Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

Wholly unprepared, but winging it as I go!

I've always wanted to bring this van to Germany - it's never been abroad (as far as I'm aware) and I need to see what it can do on the Autobahn...

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

That's for tomorrow, spent pretty much all of today getting here

400 miles, 44.75 litres = 40MPG. Not the best I've had, but that's on 80% veg oil and a couple of... unplanned diversions through Antwerpen

I like Germany. This was mine heading to Todtnau for i think Europe's largest Bobsleigh

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

The results are in - I strapped the phone in place to record when I got to the top speed

Screenshot-from-2021-11-04-22-47-56.png

This is on 50:50 veg oil:diesel, I want to try again when I have more diesel in the tank, I feel like it would tip it over to 100mph

It was definitely not happy though, first time I tried sparks started coming out of the exhaust! It hasn't done it since, so I think it was just carbon deposits in the exhaust pipe

Then when I was trying again I heard a pop  yikes I pulled over and it sounded very strange. I could hear the turbo running thank god, although I heard it a lot

Turns out the intercooler pipe had popped off. I put it back on and it's back to normal. But it's definitely trying to tell me to calm it!  devil

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

Probably closer to 90 than 95. This was my 1.9D DW8B on the flat doing 86mph

90.jpg

Sat nav should give you a closer reading and if you dont have one this app makes a good speedo.

Yea I'm gonna have another go I think, I'll get GPS going

I only got my DW8 to 80mph. Maybe the computer jiggery pokery adds a bit more oomph  tongue

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

In my old van the speedo was realiable up to 70mph and afterwards became a mere suggestion tongue

Sat nav helped. Got the 1.9D up to 86mph and it was sodding terrifying! Would've gone faster if it wasn't for the airbrakes...

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

Well I've completed my speed runs as my trip to Germany is coming to a close. I even treated it to some vpower diesel

It's official, I got it up to 100mph!

signal-2021-11-07-223728_001.jpeg

There was a very slight downhill so it's not quite its performance.

Here's the van doing 96mph without cheating smile

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

I managed 90 the other day over here for about 5 secs due to some tit that did the speed up, slow down move when I overtook him on the motorway and wouldn't let me back in, so I floored it and the speedo rapidly hit 90, which probably wasn't that much, at least it didn't feel like 90.  I wonder if mine will do 100?  Not sure I would want to chance it for now, with the van as it is, but maybe next year i will hop across the channel and try out.  That bobsleigh run that Casper linked looks really sweet.

If not I will do it in a couple of years when I attempt to reach Nordkapp.

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

Your 2.0 will absolutely do 100, isn't it like 110 horsepower?

Edit: I just looked it up, there are some 94 horsepower versions of the 2.0 HDi  yikes

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

Sounds like great fun Ken but I keep my Dispatch at 70 or less now, after my Scudo engine put the crank through the sump last year, even though I was only doing around 65 at the time. Although I had done 90 in it a long time previously and mine did the sparks and flaming soot balls out of the exhaust too. Which I would say was probably just the build up in the cat from tootling round the doors as well as the fact that the dodgy EGR choke valve had made it run rich for quite a while.

Cheers and all the best, Griff.

Wow 100 isn’t bad! I’ve managed 90 in my 1.9d but that’s downhill on the A30. On that road you need to be going fast just to get up the other side!

Been on a few in Belgium like that. Long down hill where you see an even longer uphill in the distance so you floor it to get any chance of speed on the upside. The 1.9D does have charm at times big_smile

BTW this was the A1 on the flat with no wind

I do enjoy pushing a car round the country roads however today i was good. Had to go into Edinburgh for the two yearly eye test and never went over 75 once. Had the wife in the car and she would just nag me to hell as its her car and fuel big_smile

KenBW that is a cool front end on your mk1.
I have seen 115mph out of Brenda but that was many years ago.  It always impresses me how stable the mk1s are at high speed.

Re: Had a few days free, nipped over to to Germany

Hi, sorry for digging old threads, but I have a somewhat related question: I bought a 1996 Scudo 1.9 TD in mint condition. It runs perfectly, but the speedo is WAY off, 100 kph on gps equals 125 kph on the speedo. It is running a bit too small tires, 195/65r14, but that accounts for only 5% difference in travelled distance — where is the remaining 20%? Is it possible that I have a wrong gearbox from 1.9 naturally aspirated?
