I've been dying to do a long motorway run on diesel at 55mpg to see what I can max out at
From Duisburg, through Roermond, past Brussels, although about an hour of crappy driving trying to find a parkup near Calais, across to England, round the M25 (waiting for the traffic to clear), up the M40, M6 to the North

653 miles by the trip meter
64 litres of fuel
46.38 MPG

My idea of hell but a great result.

You're joking! I do love a drive through the countryside, but it's anything but relaxing like a slow cruise along never ending motorway
Glad to be back parked up though, it did constantly drain me being on the move

The entrance to the A73 was inexplicably closed so I ended up on a midnight tour of the town

I get about that at 60mph, but when the turbo was knackered and the power was less I seemed to get far more.
Did you enjoy your trip?

Quick Google says its still shut. I presume night time resurfacing. TBH your detour at what. 120KPH compared to the shorter route at 50/80 i cant see it costing you much more time TBH but what you missed was the road was full of whore houses and the last thing you would expect as take a side street almost all the way up its full of posh residential areas.

I was more focussed on "omg these traffic lights are reducing my mpg!" haha

Steve is telling me there is still a lot of flood damage in the area from a few month back. Must be all that global warning stuff

Kenbw2~~ Did you have any of that PCR Lateral Flow stuff to contend with on leaving or re-entering the country or did you show the NHS international travel thing.................
I ask as we are planning a trip down to see her Dad hopefully and we've been told we can get extra repeat prescription if our stay over there lasts or takes us over a month ...................
But the way things are going plus commitments and at this time of year it most likely will be Jan or Feb before we get to make a move and I dear say things could easily change by then ...................
Only hope prices stabilize a bit..........
I dout it ... Travel cost and fuel are rising high everything is and I also dout they will return either close to pre-covid levels as they never do...............
BTW I usually with my DW8 get 38-39 mpg and just shy of 41-42 mpg on a decent run at about 60mph.............
I'd say your doing ok there ..................

To right he is doing OK. I took my Convoy down south in the summer. 500 mile round trip and averaged 22MPG
Gutted as the last bus was 35MPH but 700kg lighter. Cant see that making such a difference.
Few weekends i took it up Applecross and the likes and still averaged 22. Im thinking the air/egr are all coked up and i good scrub out is on order. At £1.51 lt i want more miles for my bucks.

Oh man I was so on edge about all this.
I ordered the paid Lateral Flow Test, you can order that in advance to be delivered to you. I went with Boots, they ask for a scan of your passport photo page (not very comafortable with private companies asking for this =/ ). You then need the order number for that for the Passenger Locator Form, which P&O did scrutinise in detail.
I didn't put an address on anything (since I don't have one). No problem there. And the Passenger Locator Form does ask for proof of vaccination but it's optional, you can just skip it.
I didn't do anything with the NHS Covid Pass, and I was okay because the French border going out (the only place that checked it) accepted my purple stamp card thing. I don't think they were supposed to though.
And the thing that surprised me but makes sense I guess, we get passport stamps from the French border now

Thaks for that.....As I said things will probably change by the time we decide or have ability to go down to Spain.............
It gives us a little insight if nothing else as what to expect and as we have done next to Bug*** all for the last 2 years almost I thought to make a meal of it and really take our time and social distance fairly easily in van.........................
But that lateral flow test did both ways ? or did you need 2 ? ..................................

Those figures of yours reminds me of why I bought my van amoung other reasons and it also brings things into perspective .............
Obviously to buy it's cheaper than a VW and as we had the DW8 in the 306 I figured reasonable MPG............
I must admit to being a little disapointed at the MPG results [I put that down to in the end the gearing, over all weight and it being brick shaped ] as the 306 has never given me less than 43 MPG and normally higher than that.............
On a run at roughly 60 to 70MPH it's around 49-50 MPG the best I ever got with it was 57 MPG and I wasn't even trying at the time and shocked me .................
But as I said to my Partner it's all relative at the time of searching out a van as we both fancied although a good bit older for roughly the same money as van [Our budget roughly] a converted coach .........................
As I then said to her apart from needing an hgv to drive it [and well in my 60's now, Medicals coming round are getting dubious] at 15 to 18 MPG and usage every 6 weeks or so, At the very least we'll have no money left to go any where at holiday time................
I based my figures on things like [Very scientific method] I at one time had a 16 ton gross Ford Cargo with the Perkins V8 in it and fully freighted it did about 15-17 MPG and averaged over all about 20 MPG in the time we had it....................
My first lorry an 1988 earlyish EPS Mercedes 1635 artic 350hp non intercooled twin turbo with a converted ZF to become the 16 speed EPS box which made life in usage a little easier I guess but over all a real PITA, Hense why I said it was built on friday 13th at 5 to 5pm, I did manage about 500,000kms in 4 years with it [And costly to repair, But every thing on a Merc is expensive] ... When empty it did about 7-8 MPG and fully freighted was 6.5MPG in those days I could burn close to £4000 in diesel on a good month and I spent £1705 for 6 months road tax [The dearest then available later I was able to restrict a couple of units to weight spread over 6 axles and keep road tax to under £700 a year], Changed days now but I'm still fuel cost conscious though, Later on the very best I got was from my and back to a 4x2 at this point,A Scania 164 530hp single turbo intercooled V8 with 10 speed box[All the Scania's I drove had ten speed boxes, In the mid to late 80's I had a 92 then a 93 wendy house Scania they were split 6 range change 4 to get the 10] and it [164 =16ltr & 4 series] was up to 11MPG at 38 tons gross it was usually about 9MPG for it normally.....................
Now a days I'm told Artics are mostly Automatics and return as good if not better MPG than a Manual equivalent.................
Although I've used a couple Automatics, Back in the day they were not efficient and quite fragile ................

Vaccinated (or recovered) means you don't need one for Germany, and UK needs the one for 2 days after you get back.
Both countries need quarantine, tests etc if not vaccinated.
I hear France needs you to print out a self certification that you haven't been near anyone with covid, don't have symptoms etc but I don't have a printer so I chanced that.

Talk of the devil ... Things have already started to change....................
I hear France, Russia, Germany, Austria and czech republic after doing fairly well have all of a sudden got high case numbers and are staerting to struggle .............
So much so that Austria has gone into full lockdown again and the Cech republic are putting restrictions in place andcocidering following suit............
Apparently Germany and Austria have had a low uptake in having jabs done and this is what's getting the blame of the surge of infection rates. ...............
I also saw on euro news channel that they have been having festival parades in Spain without restriction this claimed a bit like the UK that things are more stable and number are controled better because of jsbs and the booster up take numbers ........................
[Herd immunity ... where it doesn't stop you catching it but thing are more controled ... Safety in numbers]
Sods law I don't think Ive heard two lots of procedue the same

Me to. Last time was 1987 heading to Turkey. Disappointed when i started to travel Europe even though the border points were still up and manned we never got stopped. I also miss the different currency's, well apart from going to cash machines and trying to work out how much you are taking out.
