As I've been having some Speedo issues [Working when it feels like it] ........................
I thought that an hourmeter might be a suitable backup ......................................
I found on eB** that there is a combined Hourmeter read out and rev counter ..............
These are in 52mm or 85 mm size for diesel or petrol engined vehicles, boats and generators etc ...Avaiable with various rev ranges ................
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293790197879 … SwaShf-VAT ....................................
Any thoughts or has anybody used this .......................
Mabye I should just look at plan A and have just a working hourmeter for when engine is running .............
Allegedly It comes with multi plug and wiring for set up/ pick up signal and instrutions with the ubiquitous Chingish [No dout] ........................
I also with Kenbw2 fancy a reccounter ....................
Just a working tachometer ... It negates any fafing about with phone, torque which becomes a PITA fairly quickly ..............................

I know I tried swapping out a Synergie dashboard to see if its rev meter would work, but unfortunately not. Where would you get the signal from?

Some alternators have an output signal.

I was dicking about with one on my convoy to see if you could retro fit one what you can but luckily they all come with the signal wire in the loom.

Just found this while sorting some boxes:-

It has 4 wires - Red, Black, Blue, Yellow.
Black and red will be 12v, The red doesn't enter the casing but attaches direct to the 2 night light bulb holders externally.
The yellow is very long and looks like signal.
Any ideas on the blue? Would it be another 12v live to the internals?

If this post is anything to go by you have a green earth missing. Scroll down to where the OP puts up three pictures. It will probably be an earth you dont need if putting in and old classic with steel dash. Bit like some radios would not work till you installed the aerial or put in cradle.

Another thought. I use FORscan so read my convoy and a cheap Chinese reader for my Maxus. Both tell me the revs, temperature or coolant and engine obviously through the OBD port. There is a company out there that do a dash display of what is going on with your engine while driving. If this displays Revs as well as a few other things then it may be the easiest solution , Think they are American but try Ultrascan in ebay or amazon

Interesting. Same manufacturer, different model. As you suggest, wiring is virtually the same apart from mine being missing a green.

The missing green on mine could be due to it having the long threaded studs for the mounting bracket and the green originally being a simple ring connector to one of the studs. Likely to be left behind on removal.
If so I can see no need for a second earth going inside the case. Which means I don't even know where the black goes either.
Also note the jumpers for 2, 4 or 6 cylinders.
This thread suggests that it doesn't even need the blue connected:-
https://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/t … v-counter/
And this video suggests that the black is the signal feed and that there may be two separate circuits which would require a live feed (my blue?) to the internals.
Only way to confirm would be to look inside. But as its a sealed unit and as I don't think I will be using it so I won't bother.

Funny thing My early 1996 "N" Reg mk 3 golf diesel has an obd port fitted ......................
I must admit using the VW Scanner it appears the only thing that's readable is the air bag .........................
When asked "Does it have any electronics in it" ? ...........................
My answer is "Of course ... A Wireless !" ................................

Funny you should say that... I am just rediscovering Land of the Giants.

i use a posh OBD one.. does speed, revs coolant temp, voltage, even turbo pressure.
can pretty much get it to display anything the OBD can give via diagnostic software.
it was only like £20 from aliexpress. but does sometimes stop the coolant temp on the
dash from reading.. just have to unplug it and plug it back in.

I've discovered this but unsure where it would be needed looks like flywheel pickup and probably wants a thread drilled and tapping

More likely to fit a onboard water level guage and although China products ... Required things start to mount up
Might it be easier to find and splice a RPM signal off of the diagnostic feed

Is that even possible though, the diagnostic system doesn't have a dedicated line for a particular function, it just uses data that a computer/scanner commands it to retrieve. I could be wrong though, if I am, a good way to get a smart install going with a 806 dash and some trickery.
I have a scangauge 2 that I used to use in my ZR/RX8, get quite a gauges to read off it including RPM.

Oooh tell me the trickery plans! I have an 806 dash that didn't end up getting an RPM reading, would be happy to get it working
