My 2005 expert 1.9D engine got very hot (enough to cause the oil on the exterior to smoke) and cut out on me a mile from home.
Tried to turn it over and it wouldn't crank at all, just one limp "uggh" and then nothing. Tried again, same thing.
I waited a half hour or so for it to cool, and the starter motor is turning fine again. But not starting. I'm not totally sure its the same sound as usual when trying to start it. But putting it in gear and turning the key did move it forwards.
I decided to walk home and let it cool down over night. But I'm really worried that it's terminal and that I've killed the engine.
Thoughts?

FYI just before the cut out, the temp gauge which usually sits around 70ish had crept over 90, but went back down on a clear stretch of road so I didn't give a 2nd thought until I suddenly heard the engine give a weird rattle going around a roundabout - 1 min later, the above issue arose

Doesn't sound good.
Have you checked your hoses? I would suspect at the bottom or at least low down.
It could be that a hose connection cane loose or sprung a sizable leak and it heated up as the water got lower. As the rad approached empty it cooled and the gauge dropped although the engine was still getting hotter.

For what it's worth my 1.9TD sits just below 90C all the time, and my old 1.9D would go over that if I sat idling for a long time. So I wouldn't worry about that on its own
Like OAT says, check coolant. How much coolant is in the header tank, if any?
