Engine temperature

Hi all

So since being back on the road engines had a weird stutter, put your foot down big puff of blue smoke

Then fine again,

Turns out I'd forgotten one of the vacuum hoses in the egr value doh.

But since reconnecting the engine temp has gone from 70degree to 90 degree ?

Would having the egr value now working increase the engine temp.

Was curious what is the normal operating temp? And is the temp sender above The oil filter ? As also believe it's faulty some times drips to zero and the engine noise changes, guessing it goes into cold running

Any input on the temp would be great

My understanding is that a functioning EGR reduces the combustion temperature. Unless it was fully open all the time without the hose attached and 90 is the normal?

So further digging. The temp gauge has Decided to become faulty do just a coincidence lol

I've replaced the temp sender still the same the gauge sits at 80 degrees. Then slowly creeps upto 95 ish. Then goes back down to 80.

The fans not kicking in and I've popped the bonnet s few times to check and he's not overheating so much be the gauge

Gonna fit an aftermarket one at some point

As hard to find a set of clocks that's not £70 ?

Might do a post in fitting an aftermarket one.

Can buy these blocks to tee into a coolant pipe ?

My dispatch was 75 no matter what the speed or weather. Previous van (Expert) was around 80. Both had perfect cab heaters also so i seen no issue so never gave it a 2nd thought.

Oh. Both were 1.9D

My 1.9D would sit at 80, my 1.9TD sits at 85 unless I gun it in which case it goes to 90/95

Years ago I had A Renault truck which did much the same .......
Come to even the smallest not even noticable hill temp would rise then fall after weeks of head scratching I was told by an older guy who was younger than me now probably ..............
To check the stat. ..................................
It turned out to be sticky and late on opening ...........................

Was probably slowly failing ...................

Yeah it's definitely the gauge sometimes now goes to max back down to zero, back to max a few times then stops working ?

Next trip back to the above lol ?

Speedo occasionally stops working too ?

Oh yea both my vans have had this - all the clocks go to zero

Speedo I was like "meh, I can use GPS"
Fuel is like, fingers crossed I guess it right
Engine temp, I guess I never need to know it (except for that one time it overheats and I don't know yikes )

My speedo started to do the same and stops and starts working when it feels like it ..................
But not until after giving away a perfectly good set of clocks ...............
which I thought at time were faulty................
This 3rd set I fitted started to do the same shortly after fitting and giving the other set away..........................

I've since been told there is a small plastic gog for the speedo dfive in gear box thats most probably at fault ...................
The clocks I parted with woked pefectly the whole time until he sold the van for a berlingo thingy ...................................
