Veg oil prices

Since it looks like we've got a few of us running on veg oil, and prices being high I thought I'd start a thread on where to find cheap oil

Best I've got at the moment is Farmfoods at £1.08/litre
Needs a bit of jiggery pokery with £5 off £50 spend vouchers that you get on their website

The big 10 litre bottles are 2 for £24
The small 3 litre ones are £3.29

So 8x 10 litres = £24 x 4 = £96
+ 2x 3 litre bottles gets you to £102.58
Minus £10 in vouchers = £92.58

£92.58 for 86 litres (nigh on a tank full) = £1.08 a litre

What do you have to do to get it running on this? Or just straight in mate?

Re: Veg oil prices

Depends on your engine/fuel pump combination

Both the 1905cc XUD9 and 1868cc DW8 engines will run on it happily even up to 100% veg oil. But you *have* to check that you have the Bosch fuel pump. If you have the Lucas I think you can get away with 50:50

The 2.0 HDi will run on it but I'm not sure how much of a veg:diesel ratio is safe

None are near me....'ish, as one in Basingstoke is almost 20 miles and Landan- I wouldn't just not go to (I live Guildford-Farnham, Surrey way)
Can't be that much of a difference I thought and remembering not being able to get to work, due to shortage of diesel I thought...

I think Sainsburys (at least) is on to you (and me) making it not wort it, perhaps as an emergency only.

BTW, wanted to find what pump is on my van (if it's Bosch or not)- couldn't see what make is it, is there a way to establish what one I got, so I'd know how much as a max I can mix veg oil to the parts of diesel?

Re: Veg oil prices

A Bosch pump should look a bit like

Bosch-pump.jpeg

A lucas/Delphi type pump like
Lucas-Dephi-Pump.jpg

Both are rotery pumps but the lucas version uses  a diaphragm in it and is overal a weaker pump, Bosch is best option here for veg oil, An even better pump option for veg oil is an in line pump as used in old mercedes but we have to *iss with the *oc* we've got

Although I have a 306 Peogoet with a DW8 and a Bosch pump Im sure all DW8B engines have a lucas/Delphi pump my 2005 Van has basicly same engine as 306 but  has a lucas/delphi pump fitted to the updated DW8B.............................. I am willing to be told otherwise about DW8B's and Bosch pumps from factory..................
A bosch pump should fit once clocked in bracket..................

Re: Veg oil prices

i had a lucas on my old 306.. in 2 years it never saw a petrol station yet somehow managed to clock up 27k miles.. i still managed to sell it on for more than i paid for it.
must admit, i wish i had an XUD in my van..  the HDi is nice but the XUD sounded better and well the ability to run it on different fuels was oh so nice.

I have a 2003 1.9D , my wife runs a kitchen and I can get a tank full of used oil a week easily. I’ve filtered veg oil before and cleaned using methanol, I’m wondering whether  the issue with the Lucas pump has to do with viscosity? Would the Lucas pump be ok with filtered and cleaned oil, or should I just mix 50:50 to be safe?

Re: Veg oil prices

It's to do with viscosity yea, they tend to leak and/or the shaft in the middle breaks

Re: Veg oil prices

Guy on our Convoy page running an older LDV 400. He was sticking over the counter veg oil and now looking for a new pump as the seals are all shot. Having said this a percentage if the issue must have something to do with age.

I have just put a recon VP30 Bosch pump in my convoy only to learn i could have got a mechanical one out a landrover. Why TF do you get this info after you have done the job  big_smile

Sucks. Which pump was it? I think you can actually replace the seals in them, assuming it's similar to ours

Had to go hunting for his post again big_smile Its the old 400 before it was reshaped and called the Convoy. They got the Peugeot 2.5 turbo and non turbos. Think it was like the Transit Di engines, Turbo go Lucas and Non got Bosch. He had Lucas and i was wrong on the fuel. 70% strained cooking oil and 30% paraffin. Probably someone down the pub said it was OK to do that on an almost 30 year old pump. Anyway he is looking for the Bosch now
