I would like to pay for some training :)

Hello there guys, basically I want to change the timing belt on my Citroen Dispatch as well as the water pump.

Its got a leak of coolant at the moment and it seems to be coming from the area where you might expect the water pump to be, and as I want to replace the timing belt anyway to be safe (as I've no knowledge of when and if it was last done), it's good practice to have the water pump changed at the same time.

I would feel much better if someone could train me/teach me/talk me through the process of these repairs/maintenance jobs and I'd be willing to pay.

Let me know if you're interested.  I don't often get alerts when I'm messaged back on this forum so you can contact me on 07917758513 or peterlatham@live.co.uk

By the way, I live in the Todmorden, West Yorkshire area.  Thank you.  smile

I don't really know of anyone on here that might offer training, but you might try JohnDragonMan.  Off the top of my head, he's the only one I know of (currently) that did his own timing belt / water pump change.  He also did a bunch of youtube videos on his van conversion, from almost a complete strip down to completion.  At the very least you should watch the video about the timing belt change.  Also on a thread fairly recently, I posted a bunch of YT vids that give the basics of doing it.

I paid someone to do mine.  As far as jobs go that I am happy to do, it isn't one of them.  If it goes wrong, it is very bad.

I'm inclined to argree with pathfinder 100 these days............
Although it's a relatively easy job on these engines ................
Bad things do happen when things go wrong here and we are all human ...........
I started to take this view after my divorce and she paid elswhere for the work I farmed out as my ex still wanted stuff attended to on the car I supplied as part of settlement [and I have back again via my daughter ... It's a long story]..................
At least someone else now carries the confidence in their work and the can when the Sh** hits the fan...............
As I've got older and less flexable I've More and more farmed this type of work out ...............
The trick is in finding someone you entrust to delegate the work too ......................

Re: I would like to pay for some training :)

It's a very in-depth and annoying job.  Some who I have seen do it have taken the entire engine out to do it because the clearance between body and engine is pretty slim.

For me, I decided to use a garage that specialised in Peugeot vans and cars.  For them to do it cost me just shy of £400, but it was done in about 3 hours, by people who regularly serviced the Peugeot taxis, so I know it was done properly.  If you get the parts yourself it can be a bit cheaper, but on this occasion I let them get the belt and pump for me.  After it was done, my coolant light issue went away (the light came on, on hills and anytime the van was on an angle in any direction) and so far it has not been an issue since.  I don't regret spending the money.

The only time that I might consider doing it myself is if I literally couldn't afford to get it done and it needed doing urgently.  if that occurred i would budget 2-3 days for the vehicle to be offline while I did it and i would watch any youtube videos on the subject and ask as many questions as possible.  Although it isn't massively hard, its just fiddly and and you better be damned sure you did it correctly first time or you will need a new engine.

Re: I would like to pay for some training :)

its got to be one of the more easy diesel engines to do a timing belt change on. both the DW8 and HDI (DW10).

belt tension is the only hard part to guess.. however if you cut half the belt away then slide the new belt over where the half belt went then fully cut the old belt off and just slide the new belt all the way into the original position it makes it a very easy process to do.  i would recommend before that changing the water pump first.. just clamp the old belt to the crank and cam (and injection pump if DW8) pullies then unbolt the water pump and replace keeping the original tension and timing of the belt.

you do have to remove the engine mount, so just support the engine on a trolley jack with a bit of wood or rubber bit to sit on. dont forget to first jack up the drivers side front and take the wheel off first.  you can just undo the bottom pulley for the aux belt and stretch the tensioner back in place when you refit without undoing it. well you can on the ones with aircon.

hope this helps..
