Hi Guys Thanks for the adding me.

Thought I would say hello!
Im the proud new owner of an Expert.
I got the van as my works vehicle I fancied a bit of comfort after driving around in my Landrover 90 for years but I also wanted so old school engineering being a narrow boat Mechanic.

Just got it through though the MOT swinging arm bushes and front brake rear brake pipes and it drives like a dream.

Its first job was Bolton to loughborough and back. Its not got the grunt of my 90s 2.5 litre intercooled turbo but its alot more relaxaed at 70 mph.

Ive got the problem of brake fade at low speed so Im going to bung up the egr pipe from the vacume pump and see if that helps.

A couple of iminent jobs to do like some new tyres, on the front oil and filter change and posibly timing belt.

What is the recomendations on the timing belt milage and age wise its done 108,000 miles.

Re: New Member

I am sure its every 5 years or 70k but not knowing the van i think i would just be changing it regardless. Not long had one go in my Maxus what was an expensive job to sort.

Re: New Member

I looked it up a while back and its about 70k if you are a courier and drive it hard and 86k if you don't.  Either way i would get it changed, so you at least are setting a point from which to calculate the next change.  I have to get mine done in the next couple of weeks.

Oil, air and fuel filters are easy on the MK1's, although the fuel filter has two types, so have a look at the old one before you order a new one.  Oil wise its 10w40, 5w30 or 5w40.  There is a sticker under the bonnet telling you what you can put in it.  I used 5w30 A5 Fully Synthetic.

Gearbox oil is an easy one as well, it takes a square socket (you can get one from halfords for a fiver, if you don't have one) and uses 2L of 75w80 oil.  Fill it from the breather hole (below the air filter) as the filler hole is on the side in an awkward place.

My belt change was on the cards as it also had no history. Was looking to buy a kit just the night before it went. I was kind of expecting it to last more than three bloody day though  big_smile

Luck of the draw with older motors though

Re: New Member

I did the oil and filter last night. Ran it with engine flush in.

After a short trip the new oil looks as bad as the old oil cry So I think Ill run it for a couple of weeks and change the oil again this time running flushing oil through. Clearly it hasnt had an oil change in a while as the bottom of the filter was rusty  yikes.

Timimg kit is ordered and ill do the fuel filter at the week end, mine is in a plastic box on the front right of the engine next to the battery so I asume its the paper type?

Aye its an oval black box with paper filter try and take care taking the retaining wrap around clip off as some you get with filters are just crap. Also try not to break the fuel return nipple on the lid as air gets in and you conk out till sorted.

Re: New Member

hail and welcome!

honesty the actual official Citroen maintenance book says a cam belt needs changing every 8 years (or 80k) if you use it with heavy foot or every 10 years (or 100K) if only used for light work.
(i know right, lmao)

great vans, best thing i ever bough and wished i got one sooner. dont think ill ever go back to a car again!

ive pretty much stripped mine down to the shell and rebuilt it (over the first corona virus lockdown) while i was at it i retrofitted air conditioning and did a few other things to make it better.

some advise, if you like yours and want to keep it for a long time, rust proof the sills and sub frame  wink  they will never rot out then.

Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".
