Fuel issue

So, my van cut out this evening, AA eventually had to tow me home.

The van fired up with easy start spray, then cut out when not spraying into the inlet.

The man said the diaphragm is leaking on my primer bulb. But fuel is getting through as he saw it when spraying the easy start. So although that does need fixing, he says it isn't the (main cause) of the no fuel issue.

Fuel is getting to the pump, but not to the engine. Therefore he suggests it's either something clogging the fuel pipes, air getting into from somewhere else. Perhaps the stop solenoid. Or the fuel pump/injectors.

Does anyone have an idea? It's a 2005 mk 1 Peugeot expert 1.9D.

I have done the EGR valve pipes block. Could that cause this? It's been fine for weeks however.

The van was driving fine until I stalled (or thought I stalled - the engine could just have cut out on me due to lack of fuel...)

Any ideas folks? Fuel pumps are expensive please don't let it be that ?

Damn. For comparison when my (mine was Bosch, yours is likely Delphi/Lucas) pump died it was intermittent before it was permanent. But, you can test it by unbolting the metal pipes that run from the pump to the injectors.

Undo those bolts, and the metal pipe will pull off. Run the starter, see if fuel comes out. If it does, yay, if not, boo.

It could be that leak in the bulb has meant it's been dragging air in which could cause bad running, but also could have damaged the pump from lack of lubrication. Let's hope not.

But maybe try swapping/bypassing the priming bulb first before condemning the pump

Coincidence, unsure ... but whilst looking about the engine bay, there was a green wire that looks like it has snapped off from somewhere, but we couldn't quite see from where

On mine it's just a primer bulb inline with the fuel line, but from I remember with the DW8 it's a pumpy button thing on the filter housing isn't it, which makes it harder to bypass. I guess you'd have to replace the filter housing which is a minor arse

Maybe try the injector pipe thing first, see if it's delivering fuel and take it from there

Put a new fuel filter in lately? The seal on the filter lid/cover is a weak spot specially if you have an aftermarket one also is the little return pipe still attached? AA men are great for talking crap to just drag you home ASAP so they can get back to the layby and sleep.

Plan of action in the morning:

× check fuse(s). Injectors fuel pump & solenoid.

× check solenoid - can disconnect positive and reconnect to see if it clicks. Voltmeter will confirm whether there is a current.

× check pump - test whether there is a current.

× if all is good, check whether fuel is leaving the pump by undoing the bolts suggested by Ken.

× still no idea? Call the mobile mechanic and prepare for deep wallet surgery.

Notes:
Might be a goof idea to check the various wires with multimeter before checking fuses. If they all have currents, it saves me having to work out which fuse is what, because if there's currents to the various parts, then the fuses are obviously fine.

I know there's fuel coming from the fuel tank since the primer bulb spits out a little fuel once you've pressed it enough times (hence the AA man suggestion that the diaphragm is defective).

Ken, yes you're right it's not actually a bulb on my van, but a plastic pressy thing that forms part of the plastic fuel filter housing. Little harder to bypass ?.

When I got the van, the previous owner did tell me that a mechanic told him there is a split O ring "on the fuel pipe" (which one? Hence I've not fixed it yet) - this o ring causes the fuel to drain back down into the tank if the van is left sitting for any length of time, particularly on a hill - I usually end up having to prime every few days - sometimes even the very next day if its been sitting not turned over for 15+ hours. But then it starts straight away until the next time that it's left sitting for several hours.

I have a 2006 19D DW8B. Where about in the engine bay was the snapped off green wire? I can take a look and see if I can find where its meant to go to.

The green wire is an earth! Fir the relay on side of van (immobiliser?) Connect it and it starts first go. I have photi I can upload. I just attached it to on of the nuts on starter. That's shiny and new cos I fitted it. Dunno where it's actually snapped from, or how lol.

I found where it came off... there's a bracket just left of starter cables, with a bolt going thru it that has a ring connector attached that's not got a wire on it. That's its home.

Yes - very pleased! Thanks for all the quick responses, guys... im just slightly annoyed with myself that A) we didn't hear the relay click whilst still at the roadside when AA man noticed broken wire. Although it was pitch black and relatively noisy, and B) that I buried my head under the pillow, instead of getting up at 8am as I normally would for work, but knowing the van was off the road I cancelled the days jobs and had a lie in. Had I known it would be a 5 min diagnosis I could have got my jobs done instead of playing catch up the rest of the week lol
