She's getting a bit sluggish to start, and I'm fairly sure that the last time I plugged her in it gave a glow plug code.
How easy is it to replace the glow plugs on this engine?
I've had a look and the access isnt great it seems.
I'm worried about anything going wrong.
Any thoughts??

I don't know about that engine in particular but I think the access problem is common to them all.
When I wanted mine replacing the biggest problem seemed to be concerns about seized plugs leading to stripped threads and knackered head.
Three garages made half-hearted attempts or declining the job altogether. One garage replaced the 2 easily reached ones, said one was seized, and the last one inaccessible.
I eventually found a garage (a diesel specialist) that replaced all four in a couple of hours and had no problems.

When i changed mine on the 1.9 due to crap cold starts it made no difference. I ended up just waiting for the relay to click off rather than the light. Think 27 seconds but would go for a 2nd cycle if really cold. I have a Maxus as a work van as well as my Convoy camper. The Maxus hates cold and its always a double cycle but also they say dont use throttle. I can drain the battery if i dont use throttle

I chaged my glow plugs last year and year before IIRC both OAT and Casper are both correct .................
OAT is right that on my DW8 access is not clever and when I did the plugs change myself it created lots of swear words and blood and like Casper it didn't seem to do a lot ................
I put it down to cheapo glow plugs used and them being crap ................
I then just coinky dinky changed battery ... Unless you used Van every day or just about every other day it seamed to loose puff quickley............
As battery was ultimately dying it was changed and cold starts were all but instant again on a single heat on plug light going out.............
It's back to being sluggish to start again in the realy cold snaps we've had ... So I'm thinking down a plug and I'm reluctant to be back at it again ... Maybe battery's lowish again or better still check battery maintainer thing I got for battery when I remember to use it ..........................
Van will have done a moon like mileage if lucky of about 1,000mls in last year.........................
Or I'm talking through my ar** again.................

When it gets cold I tend to help the engine by chucking a bit of that high octane diesel in, eg, VPower or BP Ultimate. Not a full tank of it, but maybe 4-5 litres for every 20 or so. It starts a little bit easier. But as ever, YMMV. Down side is it burns hot, so expect the engine to run a little hotter.
Aside from that, my battery is also not so good, even when used daily. I'm thinking a new one, in the new year, will be required.

Oddly enough, the problem with mine when down 2 then later even only one dead glow plug, wasn't starting but extreme grey smoke till warmed up. It still started surprisingly well.

Ended up getting them replaced at a local diesel specialist, all 4 were dead!
£160 didn't think that was a bad price.

Did well to start at all with none working!
Sounds a good price to me.
I was getting quotes of 200+ inc parts 5 years ago.

I am lucky with my van, it usually starts pretty well even on the coldest days. However I have noticed that modern day diesels like our two 6 cyl BMW 330d's put the glow plugs on as soon as you press the unlock button on the key fob but only when the engine is below 30.c.
Pretty clever.. and not hard to wire in on a timer and relay.

Notice: I have the tendency to void warranties, blow fuses, cause fires, and other fun stuff.
Words of wisdom: Internally rust proof the sills and subframe! both skins!!. There's always user serviceable parts inside. "Oh that shouldn't have happened".

I think my brother's mk1 Ford Galaxy had the glow plugs triggered by opening the door which is cool
