pull the cable out just before the TPS starts to move and replace the peg. may aswell recover the 100% throttle movement!
glad to see the $4!t i post to youtube helps people out! pretty much why i do it.

yeah.. SEEM units are not a standardised measurement.. and to make it worse theres 2 types... with the same name!
they say that 1 seem is approximately 5.33 newtons.. from what i have found on the internet. i dont know if its true.
to be honest, i do not have the correct tool, i just use the quarter twist test..
in all my years of doing timing belts, i have never had one fail. some of the early belts i did for folk are getting in to 70k or more miles of use. like on a friends van i service.
about ready to be changed again i guess, but it looks like i fit it yesterday condition wise!

Its not looking good
Maf sensor looked just as bad.. didn't have any contact cleaner so I used isopropyl alcohol I recon thats what cantact cleaner is anyway?
1.35 litre came out of the gearbox.. wasn't able to find the level plug (unless this was it in the photo? There wasn't a bolt in there tho and I couldn't shove anything in very deep ) I put 1.8 back in... my box had a black breather cap on the top so it went in there.
Box plug didn't have much metal on it so I was hopeful that improvements could be had... until I went to put the plug back in and the magnet pulled this out the gearbox.
Put 450ml of stp engine flush in ran.. it for what ever it said on the bottle.. dropped it
changed oil filter put in comma x-flow flushing oil (I love this stuff) ran it for what ever it said on the bottle dropped it
changed oil filter a second time put in wyns supercharge oil additive and topped up to correct level.
I only do a double flush and add the additive when I first get a vehicle
Found a nackerd drive shaft
think this was the coolant the 6th time i flushed it
didnt take a photo every time but i recorded it
radiator needs replacing plus both pipes top and bottem
intercooler needs replacing (think you can see the bottem left corner in the photo with the blue tub
front pads need replacing
full exaust needs replacing
aux belts about to snap
think im good on rust tho... so theres that
this thing has a fule cooler? iv never seen one of those before? thats cool
im not going to do anymore work now im gonna put it back together and take it for an mot if they find anything im not willing to fix ill cut my losses
but if im happy ill be ripping the engine out and going full restoration mode

Filters and lubricants are always crap on a newly bought second hand van and not expensive to replace. I tend to flush engines with the cheapest oil I can find. I used some cheap 10w40 mineral that i picked up at Tesco for £2 / 5L a couple of years back, on this one. A new MAF sensor isn't the end of the world either.
Radiators and intercoolers on the other hand aren't cheap, nor drive shafts and belts. Brake pads aren't too much, I got a set of front pads for £22 from car parts for less the other week, discs can be had for not much more on ebay.
Hopefully the MOT doesn't show up anything more serious.
