Could be EGR

but by no means I'm NOT an expert, have a read there isolate (both with locking pliers) and if no joy, someone might come up with better suggestions in the meantime

hmm the DW8 should stay running all be it rough with no ECU connected whatsoever so its safe to rule out it being electrical...  given its not the stop solenoid or factory anti theft immobiliser..
do you have more than one key to get in and start the van? if so, hold up all keys to the ignition barrel.. or as close as you can. this can also backfire though and the little transponder RFID reader will try to read all the keys at once and cause a failed read

yes it does sound like it could be air or fuel delivery also.

when was the fuel filter last changed? it really sounds like a blocked fuel filter that cant deliver enough fuel to sustain a run.

when was the air filter last changed? it could be something along those lines.

i have heard of a "blocked" exhaust also causing the same issues..  the pressure builds up cuts the engine out then weeps out and can be restarted.

It's got a new filter in that was the first thing that got done when I got the injectors and pump back even had a direct feed from a separate electronic pump to bypass the filter and that and still does the same will try the other suggestions and will let you no how I get on thanks

Dodgy ignition may be a possibility. Loose wire, worn when in the drive position. My Maxus had something simmilar where the heater fan would not work but started on the odd occasion after hitting a pot hole. When running if i turn the key to start the starter motor but not quite then the fan would run. Swapped over ignition and all was good again.

Just another thought...

Could it be a weak lift pump in the fuel tank? (Assuming these vehicles have one)

Please let us know if you resolve

The 1.9s don't have one. The 2.0 does
